Chapter 249: Hard Work and Hard Words
In the fading light of the day, Xu Feng toiled relentlessly within the expansive confines of the greenhouse. The sheer scale of the space dwarfed the greenhouse in Donghua, another proof of the magnitude of this facility.
Xu Feng still wasn’t sure if it was used for research or agriculture in general.
Rows upon rows of raised plant beds stretched out before him, each one beckoning to be brought back to life.
As he worked tirelessly, sweat mingling with the dirt on his skin, Xu Feng’s determination shone brightly. The sunlight cast long, dappled shadows that danced across the soil, a stark difference from the once neglected expanse.
The hours slipped away, and the sunlight eventually began to wane, leaving Xu Feng huffing and puffing in the encroaching darkness. The transition from daylight to twilight was gradual, but he could hardly see in front of his own hands.
He was so focused on bringing this piece of land back to life, that he had lost track of time.
But exhaustion, the old enemy that had been momentarily forgotten, crept up on him. The relentless labor, the lack of sustenance, and the persistent determination to transform the greenhouse took its toll. His body felt the weight of the day, and Xu Feng knew he needed to rest when he could barely stand without swaying.
Reluctantly, he made the decision to retreat to Xu Zeng’s room, but the fervent desire to see his task through lingered. He had made a significant dent in the cleanup effort, but it was not enough for him. The stubborn dedication that had driven him thus far still burned brightly in his heart.
He was stubborn. That was ’A Okay’...
Leaving the confines of the greenhouse, the noises of the outside world assaulted his senses. The distant groans and moans that could only belong to the undead, the eerie calls of unknown creatures, and the encroaching darkness created an atmosphere filled with danger.
The screams of the monsters were only growing as they reveled in the darkness.
Beyond the protective walls of the compound lay a world teeming with danger, a reminder of the unforgiving nature of the apocalyptic reality he found himself in.
Cautiously, Xu Feng navigated his way back to the old dormitory building, his senses on high alert. Every creak of the floorboards, every rustle of the wind, and every distant sound seemed magnified in the silence of the twilight.
Once safely inside and having reached the top floor, he barricaded himself in Xu Zeng’s room. The room that had once belonged to the genius of this world was now a sanctuary for Xu Feng, a place where he could finally catch his breath.
Luckily for him, said genius, loved technology. Although Xu Feng didn’t know how, there was indeed power in this room while there was none anywhere else in the building.
He wasn’t naïve enough to turn on the main lights, but after shutting the window, and blocking off all holes he could possibly find to the outside world, the closet light was cranked on.
With light and security, his taut nerves relaxed a little bit. Just a bit, but it was enough.
He collapsed onto the unmade bed, gasping for air as the physical and mental exhaustion washed over him in waves. The stress of being perpetually on high alert, the relentless physical labor, the lack of sustenance, and the constant shifts between worlds had all taken their toll.
Staring up at the ceiling, Xu Feng’s thoughts drifted to Donghua. He longed for the familiarity of his home, his own bed, and the comforting presence of his loved ones. The weight of homesickness settled over him, an annoying reminder of the world he was now "visiting."
"GURGLE!"
"Grumble, grumble, grumble..."
His stomach had no concept of homesickness. But it knew when it was empty, and it was very, very empty. Its owner needed to feed it!
With a rumbling stomach and a longing for something more substantial, Xu Feng couldn’t ignore the need for nourishment any longer. He began to rummage through Xu Zeng’s belongings, searching for food.
It was clear that, given the circumstances, whether Xu Zeng had rationed his food or not was the least of Xu Feng’s concerns. He would be mindful of how much he ate.
In the collection of provisions, he found compressed biscuits, chocolate bars, and bottles of water. The simple staples weren’t exactly a gourmet meal, but it was enough to fight off hunger temporarily.
Xu Feng tore open the packages, the crackling of plastic punctuating the room’s silence, and ate the rations methodically. Hunger took precedence over culinary pleasure in this world.
After his slow and barely palatable meal, Xu Feng found himself lost in thought once more. His gaze wandered aimlessly, lost in the expanse of space and time, as he pondered his situation.
Then, like a sudden ray of sunlight breaking through the clouds, an idea illuminated his mind. He should leave a message for Xu Zeng, a message that would serve as both a token of gratitude and an introduction.
"I should leave him a message!" Xu Feng exclaimed aloud, the idea taking root in his mind. But what message?
More moments of contemplation followed, during which Xu Feng rummaged through the room’s meager contents. His search yielded a piece of paper with a blank backside, a good canvas for his message.
He penned the note in both the ancient Donghua script and the modern Dongmen script, ensuring that it could be understood by its intended recipient. To leave no room for confusion, he also wrote a memo on the smartphone, leaving the note app open atop the other devices.
The message read:
If you can. Finding less commonly hoarded things like spices, cigarettes, and perfumes, might come in handy in the future. I don’t know if there are any bases, but it seems like you trade supplies like water with other ability users, so things like spices will eventually be useful. In my opinion though, luxuries like camper vans or look up tiny houses—there are mobile ones, ones made of shipping containers, other prefabricated varieties, those are true luxuries if you have the chance. This place is like a paradise. I hope the greenhouse helps.
