Chapter 248: The Withered Greenhouse

Chapter 248: The Withered Greenhouse

As Xu Feng exited the storage building, his heart brimming with anticipation, he couldn’t help but feel an immense sense of excitement. The mysteries of Xu Zeng’s world were unfolding before him, and he was eager to discover more.

No matter the challenges that Xu Zeng faced, Xu Feng felt a deep confidence in the other version of himself. After all, they were fundamentally the same person, sharing a unique bond that transcended worlds.

Right?

As he moved along the slightly cleared pathway, his excitement manifested as a smile that graced his features. Their similarities, the connection he felt with Xu Zeng, filled him with a sense of camaraderie and pride. The world may have been different, but the core of their being remained intertwined.

However, the smile on Xu Feng’s face paused and waned as soon as he stepped through the entrance to the greenhouse. The vibrant hope he had carried moments ago seemed to dwindle into a heavy sense of disappointment.

How?

Why?

What the fuck?

The greenhouse, which he had expected to be a lush haven of greenery and thriving plants, was nothing short of a barren contradiction. It appeared to be a vast and ambitious project, but the reality was a mixture of barrenness and withered vegetation.

The grandeur of this large masterpiece was tragically wasted on Xu Zeng’s hands.

Xu Feng couldn’t comprehend how someone with obvious abilities related to plants, perhaps wood manipulation or growth, could have allowed such a place to fall into disarray. His initial shock left him resembling the bewildered Sun Ming Hua from Yilin Town, but this time, it was not an act or a facade.

He took a moment to gather his thoughts and emotions, allowing the disappointment to wash over him. The sight before him was disheartening, and he struggled to understand how the person he was meant to help had let this greenhouse deteriorate.

"Geniuses are geniuses for a reason," Xu Feng reminded himself as he stood within the vast, bewildering expanse of the greenhouse. He couldn’t help but marvel at the sheer scale and intricacy of the structure that surrounded him.

The greenhouse was a colossal masterpiece, an intricate web of glass and steel that soared high into the air, its magnificence unmatched by anything he had ever seen.

He’d seen larger greenhouses in the countryside when he visited his grandmother, but they weren’t made of glass or steel, they were simpler structures.

The glass panels, though dusty and smeared with dirt, allowed diffuse sunlight to filter through, casting a soft, ethereal glow over the space. The geometric patterns of the framework crisscrossed overhead, forming a complex lattice that created shifting patterns of light and shadow on the ground below.

Rows upon rows of raised plant beds stretched out before him, arranged in meticulous order. Each bed was meticulously labeled with neat rows of greenery, though most of them now lay barren and desolate.

It was clear that whoever lived or worked here before Xu Zeng had once poured their heart and soul into this project, an ambitious effort to harness the power of nature within the confines of this glass sanctuary.

The setup within the greenhouse was equally impressive. An intricate system of automated irrigation and ventilation was integrated seamlessly into the structure, showcasing their understanding of both horticulture and technology.

Tangled vines of what were once thriving plants snaked around the supports and hung from above, their leaves reaching out as if seeking the lost sunlight.

The diversity of flora was astounding, though most were now withered and neglected. The lush greenery that had once flourished in abundance now lay dormant and fragile, a harsh reminder of the passage of time and neglect.

Clusters of vibrant flowers, now wilted, drooped sadly, their vibrant colors faded into muted shades.

In the stillness, Xu Feng spotted a small corner where signs of life persevered. A few vegetables, struggling to survive, reached for the scarce rays of sunlight that filtered through the glass overhead. Tubers buried beneath the soil clung to their last remnants of vitality, determined to endure against all odds.

Despite the current state of disarray and abandonment, the greenhouse held a captivating beauty.

It was a place where nature and science intertwined, where ambition and ingenuity had once flourished. The ghostly remnants of life, the memories of what this sanctuary had once been, lingered in the air like whispers of the past.

As Xu Feng took in the breathtaking yet bittersweet scenery, he couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of respect for the person who had conceived this magnificent creation.

Modern technology really was something.

With renewed determination, Xu Feng knew he had a colossal task ahead of him. The dilapidated state of the greenhouse could and would not deter him; instead, it ignited a fire within him to transform this forsaken place into a thriving oasis.

He was not only doing this for Xu Zeng but also for the chance to repay the genius who was forced to survive in this unforgiving world after living such a meager life with his step mother in Donghua.

There is still sunlight and so much technology. He wasn’t sure if the other buildings were hooked up to solar power, but this one was.

The cleanup would be hard and would take a long time, but he had no experience gathering supplies or killing zombies. He could do this though.

First, he needed to assess the damage and formulate a plan. The once vibrant flora lay withered and lifeless, the very essence of the greenhouse stifled by neglect and time. But the skeletal framework remained, and that was something worth preserving.

Xu Feng set to work using the precious daylight.

As he cleared away debris and decaying vegetation, Xu Feng unearthed rows of raised plant beds that were once brimming with life. The soil beneath was surprisingly rich. Xu Zeng had a lot of foresight in selecting this location for his sanctuary.

Armed with a shovel, Xu Feng turned the soil, aerating it and preparing it for new life to take root.
