Chapter 256: Don’t Force Yourself
Though his elder brother had advised him to be respectful of his position, Cian knew that there was something wrong back at home. If not, then his brother wouldn’t have hurried down just to warn him.
His elder brother had always been confident of reigning over the sea without any worries but Orman suddenly came to the palace and asked him to have a child with Bree. If Bellion was not in major trouble, then Cian was certain that his brother would have never asked him to give birth to a child.
Arrogant as he was, Orman would never rely on a child unless the situation was getting worse than he had thought.
"You mean to say that there is trouble at sea?" Bree asked with a furrow of her brows.
Cian hated the fact that Bree was more interested in talking about the political situation of the Bellion Empire when he was sitting right next to her and trying his best to seduce her.
Oh, he knew that she was attracted to him. It was quite easy to see, with how her eyes darkened but for some reason, Bree preferred not acting according to her desires. He could see that this was not her way of acting hard to get or playing coy with him. Because he had seduced enough women before coming to the palace to notice such plays.
It seemed like Bree was rather picky about whom she got close to, and apparently he was not good enough to fit that bill. And screw him if that didn’t hurt his ego. How could it not? When he was literally serving himself on a platter and yet his mate was picky enough to even glance at him.
But at the same time, the siren within him was willing to take on the challenge. How dare this woman turn her attention somewhere else when he was right in front of her?
Cian suppressed the urge to reach out and touch those inky curls and said to Bree, "My elder brother came to me and ahem—discussed a few means to stabilise the situation of the Bellion Empire."
Though he didn’t say it out loud, Bree knew what he meant.
Her eyes flickered and she poked him for further information, "Is the situation of the Bellion Empire that problematic?"
"Hmm, I think," Cian agreed with a solemn frown. "My brother was going on about how the mermen have been attacking the borders of the empire. The last time something like this happened was when Semel was still alive. Back then our empire didn’t agree to join him and the rest of the mermen, who believed that what he was doing was indeed correct, attacked Bellion every now and then."
He glanced at her and added, "The fact that they are once again making moves at the empire despite knowing that the Bellion empire is under you, I think they do not take you seriously, your majesty."
She turned her eyes up and stated coldly, "You don’t need to tell me."
With how things were going, she already knew that there was something wrong. Bree raised her hand and placed it on her chin, she silently pondered over the information when she felt her shoulder sink down a little.
Startled, she turned to look at the man who had laid his head down on her shoulder.
Ignoring how vulnerable and beautiful he looked, she questioned, "What are you doing? If you are sleepy, then you should go back to your bedchamber."
The man didn’t even move; instead he upturned his eyes and met her gaze before saying to her, "Your majesty, it seems like you are having a hard time. Why not let me take a look? I promise that as long as you bring me along, you will feel better."
Bree understood what he was trying to say. She frowned, "No."
"What’s wrong? Are you scared?"
Oh, this man was trouble, thought Bree. She knew that Cian was a siren but she never thought he was this determined when he was seducing someone. He was stirring the sleepy dragon within her, which was something, as Saphira never stirred in such a way.
Not only because Saphira found this man charming but also because the she-dragon could detect that there was something more to this man than he was letting on.
Yup, something told her that Cian was not here to seduce her because he wanted to do it but because he had to do it. There was a difference. Because this man was not as shallow and flirty as he was making it out to be.
When he leaned in further close to her personal space, Bree got to her feet. She turned to look at the man who seemed surprised as if he did not expect her to refuse his charm even when he was trying his best. "I will be seeing you later, fourth consort."
Cian, who hadn’t expected Bree to refuse him even when he was giving it all, scrambled to his feet. He asked, "Are you sure that you really don’t want me to follow you? I promise that you will not be wasting too much of your time. Just a few hours. Eight—ten if you really want to wind down?"
Bree rolled her eyes as she walked away. "You don’t have to do this, fourth consort. There is no need for you to force yourself."
"Force?" Cian echoed. "Why do you say that I am forcing myself?" Cian was pretty sure that he had not made a mistake. So why did this woman say that he was forcing himself?
"Because I can see that you really don’t want to sleep with me," Bree turned to look at Cian. Though he had been unravelling his charm on her, his eyes were quite empty other than the lust that was surging in his eyes. Maybe he did want to sleep with her but that was just for the sake of it, as if he didn’t wish to be left behind.
He was not ready for it but was still pushing himself.
She raised her hand and patted him on the shoulder before saying, "I can see that you are a bit uncomfortable, so why don’t we take it slowly? It’s not like you need to sleep with me to spend time with me. I heard that you can drink really well; maybe we can drink together sometimes?"
"If you want to spend time with me, it doesn’t have to be in bed, right?"
