Chapter 263: Not finding it amusing

"Why am I going with him?" Ahmar demanded and Yakov scowled at him as if he was the one who was the cause of his troubles. This arsehole. Did he not read the name on the letter that was written on the letter?

Bree raised her head and looked at the two men with a smile on her face, though she didn’t say anything; the two of them knew that she was not playing around. "Because I don’t know if either of you have forgotten about this but I am the empress. I have more work to do than to worry about my husbands’ old flares —"

"She is not my old flare, your majesty!" Yakov interrupted, feeling upset that he was still being held accountable for something that he had not done. Was it his fault that his father wanted to arrange his marriage with Evelyn? He didn’t even meet with her before!

Bree flicked a brow and remarked, "I don’t know about that but what I do know about is that if we do not deal with this matter, the five dramatic brothers of that woman would certainly come and cause trouble for me and I am not happy with that."

She raised her hand and pointed at the two men, "So you two go and deal with this matter for me. I don’t care how you do it, but you better do it before the new year ball."

The end of the year was coming and the officials, as well as the elders of the council, did not care that there was an obvious rise of crimes in the empire. No, what they cared about was that the empress smiled and held a ball like usual and told the commoners that everything was alright.

Everything was not alright but did anyone care about that? Bree didn’t think so.

She had a party to arrange as well as meet with Blaise and investigate more about the jackal shifters who tried to sneak inside the palace but failed due to the new magical boundaries that Blaise had set up, a boundary that would be useless if Semel was to come back to his full power.

Nonetheless, it helped, and Bree was grateful to that. But that didn’t mean that she could slack off; thus, this matter she couldn’t deal with it even if she wanted to.

"Now go," she waved the two men off. "The magistrate must be waiting for you; go and deal with him. Tell Magistrate Axton that he needs to deal with this matter before I decide that the five Ramsay brothers are not worthy of owning the positions that they have."

Ahmar felt his beast lurch forward; he was not happy. Of course he wasn’t. He didn’t like the fact that she had dismissed them and she had done it so easily. On top of that, it was for another man; yes, Yakov was also her mate but that didn’t change the fact that the man would always be the other one in their eyes.

His beast told him to charge ahead and teach Bree that she shouldn’t underestimate them like that. There was no way they could be ignored. However, Ahmar restrained his beast; he didn’t want to scare off Bree when she had hardly gotten close to him. So he could only grit his teeth and glare at Yakov, wishing that he could bite this man to death.

Who made him the first consort when he had such a messy relationship left uncleared?

"Let’s go, soldier." Even though Ahmar would have loved to throw this man out of the window, he still smiled at him politely and threw an arm around the stoic bastard, who stiffened under his touch, as if his touch dirtied him. Of course, being a half shifter, this was nothing new to Ahmar but the good thing was that he was able to get a small revenge on this man, which was worth the disdainful glance he cast his way!

The two men walked out of the office and Dion turned to look at Bree before asking, "Are you not afraid, your majesty? Sending the first and second consorts together, I am afraid they will burn the city down."

"Well," Bree chuckled as she raised her hand that was holding the quill before saying to Dion, "if the city was to burn down, I am sure that these five brothers would have something to do, other than threatening me with their foolish words?"

Dion: "..." Your majesty, the consorts are a bad influence on you.

On the other side, Ahmar and Yakov got into the carriage and arrived at the magistrate’s office, where Magistrate Axton was waiting for the two of them. As the two entered the building, a man rushed over and bowed in front of them, "First consort, second consort, it’s a pleasure to meet with you. The magistrate is waiting for you two in the conference hall; please follow me."

It was a good thing that Magistrate Axton was not being an arsehole by hiding, or else Ahmar was sure that Yakov would have really rampaged through the city. Not that he blamed him.

The situation was not pretty.

On one side was the daughter of a martyr whom they could not disrespect, while on the other side was his mate and the Empress.

Even with his eyes closed and his toes, Ahmar knew what and whom Yakov was going to choose, but the man was too obsessed with this idea of having a clean reputation. Ahmar was sure that he wasn’t liking any of it and was just an inch away from exploding.

"I am guessing that you are not really happy with what my grandchildren had done," Magistrate Axton remarked when he saw Yakov and Ahmar entering the conference room. The second his gaze met with Yakov, he smiled knowingly before turning to look at his aide and asking him to bring something to drink.

"Good day to you too, Magistrate Axton," Yakov greeted the man in a clipped voice. "And I am glad that you are liking this situation when I am about to claw your grandchildren’s hearts out of their chests."
