Chapter 161: Black magic
Chapter 161: Black magic
" But then?" Before Yakov could say any more admonishing words to Cassidy, Bree lazily raised her head and looked at the maid who was kneeling in front of her. Her gaze was light and she didn’t look like she was threatening anyone ever so slightly but Cassius who caught her gaze shivered like a scared rabbit, this woman why was she so scary? Just look at those eyes, it looked as if she was going to eat him up in one gobble bite if he was to say one wrong thing!
Cassius somehow summoned his courage to open his mouth and say what he had in mind but no sooner had he parted his lips, Yakov turned to look at Bree and vociferously spoke, " Your majesty, you can’t be listening to this nonsense! What kind of explanation is it even, I say that we need to take care of this maid lest others think that you are easy to attack!"
Given that she chopped a huge mountain golem with just one move it was impossible for anyone to think that she was easy to attack.
Cassius looked at Yakov in shock and disbelief maybe his gaze was a bit too strong because a second later Yakov turned to look at him with an expression that caused chills to roll up his spine. " What is it? Is there something that you want to say?"
He was on the verge of shaking his head but then paused in between and immediately stopped himself from saying anything unnecessary.
Bree shot a gaze at the maid with her head lowered and an aggrieved expression on her face, the little maid looked like she has been wronged till the end of the world. Her lips unconsciously curled up as she looked at Cassidy and tapped her fingers on the armrest of her chair, " I know that giving out a necessary punishment is important but at the same time, we cannot punish an innocent either, if there is something that we do not know about, I wish to know about it lest others think that we provided judgement in a hurry."
Yakov looked disgruntled and why would he not? His alpha vibes were totally against letting this woman live, to him and his wolf Ashlyn was an unidentified danger and if she had succeeded then there would have been no counter plan for him to take care of the situation, so how can he not be upset?
But before Bree’s mate, he was also the chancellor of this Empire, he had to listen to everything even if his wolf away egging him to snap the woman’s neck in half. " I understand your majesty."
With a reluctant expression, he took a step back giving Cassius a chance to breathe with ease. No wonder his mother said that the people of the Dragonire Empire were scary and ruthless even if Yakov suppressed his murderous aura, Cassius was able to catch up to it with ease. After all, he has felt this same aura coming from his brothers and stepmother every time they met, whether it was a small family dinner or banquet, he could feel their gazes that hoped to see him die every time.
After living in such an environment for so long, it would be hard to not catch onto a murderous aura that was directed at him!
He knew that as an alpha male Yakov wanted nothing more than to kill the woman who tried to put his mate in danger but he knew Ashlyn and understood her as well. She would never do something like attacking her Queen and that too so blatantly where she will be caught!
She wasn’t that much of a bumbling idiot!
" But then she suddenly stiffened as if she was going into a seizure and then——" he prodded into Ashlyn’s arm, if she wanted to survive then she has to tell what happened to her on her own, he could only help her this much. The truth coming from his mouth would look like it was nothing but an excuse but the same cannot be said for Ashlyn, she was the one who felt it, so it was better for her to summon the courage and say it outright!
He reached his hand to clasp Ashlyn’s and heard the latter suck in a breath before raising her head and looking at the Dragon Queen.
"Your majesty, this may sound unbelievable to you but during the funeral, I felt someone’s presence behind him, I thought that it was one of the maids and did not pay attention to it, however as the funeral proceeded I felt a chill crawl up my spine and suddenly my mind got heavier and heavier, I couldn’t even see what was going on in front of me, I thought that it was because I wasn’t in a good condition and that was why I was feeling like this but your majesty, a before fainting I smelled black roses, with notes of leather and smoke ...Along with blood, your majesty." With her fingers clenched Ashlyn looked at Bree and gritted out the last words. " Before my sense of reasoning distorted I heard someone say—— Kill her, after that, I don’t know what happened."
She might have as well thrown a bomb at them because no sooner than her words fell, everyone’s head turned to look at Bree and why wouldn’t they, everyone in here knew that this scent belonged to none other than Simel! the silence stretched further and further until Yakov shook his head and said, " Impossible! How can that man get so close to the procession? Are you making a joke of our security measures?"
" I don’t dare to do such a thing, first consort," Ashlyn bowed her head at once as she cried out. " I knew that my explanation sounds weird and no one would be willing to believe me but I swear on the name of Goddess Mavis, I really smelled that scent, if not I am willing to take the oath of blood in front of the priests, please, believe me, I really did not attack her majesty. Someone made me attack her!"
