Chapter 159: Interrogation
" You are awake," this was the first thing that Bree said to the maid when she regained her consciousness. After the short funeral, she and Yakov returned to the camp where they headed straight to the knights’ tents, though Bree didn’t want to take issue with an overly sensitive maid who just lost her mate, there was nothing else that she could do about it. She had to make an example out of the maid or else others would think that she was an easy target.
Especially the man standing behind her, she turned to look at Yakov who calmly stood next to her chair as if he was one of the most loyal subjects of her but Bree knew that the man was a black belly tyrant, if she gave him a chance, he wouldn’t think twice before pouncing at her like a little fox.
Yakov: "...." I do want to pounce on you, your majesty but my pounce is different than the fox.
The maid with red hair and green eyes was called Ashlyn at least that was what the other maids called her, when they were called to be interrogated all of them said only one thing and that was —— Ashlyn could never do something like that.
In their opinion, she was kind and generous and even though she loved Ron to the point where she was willing to lose her life for him, she would never do something like attacking her and disrupting the funeral of her beloved. To them, Ashlyn was a woman who has been working in the Royal palace for more than ten years and she always thought with a rational mind no matter what the situation.
So, her losing her mind and attacking her thoughtlessly was something that was impossible.
Of course, it could be possible that the maids were just trying to protect this maid but there was nothing else that Bree could do in this situation. Ashlyn, no matter how rational she was, indeed attacked her and what’s more she attacked her in front of everyone, if Bree was to let her go without finding out a decent explanation then it will only cause more trouble to her she was especially worried about the man behind her creating another trouble for her.
Ashlyn blinked her eyes before she looked left and right, at first she was dazed and tried to get up from the floor but when the bounds on her ankles crinkled, her eyes shivered as she looked up at Bree with a terrified expression on her face.
Seeing the expression on Ashlyn’s face, Bree felt albeit bad but more importantly, she felt really wronged. What was with that expression? She was looking at her like Bree was the one who wronged her first, can’t she see that the person who committed wrong was herself? What did she mean by that gaze huh? Why exactly was she looking at her like that?
" Y...Your majesty...why ...why I am here?" Ashlyn asked a hint of fear in her voice. She turned to look at Darren but the latter bowed his head at once when her gaze met with his, it might have already heightened her fear more because Bree could smell the scent of fear wafting from Ashlyn’s body.
"Are you trying to pretend ?" Before Bree could even open her mouth to say anything, Yakov took charge of the situation as he coldly swept his gaze at the kneeling Ashlyn. His eyes burned with a fierce glint that Ginny has never seen before, he looked really scary with those amber eyes shining like the irises of a wolf all set to attack its prey. " Do you think that by pretending that you don’t know anything, you will be able to escape? Is that what you think huh?"
" First ...cons...consort, I don’t understand what you are saying, what did I do?" Ashlyn licked her lips nervously as she stared at the two of them, her complexion turning worse and worse with each passing second. " Did I commit a big mistake——"
" Imprudent! How dare you pretend! You——-"
"It’s all right, first consort," Bree saw that the maid sounded genuinely confused and stopped Yakov, they needed Ashlyn to be completely conscious if they wanted to question her. If this goes on then, she was afraid that Yakov will cause the maid to fall unconscious first before she could even ask what was going on with her. " I am grateful for your care but it would be nice if you calm yourself a little first consort, we need Ashlyn to be perfectly conscious if we want her to question our answers, you raising your voice seems to be scaring her a little."
A little was putting it lightly, Ashlyn seemed to be closed to fainting.
" So, Ashlyn...you don’t remember what happened earlier?" asked Bree as she clasped her hands and placed her elbows on the armrests of the chair as she looked at the maid in front of her.
" D...Did I do something wrong, your majesty?" Ashlyn raised her head as she looked at Bree with a slightly hesitant expression.
Bree smiled as she answered Ashlyn’s question. " Nothing much, you seemed to have been overstimulated by the death of your mate and shifted before charging ahead to attack me."
Her voice was light but the impact was stronger than aiming the tip of the sword at Ashlyn’s throat. The little maid’s face turned pale as she hurriedly looked at Darren, who slightly nodded his head in turn, seeing this Ashlyn’s expression turned even more horrified as she slowly turned her head to look at Bree with a gaze that was full of terror. " Yo...Your majesty, please believe me. I didn’t...I didn’t do it, how can I disrespect Ron like that? I swear on my name your majesty, I had nothing to do with the attack!"
Her explanation sounded weird which would explain why Yakov snorted before chuckling out loud. " You really have some wild imagination, if you didn’t have any reason to attack her majesty, then why did you shift and lunged at her? What’s more, you even shouted at her majesty saying that she should be the one who should have died, do you have an excuse for this?"
