The two awkward boys sat in silence, their faces both red and flushed. All that humping and it was a simple sentence that was truly both of their undoing. A short and simple compliment was all it took.

"What are you looking for in a mate?" Xu Zeng asked as he averted his eyes. He didn’t have the confidence to see the other man. He would listen but not look.

"Hmmm..." Xu Hu Zhe thought earnestly, "He should be hardworking, dedicated to our family, and know how to read."

"Know how to read?" Xu Zeng whipped his head around.

"Yes," Xu Hu Zhe said with another smile. It was nice sharing your thoughts with someone "I recently learned how to read, and I think it is important to learn and keep learning. They don’t need to be a child, but being willing to learn how to read if they can’t already, is very important."

Xu Zeng nodded, what the other man said was true. He’d never really thought about what he wanted in a mate, but... He raised his fingers and ticked them off one by one.

"One, I can read—I’m not a child, but if you want me to be one, I will study hard for the spring exam.

Two, I will be dedicated to my family—Not all demon beasts do so, but I want to mate for life.

Three, I am very hardworking—Even without this body I can keep up with you as you work. I might be slower, but everyone in Sun Village will say I’m hardworking."

With all three fingers ticked off, Xu Zeng looked into Xu Hu Zhe’s face which was now frozen. Why wasn’t he saying anything? Why was his mouth flapping like a fish?

Xu Zeng was agitated. They were having such a nice conversation, why wasn’t he replying? Did he want Xu Feng to match him up with someone else? Was there another he wanted to mate?

"I’m also good at kissing." He added this to sweeten the deal. He was amazing mate material, there shouldn’t even be any additional points.

Xu Zeng’s face got even more pouty. Would Xu Hu Zhe not reply? Wasn’t he good at kissing?

"You don’t think so? But you always make pleasure noises when we kiss and your second head always gets happy when we touch."

"You make noises too!" Xu Hu Zhe shot back, his composure completely gone. If anyone could make him act his age it was this man. He was ten times more frustrated than he had ever been with anyone else.

Xu Zeng was beyond shameless, he was too dense. TOO DENSE!!! Even if they’re both men, this wasn’t a normal conversation.

"You don’t like my noises? I won’t make them anymore." As soon as Xu Zeng spoke he felt uncomfortable. Their kisses really made him feel good, would he be able to keep back the sounds?

Maybe if he thought of zombies he could. But if that was the case, he might vomit when they kiss... But he liked kissing Xu Hu Zhe. How could they be mates who didn’t kiss?

"I won’t make noises, but you aren’t allowed to touch your tongue to the top of my mouth." He finally compromised, "When you do that," he pointed downward, "my little head gets so hard and I can’t help it."

Xu Hu Zhe was speechless yet again, his burning face might soon catch on fire.

"In exchange, we have to kiss every day." Xu Zeng felt this was a good compromise. He should get something from this exchange and kissing made them both feel good. "Also, I want to see your smile every day."

At this, Xu Zeng’s pout was like a distant dream, a mirage that had probably never existed. The thought of seeing Xu Hu Zhe’s smile every day, a smile just for him, made him giddy. It was even better than kissing!

Yet, the silence persisted and Xu Zeng’s smile faded with it.

"Ah," He came to a realization. Maybe he was a prize in a higher realm, but in Dongzhou he was still an ugly ger. He could become a prize for a woman to marry and a man could likely tolerate him for his silver hair, but he wasn’t visually appealing for a man.

He was also quite tall, what man would want a tall ger? Xu Feng had raised his hopes, but his time in Sun Village came racing back. He was an ugly ger then too, but he could have marriage propositions only because he was hardworking.

Xu Hu Zhe was a native of Dongzhou, and should want a fitting bride now that he had a proper title.

"I can’t make myself more pretty or delicate. I’m not small like Bai Mo, no Bai Mo is quite tall. I’m not small like Lee Hua (Midwife Lee), and as far as I know, one can’t grow backward."

Xu Zeng’s face had calmed down, from the radiant excitement and the shining smile to a straight face, a mask to cover his emotions. Seeing the transformation, Xu Hu Zhe’s brain began to snap back on.

"You don’t need to be delicate or pretty like anyone else. You’re perfect as you are."

The two men stared at each other, but Xu Zeng’s smile didn’t come back, not even in the slightest. Instead, he just nodded.

"You won’t become my mate?" He wanted to leave it at that question, but all the questions were tumbling around inside his head begging to be let out to question the other man. "I would sacrifice my time to adventure, my youth, to be your mate."

Xu Zeng wanted to fuss, but he learned from a young age that wouldn’t get him far. No one cared what he had to fuss over. He would need to take this rejection and move on. No more kisses either...

It would be too hard for him and Xu Hu Zhe to be friends now that he understood his feelings. If there was no Xu Feng here, the other world was better, he could spend all his time reading on his own.
