Chapter 160: Why did you do it?

Silence fell inside the tent, and Bree didn’t say anything. Though she was kind, her first motive was to stay alive, having died in her first life just because she was kind enough not to cut off the little stalkers’ of her stalkers led her to be killed in such a pathetic manner. So, even if she felt a bit sorry for Ashlyn, there was no way she would do something as stupid as letting go of the woman who tried to harm her without any rhyme or reason.

She was indeed kind but her kindness came with a bottom limit and that was her life. As long as her life was threatened she would try her best to end the trouble as soon as she can, which was why she did stop Yakov from interrogating Ashlyn.

" I ... that I ..." Ashlyn didn’t say anything for a long time it was as if she was thinking about something really carefully but Yakov’s interrogation skills weren’t far off from Ahmar’s. He unleashed a bit of his alpha vibes and directed them all at Ashlyn causing her to wince and shudder, Bree watched as her fingers clenched and unclenched under Yakov’s aura but she didn’t say anything at all.

Maybe she should leave this matter in the hands of Yakov, after all, she didn’t know how she was supposed to interrogate anyone.

" I am asking you why did you do it, was it really the overstimulation or were you egged by someone, if so who was the one who ordered you? And if you did it then are you willing to give the names of those who were behind this assassination attempt?"

Yakov fired one question after another, it was as if he was not even the slightest bit concerned about the answers, he just wanted Ashlyn to confess to her crime and be done with the interrogation once and for all.

" First consort... I plead——"

"First consort! Would you mind listening to my testimony?" Before Ashlyn could say anything the flap of the tent was pushed open and a familiar maid with blonde hair and sea blue eyes strode inside with a knight. Her hands were clenched on the sides as she looked at Yakov as if she was looking at a man-eating demon.

Bree decided that she liked Cassidy then and there.

" You..what are you doing here?" Yakov frowned as he looked at the knight who brought Cassidy with him. " Didn’t I say that no one is allowed to come inside while I am questioning this maid?"

" This maid said that she knew what happened back then, that’s why I allowed to let her come in and say a few words," replied the Knight with a swift bow. " I apologise for not asking for permission, your highness but this matter is concerned with someone’s life, I could not ignore it. Please do forgive me!"

The knight bowed apologetically but Yakov seemed anything but forgiving at the moment, he stared at the maid who has interrupted the proceedings but he still pursed his lips and said, " Very well, what is it that you wanted?"

A wise ruler can never be swayed by his emotions when an innocent life was at concern, so even if Yakov thought that whatever the maid was going to say would simply be a waste of time given that the evidence was right in front of them but there was nothing else he could do.

" Thanking the first consort for his grace," Cassius bowed in front of Yakov, though he could feel the killing intent that was filled in those apathetic amber eyes, he knew that if he was to say anything upsetting at this point, he will surely be executed together with Ashlyn but he just couldn’t let this kind little maid die!

She was the only one who was caring enough to bring him medicines when he was sick and she even used to take care of him when he got in trouble because of his short temper in his early days. At first, he hoped that the Empress would listen to what Ashlyn had to say but after he listened to the maids who were going on and on about the tyranny of the Dragon Queen, Cassius couldn’t stay put anymore.

With how the Queen was forgetting about listening to Ashlyn she might as well turn her into mince meat before Ashlyn could say anything and what was more Ashlyn was so terrified of the royalty that she might as well faint at the sight of the Dragon Queen and the first consort before even answering their questions.

So, for the sake of his only friend, he had to step into this mess even if he wanted nothing more than just to lay low and do nothing but have a leisurely life in the palace until that woman stops looking for him.

Cassius raised his head and looked at Bree, he wanted to perceive just what kind of mood she was in but as soon as he raised his head, his gaze fell on the dark golden eyes that always glimmered under the darkness and felt his heart jump.

Not because Bree looked really pretty but because she looked really scary, he felt like he was some sort of puny rabbit in front of her.

" I was with Ashlyn back then, I swear she wasn’t even in the condition to attack her majesty." Though Cassius was scared, he had to say what he needed to say for the sake of protecting Ashlyn’s life. " I was there with her throughout the entire time, she was indeed a complete mess but she didn’t look like she wanted to attack her majesty but then——"

" No one who wants to attempt assassination would do something as letting others know what’s going on in their head," said Yakov with a sharp glint in his eyes. If this was any other case then he would have willingly listened to whatever the maid had to say but this was about a maid attacking his mate! Even if he was to shred this woman to bits, it wouldn’t be enough to quell his anger!
