Chapter 177: No escape from hell
" Father, was it all right for you to leave like that?" A woman with a heart-shaped face stared out of the window in worry. She couldn’t help but fear the consequences of almost running over someone, she turned to look at her father, who sat at the corner of the carriage dressed in a pompous manner screaming that he had money and even more money.
" What do you know Estelle?" Baron Cleveland studied his daughter in distaste. " Commoners like them are wandering around the streets without knowing their own place, you shouldn’t be worried about them at all, instead you should be worried about what you are supposed to be doing, you hear me?"
Estelle lowered her head and clenched her fingers in her lap, she wanted to fight back, to say no but she had no other choice but to agree with her father. Like her father told her long ago, the only reason she was alive was for the lord to return if not he would have killed her in the cradle.
And now——
" For the lord to summon me out of nowhere, this is a great thing... something to take pride in," he turned his head to his daughter with eyes lit up like little stars. " You don’t know how long it has been, years! Years of living in this abomination... not allowed to hunt elves nor are we allowed to feast on the blood of the phoenixes." He rubbed his fangs and slapped his thighs in indignation. "Aren’t we vampires? The strongest of the predators? Why should we drink something as distasteful as that ambrosia? Blood of elves and phoenix that’s what we deserved and yet the Dragon Queen wanted us to leave a life like this? I do not agree to this!"
Estelle listened to her father’s chatter and pursed her lips, she really didn’t understand why her father has to stir up the pot when they were living peacefully. Even if the Queen didn’t allow the illegal hunts anymore and asked the vampires to spare the living, there was nothing wrong with that but that wasn’t what her father believed.
He along with that scary man has been working hard to revive the lord going as far as preparing another shell for him to live on to like a leech.
" You make sure that you make me proud later on, you hear me?" Her father added with a sharp glint in his eyes. " Make sure to serve the lord well."
" Yes, father." Estelle looked out of the carriage window, if not for her sick brother asking her to do whatever their father asked her to do, she wouldn’t have agreed. Her brother was still waiting for the medicine, though selfishly after throwing his sister into the den of blood-sucking foxes.
Their carriage drove to the distant land where the temple of Mavis stood tall shining under the blue sky with the sun shining over those tall turrets. Pure white without a single stain resembling the purity and chastity that Mavis withheld till the very end.
" Blasphemy," grunted Baron Cleveland. " What’s the point of having a goddess, a woman still wet behind her ears ruining the empire? Surely, if it was a man this empire would have prospered much better."
Estelle thought that this was hypocrisy at its best, wasn’t her father depending on her powers to rescue the lord? Wasn’t she a woman as well?
She turned her head to look at the temple and closed her eyes sending a quick prayer to the Goddess. She knew that someone like her was ought to be ignored by the Goddess but she still hoped that the goddess would at least show her a little sympathy.
’ Please let me live.’
All she wanted was to stay alive.
" You are here?" A voice echoed in the dark chamber, Estelle could feel the energy —— Dark and serpentine just like the insignia of her family. It drummed at every corner and inch of the room causing her heart to thump against her chest, she didn’t even get a chance to fully understand the situation, when her father brushed past her and kneeled in front of something or maybe someone.
" My lord... My lord, you are fin..finally back..." Baron Cleveland choked on his sobs as he dropped his head to the floor and rubbed his forehead on the hard floor. Estelle watched her father, the proud and haughty baron bow his head in surprise before the magical voice echoed in the hall again this time a light chuckle brimming under the dark notes. " It has been a long time my dear baron, how many years it has been seven or eight? Ah, I have been locked on that blasted island for so long that I can’t even remember when I was executed. What a pity, a thrilling incident such as that is something that I should have remembered."
"My lord ... it has been six years ... and of course, you don’t even have to mention that god-forbidden incident of your death, I assure you ever since you left —- This Empire have fallen to ruins!" Baron Cleveland shook his head in disappointment.
" Of course it has, my sister had a soft heart for those who were weak maybe something to do with her mother succumbing to an early death," answered the voice again from the dark, this time its tone was a lot sharper. Sister —— Estelle knew about whom the voice was talking about. The one and only Dragon Queen the wise ruler of the Dragonire, from unifying the continent to ruling the entire island with an iron fist.
For her to be called soft-hearted——
" Ah looks like your daughter doesn’t agree with me, Baron." The voice tittered causing Estelle’s heart to jump in her throat as she raised her head and met with the bloodthirsty gaze she has ever seen in her life, terrified she took a step back but knocked into a muscular wall. Jerkily, she turned her head and looked at the man with long red hair with streaks of white, eyes filled with crookedness and a smile that of a grim reaper.
" What are you doing sweetie? There is no escape from hell."
