Chapter 176: A royal carriage
Yakov finished his food or more like swallowed it down on the other hand Bree had a great time finishing her meal. She wiped her lips feeling rejuvenated more than ever now that she didn’t have to care about the many etiquettes that she has to take care of when she was in the palace. Every time she so much as put a fork out of line, her head maid would give her a scolding moving ear to ear making sure that she got the importance of the troublesome headache.
’ You are the Queen of the Dragonire, people look up to you if you do not follow the rules that have been long handed down by your ancestors then who will?’
Even though the head maid wasn’t here Bree could still hear her nagging in her ears, with a sigh she rubbed her tummy. Fortunately, she wasn’t wearing a corset that crushed her rib cage to the point it resembled nothing but every bit of those ’unhealthy beauty’ standards, she used to hate. As a child, her mother often restricted her diet saying that boys like skinny women and she, as a woman should take care of herself more.
For years Bree thought the same but as she grew up, she realised that boys indeed liked skinny girls but real men liked whom they felt attached to, a true man—— she never found one for herself.
" I wish I could take him to the palace as my chef." Bree brushed her hair out of her eyes when the wind roared past the sea and messed it up for her. " But I wouldn’t want that for anyone else, the palace is really stuffy."
" You don’t like living in the palace, your majesty?" Yakov reached his hands and untangled the locks of Bree’s hair with his slender fingers upon seeing her struggle with it. He tucked them behind her ear but the breeze rustled past them again and the raven locks once again covered Bree’s face like an inky veil.
Yakov sighed. " Please wait here, your majesty."
He helped Bree back on the chair and then rushed to the stall selling headbands and scrunchies but compared to the chic hair bands that Bree usually wore, these were a lot more childish. Yakov’s expression turned awkward—— maybe he should have asked Aileen to bring some clothes and hair accessories for Bree.
"What do you want to buy young man? Are you looking for something for your daughter or lover?" The elderly woman sitting inside the stall beamed, the many wrinkles on her face crinkled as she pointed to the pink hair band and said, " These are pretty popular with the young girls but of course, if you are looking for something for your beloved then I will recommend this." She pointed to a thin strap of a green band with a big red rose sitting at the corner of the band. " A red rose to show off your affection what else could your beloved want?"
Something that wasn’t this childish, Yakov thought, Bree was used to the finest hair accessories and if only they would have been able to find the trunks that held her belongings then —— Yakov let out another frustrated sigh but still picked the one that was popular with the young ladies. Though it was severely in contrast with what he had in mind, Yakov knew that he wouldn’t be able to find anything in this small town.
He fished out a silver coin and handed it to the elderly woman, seeing the fine silver the woman gasped before croaking, " I don’t have the change for this, she was just a small seller and her works weren’t that pretty at most they could be sold off for a few copper coins."
Yakov tucked his pouch back in his pocket, his gaze falling on the two kids playing with dolls made of mismatched parts and calmly said, " Take it go back home and feed these children some nice things." They looked a bit too skinny for their age.
"Oh, thank you my lord... but I can’t take this money in exchange for nothing please wait I will pack some things for you." Yakov wanted to say that there was no need but the elderly woman was already bustling around her small stall and by the time she stopped, she handed him a big bag with all sorts of accessories for his ’lover’.
Fortunately, the past Brianna Dragonire was no longer here or else he would have been charred to death. She hated cute things with such a passion that he would have a better chance at survival than a mad troll on a crackpot with a burning club in his hands.
" Did you loot the entire stall?" asked Bree as she let Yakov put the rose headband on her head. Though the wind still rustled her hair at least the bangs didn’t fall back on her forehead again covering her vision.
Yakov straightened up and hooked his fingers around her arm gently moving her to one side. A moment later a carriage drove past where Bree has been standing with giant golden markings on the doors of the carriage, she could see that it belonged to a noble but what was a noble doing here?
" They must have come here for the blessing of Mavis," Yakov answered her unasked question. " Many nobles do not wish to let go of the comforts nor do they enter the temple because it means that they have to abandon everything behind until they finish the training of becoming the priest but they do enter the temple when it is open for the public during the Festival."
Bree nodded as she turned her gaze away from the carriage riding away. " Should have known, a carriage to drive past after almost knocking into someone without so much as an apology could only belong to a noble with a narrow heart."
She tilted her chin to look at Yakov seemingly wanting to see the distaste in his gaze upon her rough conclusion of the noble but surprisingly he didn’t say anything. Just hummed along and then pointed to an ice cream stall, "Let’s get you a tornado twister shall we?"
