Chapter 290: I Came Bearing Gifts

"Sigh," Xu Feng couldn’t help but sigh with everything happening all at once, it was overwhelming.

The sigh made Xu Hu Zhe curl in on himself even further, but Xu Feng hadn’t noticed. Instead, he attempted to clear his mind and heart of all the worries with the release of his breath. Worrying didn’t solve any of his problems.

The forest enveloped Xu Feng as he continued his brisk walk, each step carrying him deeper into the ancient wilderness. The path ahead narrowed, winding through towering trees that seemed to reach for the heavens.

As he strolled through this pristine landscape, Xu Feng’s thoughts began to shift away from the weight of his worries. The natural beauty around him had a way of soothing his soul. He marveled at the vibrant colors of the wildflowers that carpeted the forest floor, their delicate petals adding splashes of red, purple, and yellow to the verdant landscape.

The chorus of birdsong filled the air, a symphony of life that seemed to celebrate the rich collaborations of nature. Xu Feng couldn’t help but smile as he listened to their melodic tunes, each bird contributing its unique voice to the woodland choir.

However, his thoughts soon returned to the present, and he couldn’t help but chuckle as he imagined the encounter between Xu Zeng and Xu Hu Zhe.

Xu Zeng apparently had a quirky and slightly awkward personality, and he couldn’t help but laugh at the comedic scene between the awkward teen and the awkward ’wild animal’ behind him (Xu Hu Zhe).

Although the thought of Xu Zeng harassing Xu Hu Zhe was funny. The two boys were around the same age, and he would like to introduce them officially one day.

He would like to introduce Xu Zeng to all the important people in his life, even Bai Mo!

As they pressed on, the forest seemed to become even more still.

Nature’s bounty surrounded them, but the silence was becoming overwhelming. Beneath the lush canopy, there were countless secrets hiding within.

Xu Feng’s heart swelled.

It was sad his brother was stuck so far away, but his brother was adorable in Nanshan Estate, and was no doubt adorable in the apocalyptic world as he horded electronics...

’All alone...’

Shaking himself visibly, Xu Feng picked up his pace now completely oblivious to his surroundings, his goal set and his steps becoming larger and larger.

He needed a good laugh to wake him up from all the sad thoughts.

He would cultivate diligently, harnessing all the power he could muster, not only to provide for his family but also to explore and tap into all the wonders of this ancient world.

Nobody was going to eat or breed him without his consent.

And the only type of eating he was going to get, was...

...

A small flush spread on his face...

"Snakes!" Xu Feng announced loudly, any birds in the area fluttered away. But snakes. He was going to feed the snake a snake!

’Mwhahahah!’

He grabbed Xu He Zhe’s hand, and sprinted forward, the giant behind him picking up his pace to keep Xu Feng from being dragged backward onto the forest floor.

.

.

.

In the blink of an eye, the world around Xu Hu Zhe shifted and transformed. It was as if reality itself had twisted and contorted, leaving him wide eyed, bewildered, and filled with nausea.

He sat on the forest floor, or at least he thought he did, but even that certainty began to waver.

For a time, he had sensed a subtle change in the air around him, a feeling of tension that he attributed to the charged atmosphere between himself and Xu Feng. Little did he know that something far more ominous was at play.

As the scenery morphed around him, the lush canopy of the ancient forest gave way to an eerie, otherworldly landscape. The vibrant colors of the woods were replaced by an oppressive, colorless expanse that seemed to stretch endlessly in all directions. The air grew colder, biting into his skin with an intensity that was as chilling as it was unfamiliar.

And there, before him, stood a man—or at least something that resembled a man. But there was nothing human in the ice cold depths of the stranger’s eyes. They were devoid of warmth or compassion, bearing a frigidness that sent shivers down Xu Hu Zhe’s spine.

It was a coldness that spoke of violence, a level of aristocratic disdain that he’d only ever encountered as beggar in the presence of nobility. In the gaze of this mysterious figure, he felt a deep threat to his very existence, as if his life hung in the balance.

Xu Hu Zhe couldn’t tear his gaze away from those eyes, paralyzed by a sense of dread that coursed through his veins. He felt like a helpless prey animal, trapped in the clutches of a relentless predator.

And yet, amidst this unsettling encounter, Xu Feng seemed strangely composed. He moved with an air of familiarity, as though engaged in a casual conversation with an old friend rather than confronting an imminent danger.

The stark contrast between Xu Feng’s calm demeanor and the menacing presence before them only deepened Xu Hu Zhe’s sense of disorientation. As he continued to sit wide eyed and shocked on the unfamiliar ground, he couldn’t help but wonder what had brought them to this surreal place and what kind of entity they now faced.

"This great cultivator," Xu Feng spoke calmly with a bloody package in his hands and a small smile in his voice, "This one has come bearing a gift for your great hospitality. Although this one is not great and noble, and oh so powerful. This one has brought fresh game to honor this great cultivator."

Xu Hu Zhe watched as Xu Feng spouted words to the spectral figure with the larger piece of the snake in his hands as an offering. From the moment Xu Feng spoke, the spectral figure’s harsh presence weighing down on him disappeared.

Instead, the thing focused on Xu Feng. Xu Hu Zhe’s nerves seemed to tighten even more. As he stood up from the ground and prepared to jump in front of his benefactor, the surroundings changed, and the chill in the air became faint.

The aura around the specter warmed, and his face softened. Xu Hu Zhe’s mouth grew slack, his master was amazing.

With that, the dark surroundings cleared, and a new world appeared in his vision.
