Chapter 162: Enraged
" Do you even know what you are saying?" asked Bree finally after a very long silence. " If it’s proven that you are lying then I am afraid that the matter won’t end in just you getting punished, you and your family can be executed on the grounds of trying to spread untrue rumours, are you prepared for it?"
" I ..." Ashlyn hesitated after listening to Bree’s words, if it was just her then she would have taken the risk but if even her family was being tangled in this mess then—-
Just as she was thinking about whether she should just take her words back, a hand squeezed hers causing her to once again raise her head. No, she was Ron’s mate, as a mate of a brave knight, she cannot do something as cowardly as retreating just because she was scared of losing her life. If she does something as cowardly as this then what was she going to say to Ron when she sees him again?
" I am prepared for it, your majesty," with determination shining in her eyes Ashlyn looked at Bree. " I am willing to be investigated, if it’s found that I lied about being harmed by a Dark mage then I will take whatever punishment that her majesty deems fit."
Bree didn’t say anything, she simply tapped her finger on the armrest with her head leaning against the other hand. The longer she stayed silent the more anxious Ashlyn and the others became... will the Queen really kill Ashlyn to quell the rumours once and for all? What Ashlyn said just now wasn’t simple if the Dark forces were making a comeback then there was a chance that the trouble from the past might start again.
" Your majesty, if you are having trouble believing Miss Ashlyn then I am willing to vouch for her," when the knights inside thought that the situation was going to reach a stalemate, Darren stepped forward with a hand over his heart as he solemnly looked at Bree. " If what she said is proven wrong in the investigation, then I am willing to dire together with her."
Darren had no family and was more or less abandoned at the side of a street, it could be said that he more or less grew spent most of his life in the orphanage before becoming a knight in the royal family. To him the knights were like his little brothers whom he has to protect and take care of and now that Ron was gone, it was his responsibility to look after his mate and ensure that she remained safe and sound.
" You are willing to vouch for her?" Bree asked as she raised her head to look at Darren even though her gaze was calm without any flicker in it, Darren felt like he was going to lose a few years of his life. But for the sake of his dead brother in arm, he stiffly nodded his head before loudly repeating what he just said, " I am willing, your majesty. I will vouch for Miss Ashlyn with my life."
" Very well then," Bree stood up from her chair and with a calm glance looked at Ashlyn and Cassidy along with Darren. " If you are willing to vouch for Miss Ashlyn then I have no reason to refuse to listen to her either, I will let her go for now but if the investigation proves that she was in the wrong then I hope that you three will be prepared for the punishment."
" We understand your majesty," after exchanging a glance with each other both Cassidy and Darren agreed with what Bree said, seeing that neither of them had anything to say anymore, Bree strode out of the tent leaving behind Yakov who took a glance at Darren and said, " I would like to hear an explanation from General Ahmar about this, Sir Darren."
A knight vouching for a maid who attacked the Queen was enough of a reason for Yakov to fire both Darren and Ahmar from their positions.
" I understand, first consort," Darren bowed his head, no longer being able to look Yakov in the eye.
The sound of knives and spoon clattering filled the entire camp, some of the knights were even having a good time making jokes and telling their stories to one another but Bree’s table was shrouded in gloomy silence. She raised her head and looked at Yakov who was calmly sipping on his stew and finally couldn’t take it anymore as she said, " What’s the matter? Are you angry?"
" I dare not get angry with you, your majesty," answered Yakov though he didn’t say anything harsh nor did he try to taunt her ever so subtly, Bree could feel the anger that was carefully wrapped in his voice.
He wasn’t angry, he was simply enraged to the point of no return.
She wanted to ignore him but knowing his personality she was half certain that he might go after Ashlyn, so she could only run her fingers through her hair as she sighed, " I haven’t done anything wrong, Ashlyn might not have any evidence to back her claims but did have the support of the people who trust her if I randomly punish her when she has already mentioned dark magic to be involved, I don’t think killing her was a wise decision."
" I know and I also know that what you did was exceptionally wise your majesty," said Yakov through gritted teeth, causing Bree to look down at the spoon he was holding, though he said that he understood what she said—- the disfiguring of the spoon told her another story.
" I see, it’s great that you don’t think I made a wrong decision," whatever she will just ignore everything and keep having her meal. There was no need for her to see this cruelty.
Just look at that morbid shape of the spoon!
" That’s right, her majesty is wise surely she will never make a wrong decision," Yakov conceded before snapping the spoon in his hand in half. " I am very glad to have such a wise Queen."
