The Ger's Contract Marriage [BL]
Chapter 116: Bai Mo

Chapter 116: Bai Mo

According to Bai Mo, he was indeed a member of the Bai family, albeit a very, very, very distant branch family. No one in the last three generations of their branch of the family had exhibited any traits of the immortal bloodline.

When he was born, there was still hope that his generation would bring forth many with the power of the immortal blood, ushering in a resurgence. His parents believed he would be the savior of their declining branch, but reality proved otherwise.

Bai Mo had light brown hair and brown eyes when he was born. The faint hint of light brown gave his family a glimmer of hope, but they were ultimately disappointed. When he was checked by the current patriarch of the Bai family in Jinghua, it dashed the last hope of their family making a comeback.

Even so, Bai Mo grew up in a loving household of three—a life he knew was not common. There were no concubines or interlopers in his parents relationship, and he had no siblings to compete with him for anything.

While he had no chance to bring honor to his family through bloodline traits, Bai Mo was determined to achieve distinction as a high-ranking scholar. The Bai family in Yilin was so small that it consisted of only Bai Mo, his dad, and his father.

Bai Mo’s dad, originally from the Deng family, had been a sickly beauty. He was fortunate to have given birth to one child, and his father refused to take any concubines. They married for true love, and were set in their ways.

Before Bai Mo could attempt to bring honor to his family, it began to unravel. His family fell apart before his 13th birthday, as his dad passed away due to birthing complications despite doctors deeming it impossible for him to get pregnant again.

His father, devastated by the loss, grieved for nearly two years before joining Bai Mo’s dad in the grave.

Since then, more than six years had passed, with three years spent grieving each parent’s death and shouldering the responsibilities of his household. Bai Mo was on the brink of turning 17 in the upcoming year, and he was just now preparing for the first scholar’s exam in the spring.

His peers, such as Kang Han, Sun Ming, and the other boys, had already achieved the rank of Xuicai or at least had taken the exam several times. Kang Han and Sun Ming were now aiming for the second scholar’s exam in the fall to pass the provincial level examination and gain the Juren title.

The other ger they had encountered, MingHua, was younger, at only 15 years old, and should be preparing for the spring exam, the local exam for the Xuicai title.

Bai Mo was determined to take both exams, having practiced for six years already, and as he spoke with Xu Feng, it was clear that he wanted to bring honor to his deceased parents.

He was confident in passing the preliminary exams in the spring. Xu Feng wasn’t confident in passing his first scholars’ examination, but Bai Mo had filled him with more energy. It was like he’d been filled with chicken blood.

Xu Feng looked at the cute ger in front of him, now understanding some of the story of Bai Mo’s life. They continued to converse animatedly, finding common ground and getting along well.

Xu Feng was also an orphan, at least in this new world. He had no parents to claim, and he wasn’t entirely certain of his bloodline ties to the Dengs or the Bais.

He somehow felt a connection to Bai Mo, who also had no warm feelings toward either family.

They hadn’t bothered with Bai Mo when his parents passed. Instead, they seemed more interested in claiming his land and wealth, the wealth his father and dad had built and inherited from their own parents.

"This is good; we can go over topics that are sure to be on the examination!" Bai Mo was visibly excited at the prospect of finding a friend of similar age to study with. One that wouldn’t call him a jinx.

Xu Feng initially appeared aloof and unfriendly, but as they started to get to know each other, Bai Mo hoped to become closer with the other ger.

Xu Feng, however, seemed guilty. Bai Mo had been studying for over six years, was enrolled in the best school in Yilin town, and was a serious student. Xu Feng, on the other hand, was more interested in exploring the new seeds he had just purchased.

He seemed to always have play, adventure, and sleep on the brain...

"Yeah..." Xu Feng’s response was drawn out, and he couldn’t meet the earnest gaze of his new friend. "It would be a good idea."

Bai Mo observed Xu Feng’s newly pierced ears and hesitation before he decided to ask a more personal question, lowering his voice as he blushed once again, "It looks like you just got married. Maybe we should wait until your first moon, and meet when the weather permits."

Xu Feng paused to do the mental math in his head before beaming with realization. Xuan Yang was once again his saving grace. "Yes, it’s only been a few days. We’ll wait a month."

"Only a few days?" Bai Mo was surprised, finding Xu Feng a lot stranger than he initially thought. However, he felt an inexplicable desire to get to know the other ger better. He had a sense that they would become good friends.

"Okay... My home is the Bai mansion on the west end of Yilin town. If you send a servant to call, I will come the following day, or I can send a servant to your home?"

"Yeah, you can send someone to the Nanshan estate on Nanshan." Xu Feng was still preoccupied with the mental math and didn’t notice Bai Mo’s wide-eyed, plate looking gaze.

He was more concerned about starting his studies with Xuan Yang. The scholar’s exam was a mystery, and he didn’t know if he would be prepared. How could he be a good study partner if he wasn’t ready?

Having friends was hard.
