Chapter 194: Then There Was Danger
Xu Feng’s heart raced, his chest tightening with every step as he dashed towards the sound of Bai Mo’s voice. Panic knotted his stomach, his breaths coming in shallow gasps. He hadn’t realized how far he’d strayed, how much deeper they’d ventured into the dense forest, or how long they’d been lost in their separate pursuits. In this moment, he felt like a complete fool.
"Momo!" Xu Feng shouted, his voice wavering with fear and urgency. He tried to gauge the direction of Bai Mo’s voice, but the trees seemed to swallow up sound, disorienting him further.
His hands trembled as he discarded the treasures he had gathered, the forest floor now littered with the fruits of his foraging adventure. If something had happened to his friend... his best friend, Xu Feng couldn’t bear the thought.
Could someone make a best friend in only 3 months? If that was possible, Bai Mo was without a doubt Xu Feng’s best friend. He was closer to him than anyone he’d ever met in his last life.
He never had a friend in junior high, senior high, or even his brief stint in university, who he was able to be so comfortable around. Xu Feng didn’t even feel strange using modern slang with his ancient friend.
During the discord of his own pounding heart, he heard Bai Mo’s voice, faint yet distinct, screaming his name, "Feng Feng!"
The desperation in Bai Mo’s voice sent shivers down Xu Feng’s spine. Every second felt like an eternity, and he cursed himself for allowing them to be separated in the first place. How could he live with himself if...
Bai Mo had wormed his way into Xu Feng’s heart so swiftly, it was impossible to deny the connection they shared.
He quickened his pace, his breaths hitching as he ran, his mind consumed by fear and regret. Yet, within the turmoil, a flicker of thought touched him—a fleeting sensation that made his skin prickle.
It was a whisper in his mind, almost like an ancient memory brushing against his consciousness, a faint tug drawing him toward a certain direction. He couldn’t quite place it, but it felt like a call—an inexplicable sensation guiding him, urging him to follow a specific path.
Xu Feng immediately ignored the urge, the pull. It was all the pulls and urges that had gotten them in this mess in the first place. And a thought flittered through his mind briefly before disappearing, never to show it’s ugly head again. ’This wouldn’t be happening if Xuan Yang and Xuan Jian were here.’
As quickly as it came, the thought left. Xu Feng wanted to rage. If a certain stubborn meat head would train him, he wouldn’t be so short of breath in this critical moment. And if a certain know it all slippery snake young master wasn’t so controlling...
’Focus.’
Xu Feng redirected all his energy into his legs. Forcing his brain to be silent was difficult, but he needed to redirect all his energy. The only person he should be wishing was here, was Xu Hu Zhe.
The urgency in Bai Mo’s voice was his compass, and he followed it, determined to find his friend no matter the cost.
As Xu Feng surged forward even as his eyes blurred slightly stinging, the once calm forest transformed around him. The rustling leaves and the whispering winds seemed to join forces, creating a symphony that echoed through the woodland. Birds fluttered away in a flurry, their previous harmonious calls replaced by panicked chirps as they scattered in his wake.
The skittish animals that had earlier treated them with nonchalance now darted away, creating a corridor for Xu Feng to sprint through. His silver hair, caught in the sunlight filtering through the branches, gleamed like a beacon in the shadowy forest. His movements were swift, agile, almost as if he were a forest sprite dancing among the trees.
It was an uncanny sight, the woodland parting before him as though recognizing a force beyond the ordinary. Earlier, it had embraced him, offering a sense of safety and familiarity, but now it seemed reluctant, withholding the same comfort from Bai Mo.
The forest had lulled Xu Feng into a false sense of security, allowing him to wander carefree until this moment. But it had failed to extend the same protection to Bai Mo, who was now vulnerable to whatever danger lurked within the shadows.
It was a jarring realization that struck Xu Feng as he ran, this forest was not as benevolent as it had initially seemed. There was clear favoritism at play. Should he be angry if he was the one favored?
With each step, Xu Feng felt a rising sense of foreboding.
As Xu Feng raced through the dense undergrowth, his heart pounding in his chest, another scream pierced the air.
This time, it was much closer, and the frantic neighing of horses echoed through the trees. The chilling combination of screams meant that Bai Mo was in immediate danger, and whatever had startled his friend had also unsettled the horses.
With every step, the forest’s grip seemed to loosen, the shadows growing lighter as Xu Feng drew closer to the edge. He could hear the commotion growing louder, the urgency of the situation propelling him forward.
Then, as he broke through the final curtain of foliage, Xu Feng was greeted by a sight that made his blood run cold. There, at the clearing’s edge on top of a stump, stood Bai Mo, his eyes wide with terror, frantically waving his arms to ward off the danger.
The horses, tethered to a nearby tree, neighed and reared in distress, their agitation apparent. It was evident that whatever had alarmed Bai Mo had also unsettled the animals, adding to the chaos unfolding at the forest’s edge.
At that moment, Xu Feng’s heart lurched with relief and concern. He had finally reached Bai Mo, who, despite the danger, had managed to navigate his way toward the clearing. Momo was not only intelligent but also had a great sense of direction, a blessing in this situation.
Without hesitation, Xu Feng darted toward Bai Mo, his eyes scanning the area for any sign of threat. The sense of urgency was tangible as he reached his friend’s side, ready to defend against whatever lurked nearby.
