The Ger's Contract Marriage [BL]
Chapter 166: A Cranky Ger

Chapter 166: A Cranky Ger

Xu Feng cocooned himself in his blankets, twisting and turning until he resembled a human burrito, his thoughts winding toward the distant memory of a burrito he hadn’t savored in far too long.

Maybe a zongzi or a burrito should be on his cooking agenda soon. In the background, the birds serenaded the spring air as Xu Feng gazed into the void.

In the middle of the picturesque spring setting, a world infused with the spirit of the season, Xu Feng found himself still in a complex emotional state, feeling both undesired or unlovable and yearning for affection all at the same time.

The setting was vibrant, teeming with signs of spring love. The birds sang in pairs, chasing each other as the twitted back and forth to their friends, family, and lovers. Yet within him lurked a sense of being both small—small but still a big ger—and needy, a massive zongzi lost in a vast world full of unknowns.

Uncertainty lingered within him, despite the assurance of his value within the dynamics of the trio. He had created a haven for them, yet the stability of his place in this supposed "home" remained uncertain.

How long could he be a part of their theoretical "home"?

He could fuss and fight with both men, throw as many passive aggressive fits as he wanted, but the big problem wasn’t about Xuan Yang or Xuan Jian lack of attentiveness to his viewpoints, although that too would be appreciated.

In any relationship, be it a couple or a thruple, mutual understanding and compromise should be the cornerstone.

"Meh." The zongzi exclaimed to himself as he continued to roll around on the oversized bed.

In the middle of his bed burrito antics, Xu Feng’s expressions contorted like a disturbingly cranky zongzi, flickering between sadness, anger, and a sense of being adrift, lost in it all. His emotions played out vividly on his face, each feeling taking its turn in the limelight.

Every now and then, he’d deliberately squish his metaphorical zongzi face against the bed, as if to create a pretense of indifference, attempting to shield himself from the attack of emotions.

Beyond this internal chaos and this hissy fit, his true concern lay in the uncertainty that saturated their lives. This was precisely why he was so determined to explore the Nanshan mountains right in his backyard. Xu Feng needed to plant roots.

He had a home, and now he needed to be able to support his home.

In his original world, people often said: ’Do what you love, and work becomes play. Do what you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life.’

There were so many versions to this one saying, and as a new ger, aiming for a relaxed lifestyle without much ado, this mantra held a tempting promise, that was of course if he could find something that didn’t feel like a chore and unnecessary politics.

He didn’t want to constantly fight against the world, just to survive in it.

Becoming a scholar worked as a dual solution for Xu Feng: it secured his independence once the contract ended and provided a potential source of income. But that was only if he made the right connections with nobles and rich families, even becoming a teacher required connections.

However, even with this back up plan, his preferred money making ideas all stemmed from the mountains.

Tapping into the farm lands to be provided by Lady Xuan appeared unlikely, as she obviously regarded him with disdain. Without a stable income, becoming a landlord also seemed out of reach by his own power.

"Ahhhh!" a sudden scream pierced through the serenity of Xu Feng’s room, it seemed to dance off the walls before fading into the air.

"I feel better," Xu Feng muttered, trying to convince himself more than anyone else.

A cranky but well rested Xu Feng peered into the mirror, greeted by his well moisturized face.

Si and San observed their young mistress and master with a mix of concern and curiosity. They were sent over by the other two masters of the Nanshan estate after Xuan Jian was scolded by the cranky ger when responding to the morning scream.

Despite the well rested appearance, Xu Feng felt a weight on him, as if the burdens he’d been carrying for so long were suddenly visible. It was as if the worries he’d concealed since his wedding night were now laid bare.

With the doctor kept waiting, Xu Feng worked to make himself presentable for a noble young miss (enough theatrics for one morning, after all). He was hoping to bury his outburst with Xuan Jian and the early morning screams under an appearance of calm.

San finally broke the heavy silence, "The doctor from the Yiran clinic in Yilin town is waiting in the large reception room of Blooming Courtyard, awaiting Master Feng."

From the main house, to the large reception hall, the three moved swiftly in silence. Si and San were both smart girls, and they knew better than to poke at the cranky bear Xu Feng was currently.

"Doctor," Xu Feng greeted politely as he entered the reception hall, nodding to both Xuan Jian and Xuan Yang who were seated with the doctor.

Doctor Ping arrived bright and early in a carriage, personally summoned by a servant. It marked the doctor’s first visit to the mysterious Xuan family’s estate, a family that many sought to curry favor with.

Despite the prestige, the doctor remained composed and collected, showing no signs of excessive surprise. He didn’t even bat and eye at Xu Feng’s silver mane.

Xu Feng couldn’t recall if this particular doctor had attended to him during his previous sickness...sore throat, but the elderly man’s behavior radiated kindness and respect. Both were good signs.

As Doctor Ping meticulously read Xu Feng’s pulse, Xuan Jian made attempts to draw nearer to him. Despite maintaining their composed personas in front of the guest, both Xuan Yang and Xuan Jian gravitated toward Xu Feng like moths to a flame.

Moths with an iceberg façade and a young master’s aloofness.

Their obvious concern for Xu Feng, or possibly the child, confused him. Which one they were worried about mattered, but how was he supposed to know?

The conflicting emotions swirled within him, muddled and confusing. Xu Feng allowed Xuan Jian’s closeness, finding his icy exterior endearing, a show that melted away to reveal a unique warmth shared only with him and Xuan Yang.

However, the previous night’s incident lingered in Xu Feng’s thoughts throughout. The sense of intimacy felt hollow, almost counterfeit. It made him question his own authenticity, feeling something like a glass doll, simply a display piece, not even a true trophy wife.
