Chapter 69: Traces of dark magic
When Bree arrived at her office, she wasn’t surprised to see Ahmar and Kevin looking through things, next to them was another young man who jumped at her arrival and bowed his head at once. " I wish glory upon the sun of the Empire," greeted the young man and Bree nodded as she looked at Ahmar before asking, " What’s going on? Did you find something worth looking for?"
" I have," answered Ahmar as he raised his head up from the documents he was looking at and smoothly walked to her. " There are traces of someone’s scent, this recruit——" he pointed to the young man. " has a very good sense of smell and he was able to pick up the scent that has been wiped clean by living that window of your office open." His finger diverted to the open window behind her chair. " The scent was very faint for me or Kevin to catch on to that’s why we had to bring in this recruit because in all the recruits he was the only mutt with a good nose."
" A werewolf, general," corrected the young man with a little bit of hesitation on his face. " I am a werewolf."
" I know what I said," muttered Ahmar before he turned his head and looked at the young man with an expression that was full of annoyance and snapped, " Shut up, Thomas."
Thomas immediately fell silent and with an expression that was very similar to an adorable puppy who was scolded for no reason turned to look at Kevin, who shot him a reassuring smile.
" So, did you look for the person whose scent you have picked up?" asked Bree as she looked at Ahmar and then walked to her chair, as soon as she got closer to her chair, a flicker of annoyance flashed in her mind. The chair seemed to have been touched and used like someone sat on it.
" I did, I sent one of my men to bring the person who smells of gooseberries, jam and lemongrass," said Ahmar as he followed her gaze and looked at the chair that Bree was looking at but wasn’t taking a seat. " What’s wrong?"
" Someone sat on it," said Bree, just like the throne in the throne room, this chair was also her possession, no one else other than her was allowed to sit on it. But last night the person who infiltrated the office, not only sat on it but they also seemed to have left a trace of them for Bree to find. " Look, carefully on the armrest, whoever sat on it scratched it with their nails so that I find out in just one glance that they have used it."
Ahmar and everyone else glances at the chair and sure enough, there were faint marks of nail scratches on the armrest. This struck as ominous to them, someone sneaking inside the Queen’s office and stealing a document to discredit her was one thing but someone marking the possessions of the Queen was another thing, it was as if they were silently declaring war on the Queen and everything that she owns.
" Dion," said Ahmar as he turned to look at Bree’s aide, his eyes flashing with numerous possibilities and annoyance. He couldn’t believe that someone would sneak inside Bree’s office, whoever it was —— they were able to get past such heavy security and even throw off the knights that he trained. What was more they even seemed to have ideas bigger than their stations. " Throw this chair and get another one for temporary use, once you are done ask someone to crave another chair for the Queen, we don’t need anything that has been used by someone else because of their overly inflated ideas."
He knew someone whose ideas were bigger than their entire existence was, a part of him was inclined on believing that it was her but another part could not believe it because ——
"There is another thing," said Kevin as he attracted everyone’s attention to himself. " We found traces of black magic."
Dion who was carrying the chair out dropped it on the floor as he wildly turned to look at Kevin. "Blac. Black magic?"
Kevin nodded his head looking grim. " I know it is hard to believe but it’s the truth, we found out that the lock of the door has been tampered with with dark magic and there were still traces of it left when we came here to look for clues." Then he slightly tilted his head towards Ahmar before continuing. " I wanted to start a full warrant search after finding out that traces of dark magic has been found but the General stopped me, he didn’t want others to find out that the dark forces have started to recover their strength again."
" We all know how it played out the last time, the Emperor let the news of dark forces leak out," said Ahmar sounding defensive at once. " The court turned into a mess and every minister turned their back on the royal family, they blamed the heirs and the Emperor for being too lazy and greedy, saying that it was their fault that they couldn’t stop the dark forces before the buds of dark magic bloomed. We are already in enough trouble as it is, if the news that the traces of dark magic is found was to be leaked due to the high alert search then it will only bring more discredit to you, your majesty. Everything needs to be done at the right time."
" He is right," said Bree leaning against the table behind her. " We can’t let anyone know that traces of dark magic were found and that too right in the office of the Queen, it will be like slapping our own faces."
" But what’s more important is that how can dark forces be at upheaval?" asked Dion sounding alarmed, the chair was still lying next to his feet. " We all know that the dark forces went down when her majesty’s half-brother Leon was executed!"
