As Xu Feng released his grip on Xuan Yang and Xuan Jian, the sensation was similar to a turbulent storm subsiding, leaving behind a calm and serene aftermath. His husbands’ gazes seemed to envelop him like a warm embrace, their unwavering support a lifeline in the chaos that had unfolded.
Yet, neither man had taken their eyes off the nuisances clinging to them, but Xu Feng felt like they were supporting him in some way.
The bustling crowd, once fixated on the dramatic spectacle, began to blur into the background, their presence fading into insignificance compared to the men who meant the world to Xu Feng. His fingers, which had clung to their clothing like a lifeline, slowly unfurled, releasing his tension and fear.
In that key moment, a deep reassurance washed over him. He could feel the strength of their bonds, a connection that transcended words and appearances—maybe, time would tell. It was a reminder that he was not alone in this world, that he had allies who would stand by his side no matter what challenges he faced.
The longing to retreat to the safety of their home and his greenhouse intensified. Xu Feng yearned for the relief of their private sanctuary, where they could discuss the mysteries and wonders they had only come clean about on their journey here.
There, he could also share his thoughts with Xu Hu Zhe, who had always been a solid and firm presence, and maybe find comfort in a peaceful nap.
Yet, in the middle of this desire for comfort, something fundamental had shifted within Xu Feng. It was as if a dormant strength had awakened, a resolve to no longer evade confrontation and to stop hiding behind societal expectations. He recalled the incidents at the bookstore and during the Xuicai exam, moments when he had held back due to fear of tarnishing his reputation and others’ reputations.
But he couldn’t continue playing a risky balancing act, especially when one side showed no willingness to reciprocate (the Xuan family and Sun Ming Hua). The truth was, he didn’t aspire to wield political power, but he understood that he needed to reclaim his dignity and self respect.
Xu Feng’s decision to stand up for himself was like a rising tide, a fierce determination surging within him. The turmoil in his heart began to settle, replaced by a newfound resolve. As the crowd continued to murmur and gossip around him, he silently vowed that he would no longer allow anyone to trample on his pride and self worth.
He didn’t look down on the locals, and they shouldn’t look down on him. Period.
Sun Ming Hua’s transformation from a modest truth teller to a damsel in distress was as abrupt as a sudden storm on a calm day. His eyes, once filled with righteous conviction, now gleamed with a cunning desperation. He had seamlessly shifted his role, casting himself as the vulnerable victim who feared the imposing presence of the "big and scary" ger before him.
In the midst of Xu Feng’s bewilderment, Sun Ming Hua seized the opportunity to detach himself from the towering man, his gaze never straying from the "ugly" ger. It was as though he had no qualms about striking below the belt, using any means necessary to achieve his goal.
The crowd, initially drawn in by the unfolding drama, watched in a mix of curiosity and unease. The atmosphere had shifted from a mere spectacle to a confrontation laden with personal vendettas and hidden motives.
As Sun Ming Hua clung to Xuan Yang and hid from Xu Feng with feigned fear, his calculated performance was met with a mixture of sympathy and skepticism from onlookers. The lines between truth and deceit had blurred, and the stage had transformed.
The small and bright ger with a refined and restrained temperament was the good guy, and the tall and androgynous ger shrouded with mystery was uncontested bad guy. Everything was in black and white, with no shades of grey.
Xu Feng took in this new play. It would be a great advance for Sun Ming Hua if it were anyone else. The ger was obviously used to getting his way, from the Central Bookstore to the Xuicai exam and further. This was the way.
It was a pity his brother was nowhere to be found.
"Ahem," As Xu Feng cleared his throat and firmly grounded himself, his attention focused solely on the two men he cherished and the situation he found himself in. The encircling crowd, with their murmurs and prying eyes, became nothing more than a distant backdrop. The only individuals who truly mattered in this turbulent scene were the ones connected by the bonds of the Nanshan Estate.
With Xu Feng’s weight removed from him, Xuan Yang’s temper flared, restrained yet potent. With the new mobility, in one swift, practiced movement, he effortlessly detached Sun Ming Hua from his person, displaying a combination of grace and strength that left no room for further physical contact.
Beside him, Xuan Jian followed suit, though with a touch less grace and a tad more force as he unceremoniously dislodged the ger who had clung to him moments earlier. The atmosphere around them became charged, teeming with unspoken tensions and unvoiced emotions.
In the blink of an eye, everything had escalated, yet it was clear that the Xu Feng’s group’s unity remained unshaken. Xu Feng, previously caught between his husbands, shifted his attention from Xuan Yang to Sun Ming Hua, his gaze warm and affectionate for his spouse before chilling as it turned toward the determined ger before him.
While Xuan Yang was undoubtedly capable of delivering a sharp and well thought out response, Xu Feng knew it was time to put an end to this game. Sun Ming Hua had chosen to play, and now he would face the consequences.
They might not have the same talent level, but it was still a game two could play.
It was a game that two could play, and Xu Feng was ready to take his turn.
