Chapter 262: Women troubles
"You have to be kidding me." Bree held her head and looked at the long letter that was submitted in the court by Lord Ramsay. She blinked her eyes and tried to make either head or tail of the letter that was lying in front of her but she couldn’t.
Instead she raised her head and looked at Yakov, whose face was just as stiff.
"Tell me, first consort. Did you have a marriage agreement with Lord Ramsay’s sister?" Bree couldn’t help but feel a tinge of annoyance; it was one thing that Cian had caused the woman trouble but she never—not even in her wildest dreams—thought that someone like Yakov would cause a problem similar to that.
He was too stiff for that.
Unfortunately, her hopes were doomed to dash as Yakov glanced down at the letter and gave her a nod.
"Ah, damn you—you bastard." Bree pushed away the letter out of sheer spite and anger.
"Your majesty, please mind your language." Dion spoke from the side of the room and Bree turned to look at him like a lioness glaring at him.
"Easy for you to say," she snapped angrily. "I haven’t even dealt with Princess Rosalie and now this. You might as well tell me to stop working as the empress and become a love guru or something. Am I supposed to handle the important matters of the court or shall I be worrying about these women and their families with whom my mates were entangled? I feel like a circus master and I have no damn monkey!"
She twisted in her chair and her gaze cut to Yakov, who lowered his head and she snorted, "Unless they count."
Yakov felt humiliated but he still couldn’t help but clear his stance, "It’s not like that, Your Majesty. Though I was engaged to Lady Eve, once the matter of you being my mate came to light, I broke the engagement, and it fell on my brother. The two of them were supposed to marry in March, but now that—"
"Now that your brother had run away, the engagement had once again become a problem," Bree summarised as she looked at the letter in front of her with a sigh. She didn’t know what the heck was going on, but suddenly her workload had increased and she could no longer deal with the matters of the court and the empire as swiftly as she used to and she had a very good guess who was behind it.
She rubbed her forehead and muttered, "This is going to be a big problem."
King Pierre, she could think of a way to handle him. But Evelyn was a problem. Her father was a martyr who had given up his life for the safety and protection of the empire, and she had five brothers who, though not holding important positions, were rather problematic.
She knew that this matter would not end anytime soon.
They won’t let her!
"What’s going to be a big problem?" Ahmar entered the room and questioned, his eyes cut to Yakov, who seemed to be staring at him as if he was about to strangle him to death. Realising that it was something fun, Ahmar immediately turned to look at Bree, his eyes shining with amusement and glee. "Did something happen?"
"Nothing," Yakov refused to admit that there was something wrong and that this problem had something to do with him.
Bree glanced up at him before turning to look at Ahmar and remarked, "There is indeed something wrong."
"Your majesty!"
"Oh, shut up." Bree rolled her eyes. She then turned to look at Ahmar before saying, "His ex-fiancée is causing trouble for the court and me. And with her three ferociously crazy brothers, who are demanding that I give them an explanation. They want their sister to marry into the Sceptre family as per the agreement between the two families. The only problem is that there is no unmarried man left unless the first consort divorces me and then takes that woman as his mate."
"I will never do that!" Yakov snapped, feeling insulted that she even thought for a second that he would do such a thing to her. Even if she didn’t believe it, Bree’s existence meant more to him than just being his mate. She was the one thing that held him down and anchored him.
She didn’t even mind the fact that he was more involved in the court than he was in the harem and would let him do what he wanted without telling him that he needed to stop being more of a chancellor and act more like her consort.
This was why he was sure that he didn’t and couldn’t get entangled with another woman.
Bree simply raised her head and snorted before looking away. The mouth of a man, she knew it better than to not trust it.
Ahmar was rather amused with the situation and thus turned to look at the man next to him before questioning, "What are you going to do now? Are you going to confront this Eve woman?"
"No," Yakov glanced at him as if he was stupid and stated, "That’s what they want me to do. Do you think I am stupid enough to play right into their trap?" He then turned to look at Bree before saying to her, "I believe we should meet with Elder Axton. He is the one who is in control of the city as the magistrate as well as the Ramsay family; we might as well discuss this matter with him. As he is the maternal grandfather of those six siblings, I believe that he needs to control their antics with their father gone."
"Do you think that I don’t have enough meetings piled up?" Bree questioned as she pointed to the bunch of papers sitting at the corner of her table; she then glanced at the two men and stated, "You two go with Blaise and Dion and deal with this trouble."
"What? Me with him!?"
"Why are you sending me to this job? I didn’t do anything!"
