The Ger's Contract Marriage [BL] -
Chapter 115: A New Friend
Chapter 115: A New Friend
The nosy audience in the bookstore quickly scattered, avoiding Xu Feng’s icy glare. The guilt-ridden bystanders pretended to be engrossed in books or scrolls, doing anything to avoid making eye contact with the chilly silver-haired ger.
Finally, Xu Feng exchanged a quick glance with the storekeeper, whose eyes widened, and his face flushed in embarrassment.
Rolling his eyes at the lack of courage displayed by the onlookers, Xu Feng turned his attention to the only person who had dared to assist him in the entire bookstore.
He observed the ger, a man around his age, dressed in high-quality black silken robes and an equally dark overcoat. The new ger had a cute, rather than effeminate, appearance, resembling an endearing younger brother.
Xu Feng found this ger adorable in his own way, not preferring the overly delicate type like MingHua, who was too "refined" for his personal taste.
Xu Feng had noticed some other gers wearing makeup among the Nanshan villagers but with more subtlety and moderation, unlike the excessive use seen among the townsfolk. Maybe the ideal type was different everywhere, but the heavy makeup was too much for his tastes.
Xu Feng observed the new ger, unsure of where to begin. He wasn’t particularly skilled at meeting new people, but he genuinely appreciated the help he had received. "Thank you for your assistance," he began with a friendly smile.
The ger, who had been strategically avoiding eye contact with Xu Feng, couldn’t evade a conversation any longer. He looked into Xu Feng’s eyes, his face flushing with embarrassment. "Of course, it’s what a scholar...no, it’s what any decent person should do."
Hearing this, Xu Feng nodded approvingly before raising his voice for the lingering spectators to hear. "YES, IT’S WHAT ANY DECENT PERSON SHOULD DO! ESPECIALLY WHEN A MARRIED GER IS BEING HARASSED IN BROAD DAYLIGHT."
*Clack
A bystander in the bookstore had dropped the paper weight he had been "inspecting," for at least twenty minutes straight. With this last murderous comment by Xu Feng any bystanders with a shred of pride had scampered off out of hearing range.
The ger’s eyes widened as he took in the situation, looking at the refined silver-haired ger who had just stood up for himself and scared away the gossip seekers. He knew Xu Feng was right in his reaction, but it was rare for a ger, especially a married one, to draw attention to themselves so boldly.
Even if he was already a married ger, one’s reputation was important in a small town like Yilin, where everyone knew everyone.
"My name is Bai Mo," the boy introduced calmly, his grin still present. "You must be new to Yilin. I’m sorry for the way you were treated. Scholars should know better. I’ll speak to the head teacher to ensure this doesn’t happen again. Kang Han has always had a difficult temperament, and it’s likely too late for him to change. However, some of the boys behind him are much better when not influenced by him, like Sun Ming. Sun Ming is usually quite refined, but his younger brother, Sun MingHua, is likely to be engaged soon, possibly after the spring exam. They might be considering pairing him with Kang Han, which could be why Sun Ming kept his silence for so long. He usually detests injustice and disrespect..."
Once Bai Mo started talking, he became like a motor mouth. Xu Feng wasn’t sure if this was his normal demeanor or if it was just nervousness, but he listened patiently, taking in all the information.
Bai Mo seemed like a kind and honorable young man.
After a few long sentences, he seemed to realize he had been chattering one sidedly for quite some time. His face flushed a deeper red making him look even more amiable.
"Sorry, I’m not normally this chatty..."
"It’s alright," Xu Feng grinned in return, "I seem to have this effect on people."
Xu Feng had noticed that he had the ability to make others more talkative. He had managed to break through the icy facade of Xuan Jian and even get the usually reticent Xuan Yang to talk more.
Erlang was another example; he would often nag Xu Feng about his spending habits when they were together. Xu Feng had a talent for extracting conversation from those around him, which could be both a blessing and a curse.
Bai Mo exclaimed with an appreciative tone as he took in the silky lilt in Xu Feng’s voice and the cute dimples that appeared on either side of his face when he smiled.
It was easy to see why this silver-haired ger could attract trouble even in a quiet bookstore. Fortunately, he was already married, or he would have his hands full in Yilin town.
"My name is Xu Feng," he finally remembered to introduce himself.
"Surname Xu?" Bai Mo questioned.
At this, both of Xu Feng’s eyebrows shot up. Should he introduce himself as a bride of the Xuan family? But that didn’t sit right with him, and he would be leaving the family soon enough.
If he were to make a friend in Yilin, he didn’t want his connection to the Xuan’s to be the basis of the relationship.
"Not Bai or Deng?" Bai Mo continued to probe, still lost in confusion.
Then it dawned on Xu Feng that Bai Mo should be from the Bai family, and the other major family in the fox immortal bloodline was the Deng family. Xu Feng had silver hair, which indicated he had the fox bloodline.
"Oh, you were helping out a fellow fox?" Xu Feng’s smile grew more mischievous but still friendly.
"No!" Bai Mo responded quickly and flustered, "Yes. I mean no, I didn’t do it because of your bloodline. I just assumed you were from either the Bai or Deng main family. I’m from a distant branch family of the Bai’s, so bloodline doesn’t mean much to me."
"It doesn’t?" Xu Feng inquired, intrigued by Bai Mo’s response.
"It doesn’t" Bai Mo answered with a straight and honest face, "My blood is so far removed from the main family that we haven’t had anyone with active fox bloodline in nearly a hundred years. I was the last hope of my family, but I failed them."
