Chapter 193: Spring Harvest Pt.2

Xu Feng only smiled in response to Momo’s earlier complaints. He was the one feeding Momo, Yang, Jian, Hu Zhe, Si, San, and everyone else he personally cooked for. He always made sure to make nutritious and delicious foods. He would feel unaccomplished if he didn’t feed everyone well...when he felt like cooking.

To better feed the group in Nanshan estate, he needed to harvest as many good things as he could find. It was still early spring and the items that could be found would only grow. Even the different areas would have different harvests.

All the while, the animals seemed to have welcomed the pair of foxes without bias, treating them as part of the scenery. For Xu Feng who hadn’t had much luck with animals since he’d transmigrated, the relaxed nature of the animals made him happy and even more relaxed.

As Xu Feng traced his steps back toward Bai Mo, he caught sight of a larger patch of bamboo, just a little farther from where they had been foraging. The previous patch had been sizeable, but this one was extensive, boasting an abundance of fresh bamboo shoots waiting to be harvested.

His hands already filled with the treasures he gathered, Xu Feng hesitated for a moment. However, the allure of the larger patch was irresistible. He couldn’t miss out on this opportunity.

"Looks like I can’t resist a good harvest," Xu Feng muttered to himself, a small grin forming on his face. He approached the bamboo and reached for his kitchen knife tucked into his clothes.

Carefully and methodically, he began to slice through the bamboo stems, harvesting the fresh shoots that peeked out from the soil. The task required precision, but Xu Feng was focused and patient.

Among the forest’s natural symphony of bird calls and rustling leaves, the noise of their foraging seemed like just another note in the melody. Initially startled by their presence, the birds and animals gradually grew accustomed to the gers’ activity, returning to their usual chatter and movement.

Meanwhile, Bai Mo had initially found the idea of foraging for mushrooms and other forest treasures somewhat dull. However, as Xu Feng shared his knowledge and passion for the activity, Bai Mo’s perspective shifted. He found himself intrigued by the variety of edible finds in the forest and the joy Xu Feng took in discovering them.

All the while the noises in the forest were like white noise to the two gers harvesting the treasures of the forest.

The simple pleasure of harvesting these natural treasures among the calming sounds of the forest slowly worked its magic on Bai Mo. His initial skepticism transformed into fascination, relishing the experience of uncovering these culinary gems hidden within nature’s embrace.

The two quickly lost track of time. Had it been an hour or several hours at this point? No one was sure, both Xu Feng and Bai Mo had been sucked into their separate treasure hunting activities without looking back.

A short horse riding trip, turned into a long trip and a foraging adventure, and time lost its meaning entirely after some period.

As the sun crossed the sky, its position shifted imperceptibly, casting elongated shadows across the forest floor. Xu Feng and Bai Mo, consumed by their individual quests for treasures, had unknowingly ventured deeper into the dense woodland.

Minutes stretched into hours, the passage of time becoming an unclear concept as they scoured the forest for its hidden bounty. What began as a leisurely ride and a simple foraging attempt had spiraled into an odyssey of discovery, each step leading them farther away from the familiarity of the outskirts.

The forest enveloped them in its lush embrace, its whispers and rustling leaves accompanying their search for nature’s treasures. Hours blended into one another, the sun’s journey across the heavens marking the passing of a day slipping away unnoticed.

Yet, lost in their own pursuits, neither Xu Feng nor Bai Mo paid attention to the shifting daylight or the changing hues of the sky. Their focus remained fixed on the forest’s bounty, forging deeper into the unknown with every step, blissfully unaware of the passage of time.

In the nearby village of Nanshan village, life continued its usual hum, distant and muted against the backdrop of nature’s song. Voices of villagers echoed, mingling with the sounds of working craftsmen and children playing in the lanes. Dogs barked intermittently, adding to the symphony of everyday life.

Located even closer, the hums of life in the Nanshan estate were also thrumming with life. Some were cleaning up after a hearty lunch, others were sitting down for lunch. There were many lives in this one location.

"Aaaaaaaaah!"

Yet, in the outskirts of the forest, Xu Feng’s focus was suddenly shattered by a bloodcurdling scream, slicing through the tranquility like a sharp blade. His heart pounded against his chest as the scream was followed by an ominous growl that reverberated through the trees.

In that moment, Xu Feng suddenly came back to himself. How long had they been in the forest? How deep in said forest, and how far away from Bai Mo had he gone?

Who, What, Where, and Why. How.

Panic surged within Xu Feng as he grappled with the sudden eruption of chaos. His mind raced through the options: fight, flight, or freeze. Every fiber of his being screamed for action, yet his instincts were tangled in a web of confusion.

This was Xu Feng’s first time venturing into the forest alone, and the prospect of an attack in this unfamiliar territory was terrifying. The adrenaline coursing through him urged him to make a swift decision.

Instinctively, his hand darted toward the knife secured at his waist. Though Bai Mo held the basket as they explored, Xu Feng had retained the knife, his experience proving useful in dispatching two snakes they had encountered earlier. Now, facing an unknown threat, he gripped the blade tightly, ready to defend himself and Bai Mo if necessary.

Xu Feng takes a deep breath before running toward Bai Mo’s scream, ready to fight a lion if needed. Shouldn’t wild animals love them? They had immortal bloodline, the were somewhat related...
