Chapter 258: Cian knows the princess?
Bree turned her head and looked at the hovering clock in the air that was floating on one side before floating to the other side of the room. It had been three hours since she arrived at the fief with Cian but she had yet to see the head or toe of King Pierre.
She turned to look at the guards who were keeping an eye on her and Cian before smiling at them as she remarked, "Does the King have any other properties on the fief? Bigger than this one?"
Her question left the two guards in confusion as they shook their heads while the one on the right questioned, "Why are you asking this, your majesty?"
"No, I mean since your dear king has the audacity to make the Empress wait for so long...I thought that he might have some other properties. If not, how can it be possible for him to not worry about this one getting burnt down to rubble?"
Though she didn’t say anything too explicitly, the guards understood her threat, and one of them ran out of the hall where the Empress and the consort were sitting.
Seeing him run, Bree snorted before taking hold of the cup and sipping the famous ’coffee’ that was sold at the fief. Her brows furrowed when she tasted the bitter water and set down the cup on the coaster. It was disgusting; the reason she came to this fief was especially because of this thing called coffee.
When she heard that King Pierre’s land had coffee beans, she was quite curious, as there was no corporate slave who could make do without coffee. So the temptation of caffeine, along with the desire to make a round around the fief, made her leave the warmth of the palace.
And now Bree was regretting it; if she had known, she would have asked this damned man to come to the Empire instead of taking the trouble of coming here.
"You should have left this man to his devices, your majesty," Yakov remarked as he glanced at Cian. He had stepped out of the hall because he wanted to see what exactly the king was doing and from the information he collected, it seemed like King Pierre had an audacious demand that he wanted to put forth in front of the empress, which was why he was trying to see where Bree’s bottom line truly was.
"What’s that supposed to mean?" Cian asked as his fists clenched and he glared at the man who was looking at him as if he was so much above him. Does this man even know that he could kill him if that was what he wanted?
For that contemptuous and condescending gaze, he might as well sleep with one eye open.
Yakov sneered as he remarked, "What else? You are of no help to her majesty and yet she has to travel for so many hours for the trouble that you have caused. Do you think we don’t have enough trouble on our hands with you added to the mix?"
Cian pursed his lips angrily; he wanted to say something but he dared not say anything because Yakov was right. With the signs of Semel coming back to life, the dark mages had turned even more active, and the news of someone dying had become common.
Every now and then a low-ranking official would go missing only to be found dead in a few days.
Though Bree didn’t tell him, he knew that she was worried.
"Alright, calm down, first consort," Bree sighed as she turned to look at Yakov, who was still angry at the fact that Cian had caused trouble right under his nose. "I know that you are upset with the fourth consort but there is no point in getting angry now that we are here, right?"
Yakov pursed his lips and didn’t quibble with Bree but she could see that he just turned quiet because he did not wish to quarrel with her.
But as long as he was willing to stay quiet, she was not going to bother with him.
Soon the doors of the hall opened and King Pierre stepped inside. He was a tall man with salt-and-pepper-like hair; his eyes were slightly sharp and from the brittle looks the guards and the other servants were throwing his way, Bree could tell that this was the kind of man who complained and nitpicked a lot.
"I apologise for the delay, your majesty." King Pierre sat down on the couch. Even though he was apologising, Bree had a feeling that he didn’t feel sorry at all.
"If you are going to apologise, then here is some advice, King Pierre," Bree smiled as she released her alpha vibes. "Don’t do it. This time around I was in a better mood, which was why your palace is still intact. The next time you dare to make me wait, I will burn down this entire fief for you to see. Do you dare to bet?"
King Pierre’s lips thinned as he looked at Bree. He thought that as she was young and a woman, he could have suppressed her but right now as he looked at her, King Pierre had a flight-or-fight adrenaline rush head straight to his head.
He lowered his head and apologised again, this time much more politely, as he said to Bree, "I am sorry, your majesty. There was a little trouble with my daughter that I had to see through."
He then turned to look at Cian and remarked, "I believe the fourth consort knows about it."
Bree and Yakov turned to look at Cian, who started sweating because when he was asked to accompany that woman, he did not even pay attention to her name and just kept hemming and hawing whenever he felt like it.
He turned his head to look at Bree, who was staring at him with a questioning gaze and shook his head frantically. "I have no idea. I didn’t even stay with her for that long."
Bree stared at him for two seconds more before turning her head and looking at King Pierre, "Well, it seems like my husband doesn’t remember anything, King Pierre. So why don’t you throw some light on the matter?"
