Chapter 264: Warnings and Troubles
Magistrate Axton smiled politely when he heard Yakov’s words. He tipped his chin to the chairs opposite him and said to Yakov, "You might as well take a seat, your highness. I don’t think you wish to discuss this matter while standing up, right?"
"No," said Yakov as he sat down at the long table along with Ahmar. "Now that we are seated, I would like to question what you are going to do about Eve and the rest of her brothers. Though I admit that our family and theirs did have an agreement, that agreement fell through when I found my mate, and the one to fulfil that agreement on my behalf was my half brother. Now that he is missing, I don’t think it’s my responsibility to fulfil the agreement, as I already have a mate. So would you mind explaining what’s with the letter that they have sent to my wife, the empress?"
Although Yakov spoke in a casual tone and his posture was relaxed, Magistrate Axton knew that the man was anything but relaxed.
Power seemed to ooze through every pore of his body, and his coiled and bunched muscles seemed to be ready to strike at the smallest provocation.
He was not foolish enough to provoke a full-blooded wolf shifter and had no idea what his grandniece and the others were thinking while writing a letter that was full of lies to the empress.
Though he understood that Eve’s ego was hurt because of two continuous rejections, this was not the way to deal with it.
He asked the butler to bring some cakes and snacks for the two consorts and Ahmar, who was apparently hungry, immediately picked up the cake and started eating. Anyway, Yakov seemed to be in control of the conversation and he didn’t need to jump in the middle.
"You don’t need to worry about Eve and her brothers. Though I am the only elder left in their family, my words still have some weight. I can’t and I won’t let what they have done slide," Magistrate Axton told Yakov. "What they have done can cause serious trouble for you and your family, and it might even lead to the execution of the entire family, as it will count as betraying the empress. I can only say that the empress was extra generous with you, first consort, as she had left you alone even after reading that ridiculous letter that Eve and her brothers had written."
"Indeed," Yakov’s eyes narrowed as he sneered, "I believe that was what your grandniece was hoping for. The execution of my entire clan, I want to ask you, Magistrate Axton. Though my family did break the agreement, shifters are not as shy and restrained as humans in most of the cases. Is it really worth killing me and my entire family just because she didn’t get married like she was supposed to?"
"I believe that I deserve an explanation regarding this matter."
Magistrate Axton was quiet for a moment. "I have already spoken to Eve about this matter; she claims that she was angry and upset and did something in the heat of the moment but I know that her words were nothing but lies. I have dealt with her and made sure that she would not tell such lies that might implicate you or your families but her—her brothers—they are a different story. They do not wish to listen to me and as they are officials of different fiefs, I hardly can control them."
"And you have no idea why she made such a claim, do you?" Ahmar questioned and Magistrate Axton smiled in response.
"I wish I could answer that question for you; unfortunately, even after being mated for more than seventy years, I cannot understand how a woman operates, so I am afraid that I have no answer to that question."
"There is one more thing that you need to understand, Magistrate Axton," said Yakov. "This is the last and only chance for you to make these siblings stop with their false claims. You might already be aware of the fact that the empress has her hands full due to the current situation that is slowly turning worse. We cannot help her but at most we can at least make sure that her work will not get any worse than it already is!"
"If Lady Eve and her brothers don’t stop now, then I don’t mind dealing with them in my own way."
Magistrate Axton nodded and agreed with what Yakov said to him. "If I were in your position, I would do the same; after all, it’s not just my life on the line but my family’s as well."
Yakov was glad that he had made his point clear and then stood up from the chair on which he was sitting. He narrowed his eyes and warned Magistrate Axton, "I am glad that you are understanding the situation better than I thought you would but this is not enough. Talk to your grandnephews and let them know that they are playing with fire. If they dare to do such a thing again, then I don’t mind dragging them with my family down, which includes you as well, Magistrate Axton."
"I understand, first consort," Magistrate Axton stood up and bowed.
Once the two men stepped out of the conference hall, Magistrate Axton heaved a sigh and sat down on the chair with his hand on his forehead. He looked truly troubled and agitated.
His aide looked at him carefully and asked, "Are you alright, my lord?"
"Do I look alright, Dean?" Magistrate Axton turned his head and questioned. "This is not a simple matter of children fighting, which I can solve by handing out candies. It’s a delicate matter and if those five do not stop when they still have the time, I am afraid that they would cause our entire clan to be annihilated."
He sighed and muttered, "I cannot understand what made them provoke the Empress? Are they taking her kindness as her weakness?"
Magistrate Axton shook his head in disbelief. "They seemed to have forgotten that the woman sitting on the throne is the same one who had once defeated three empires at once. I don’t understand what they are thinking."
"HAH!"
