Chapter 257: Incoming Trouble

"More than half of them failed?" Bree raised her head and looked at Dion. Truth be told, she wasn’t even surprised that more than half of the ministers failed in the preliminary exams. With the help of Blaise, she had created an anti-cheating exam paper in hopes that everything would go well.

It didn’t.

It was enough that they tried to cheat but half of the officials were not even prepared for the exams and the other half maintained that she had created the paper out of thin air and it didn’t make any sense.

It wasn’t until a few candidates mentioned that the paper was indeed easier if they had just opened the books that they stopped.

"Yes," Dion was speechless when he looked at the results; he knew that the officials of the empire were not as witty and wise when it came to the history of the nation but he never thought that they didn’t even read the laws. The higher the rank of the official, the lower the score.

No wonder their empire has been rotting away like this; the reins were in the hands of idiots like these.

Bree clicked her tongue as she took a glance at the list of the failed officials and said, "Let their titles be revoked. They will not be receiving their family seal; tell them that the greatest mercy at this point is that I am letting them keep the wealth they have amassed throughout these years when they have done the bare minimum."

She shook her head and muttered, "What a sin. They really don’t know when to stop, do they? To think that so many of these officials haven’t read till the fifteenth page of the book of our history."

She thought that with such an easy paper, these officials would understand that Bree never meant to take hold of their titles and genuinely just wanted to help the empire get rid of the rotten weeds.

However, what she never expected was that these fools would be so deep down in trouble and greed that they don’t even know the simplest things. It was an embarrassment to the empire. The one who spoke so highly about serving the throne, they didn’t even know the smallest thing about the empire; who were they going to serve with that attitude?

"And," Dion began, causing Bree to raise her head and look at him with a frown on her face. "What’s the matter?"

"Its Lord Pierre," Dion placed down a letter that the king of a small fief had sent to their empire and relayed the matter to Bree, "It seems like there was something going on between the princess of the Remnant nation and the fourth consort. The king has asked for a meeting between you and him as well as the fourth consort."

Bree felt her brows twitch. She knew and had read that Cian was the kind of man who liked and craved the attention of women. It was because his family had never taken him seriously or given him the identity of more than just a prince in name.

If he was more than that, Cian would have never been sent to her empire as a war trophy. Since he was brought here, it could be seen what his position in his nation was.

Thus, he used the attention of the women who found him attracted for the lack of respect that he received.

If only Omar and his brothers knew that Cian was the leader of the biggest assassin guild, thought Bree.

That man had more substance than he showed but he just kept it hidden because Cian knew that no one would take him seriously.

Bree sighed; she didn’t blame him because Cian was also a victim of the social stigma that sirens were good at nothing but seduction.

"Call the fourth consort."

"Your majesty."

It took less than fifteen minutes for Cian to arrive at the office. His lips were curved in a knowing smile as if he knew why Bree had called him here.

And when Bree raised her head and looked up at her fourth consort, who was dressed like a peacock, she blinked her eyes and stated in a calm voice, "No, you are wrong."

"What?"

"You have the wrong idea," Bree picked up the letter that Dion had handed to her and then leaned back down on the chair with her arms crossed. She said to Cian, "This letter came this morning. What did you do, this time around, fourth consort?"

Cian frowned as he picked up the letter and read through the content. His eyes widened slightly as he set the letter down and confessed, "I think there was a misunderstanding, your majesty. I have indeed been with the princess of the Remnant Empire but I have never done anything that would cross the line."

"As for why it did," he frowned while biting his lower lip. "It was because the Bellion and Remnant empires were talking about an alliance and King Pierre requested I keep his daughter company."

"Your brother agreed?" Bree asked and from the look on Cian’s face, Bree knew that Omar did agree. She curved her lips slightly in a disgruntled manner. She knew that Omar was not fit to be a king. Though he pretended to be wise, the truth was that his arrogance was what did the talking.

He believed that he was better than the rest but Bree knew better.

Omar was not as skilled and his lack of skills showed up when he was facing a problem.

She sighed and then said, "Since the king has sent a formal request, I am afraid that we cannot ignore his request. You will have to be with me during the meeting."

But the fact that the king had arranged this meeting because of his daughter, Bree had a feeling that it was not going to end well. After all, she had once read a small paragraph in the book that said —none of the women who were involved with Cian Testa were sane.
