Chapter 393: Enchanted

Chapter 393: Enchanted

In the middle of their conversation, a swirling of emotions bubbled up to the surface. Bai Mo found himself momentarily entranced by the sight of Xu Zeng’s radiant smile.

The ger’s features were strikingly handsome, with an aura of androgynous charm that was difficult to ignore. But it was his smile that truly captivated Bai Mo, drawing him in with its delicate balance of beauty and adorableness.

With the simple curve of his lips, Xu Zeng seemed to cast a spell over those around him, his smile bewitching in its allure. Whether one preferred a traditionally cute or more classically beautiful ger, there was no denying the enchanting quality of Xu Zeng’s smile.

It was the icing on the cake for those weirdos who found a handsome ger attractive, a dash of charm that illuminated the space around him.

As Bai Mo’s gaze lingered on Xu Zeng’s smile, he felt a rush of warmth suffuse his cheeks before shooting up to his ears, his heart skipping several beats in rapid succession.

For a moment, he was lost in the spellbinding beauty before him, his breath catching in his throat as his body responded to the sight.

But just as quickly as it had come, the enchantment was cracked, as Bai Mo forcefully tore his eyes away, forcing himself to focus on the conversation.

With a determined effort, he shifted his gaze downward, fixing his attention on the golden bells he had brought as gifts for Da Long and Xiao Long.

The bells were the perfect size for the two babies to play with once they broke their shells. Not even half an adult’s palm width with a jewel encrusted center. It met the three checkpoints of shiny, expensive, and noise making.

Perfect to keep a baby entertained and keep a noble—the parent—happy, and was a common gift between nobility and merchant families for a first born child or cherished children.

Yet even as he tried to distract himself, another dangerous thought crept into Bai Mo’s mind, unbidden and unwelcome.

He couldn’t help but notice the hands that should have hung at Xu Zeng’s sides but were now fiddling with the two ornate bells. They were strong and capable, with lines that spoke of a life lived with purpose.

They were a stark contrast to Bai Mo’s own delicate hands, pale and unblemished, and yet there was a beauty in their imperfection that drew him in.

For a moment, Bai Mo allowed himself to indulge in the fantasy of pampering those hands, of tracing each line with his fingertips and marveling at the strength they held.

But with a shake of his head and a twitch of his ears, he banished the thought from his mind, steeling himself against the allure of Xu Zeng’s presence.

Finally, he found his voice, the words emerging slowly as he spoke of Xu Feng’s assessment of the ger before him.

"He said you were a simple and hardworking ger," Bai Mo began, his tone measured as he relayed Xu Feng’s words. "A good boy who deserved a good loving partner."

With each word, Bai Mo couldn’t help but feel a pang of longing, a desire to uncover the truth behind Xu Feng’s assessment and to understand the complexities of Xu Zeng’s character.

But as he spoke, he couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to Xu Zeng than met the eye, a depth of experience hidden beneath the surface that begged to be explored.

With just a single sentence from Bai Mo, Xu Zeng’s demeanor shifted, his posture straightening as if he were an overgrown puppy eagerly awaiting more information about his brother.

Bai Mo had managed to find the switch that transformed Xu Zeng into what could only be described as a "good boy."

"He wanted to marry you to a good family. Not one where you’ll be one of many concubines," Bai Mo revealed, his words carrying the weight of truth gleaned from conversations with Xu Feng and from the last letter he had received from his closest friend.

Xu Zeng listened intently, his gaze fixed on Bai Mo as if hanging on every word, his expression a mix of curiosity and anticipation. He seemed to tacitly agree to give this budding connection between them a chance. They were now united in their shared longing for Xu Feng.

As Bai Mo continued, sharing more intimate details about his own family and his hopes for the future, Xu Zeng’s smile only seemed to grow wider, his eyes alight with a warm glow.

"We also talked about my father and my dad." Bai Mo couldn’t help but heat up as he thought of his parents and he and Xu Zeng. Could there really be a comparison? Could there be a love story between them?

"I told Feng Feng that I wanted a single partner to depend on." Bai Mo laughed wistfully. "I even promised him that if we got along well and we had children, one would be surnamed Bai, and the next Xu..."

This was all hypothetical. Bai Mo hadn’t realized there really was a brother that Xu Feng was hiding somewhere or that this brother would be a handsome and unmarried ger...well a ger sometimes, and a man other times...

"My brother thought we would be a good match," Xu Zeng remarked, his tone a blend of an inquiry and a declaration, his smile still bright.

Bai Mo couldn’t help but feel a rush of warmth flood his cheeks, his heart pounding in his chest as he struggled to maintain his composure.

Normally, he prided himself on his eloquence and poise, but in the presence of Xu Zeng, he found himself stumbling over his words and using filler phrases like "er" and "uhm." This wasn’t like him at all, nor was it proper.

It was unnerving, to say the least, to be so easily thrown off balance by another person. But as he met Xu Zeng’s gaze, Bai Mo couldn’t deny the fluttering sensation in his chest, the undeniable pull drawing him closer to the ger before him.

Yes, he was flustered, but what about Xu Zeng? Even in this unexpected moment, the ger’s smile remained steady, his demeanor calm and composed.
