Chapter 157: Why didn’t you die instead ?

Bree clenched her fists as she turned to look at the maid because the maid has been crying earlier, she didn’t pay attention to her properly but now that she was looking at her carefully, Bree could see that the maid looked really pale. Her complexion had turned pallid, quite similar to the complexion of the body lying on the floor, her eyes were dazed as if she couldn’t even sense anything other than the pain of losing her lover.

What Cassidy said just now was —— ’ You have to hold on, Ron wouldn’t have wanted you dead because of him.’

" She is.... dying?" Bree asked after a short pause as she turned to look at Yakov with a bewildered and shocked glance.

" That’s right," Yakov nodded without even the slightest bit of crease on his forehead. " The knight who just died had marked that maid," he raised his hand and pointed at the mark on the crook of the shoulder of the maid. " The two of them don’t seem to be true mates given that she hasn’t lost her mind completely yet, so I guess that the two of them decided to imprint on each other."

" Is there a difference between the two?"

" Of course, there is indeed a difference," replied Yakov with a tired sigh. " Mating bond snaps in places when true mates let down their walls and bare themselves in front of their mates only then do it solidify itself but that can’t be said in case of imprinting, it takes time to completely form but it doesn’t need two shifters baring themselves to each other, the bond can be formed as long as they want to be with each other.. compared to the mating bond the process of imprinting is simple and in case the threads that form the imprinting are snapped then it means slow death of the latter half who was left behind, of course, if they try hard they can survive ... but in case of mating bonds, even the strongest ones are not able to survive the breaking of the bond and losing their mate."

He looked at the maid crying in his arms of Cassidy and sighed. " The maid has a chance to live but she has lost the will, she doesn’t want to fight for her life and that’s why... the pain of losing her mate, is taking her life force away." With a shake of his head, he nodded when Darren looked at him for permission and only then did he raise his hands and muttered, " Formis."

White light shimmered at the tips of his fingers before the entire surrounding was covered with it and when the surroundings returned to their original state, the place where Ron’s body was lying an ice coffin suddenly appeared.

" No! No!No!" The maid in Cassidy’s arms was once again triggered she scratched Cassidy’s arms as she slipped down on the floor. " Ron! Ron!"

"It’s the purest gift that the Goddess has given us but," with a slow blink of his eyes, Yakov walked towards the coffin. " Sometimes gifts can also turn into a curse."

He left Bree alone to silently take in all the information that she has just heard about... so these metaphysical bonds were this strong? She looked up at the maid who was crying on the floor and then at the ice coffin, she always believed that even if the mating bonds were strong, they wouldn’t be as strong as taking someone’s life but now that she saw the condition of the maid in front of her, she realised that she took these metaphysical bonds too lightly.

She watched as Yakov took a white lily from Aileen and placed it in front of Ron’s grave then with a stoic expression he stood back up and lowered his gaze slightly with his hands clasped in front. " The death of Sir Ron Fletcher does not mean just the death of a knight, it signifies the death of a true leader, no one can forget his meritorious deeds in the last war and nor can we forget the courage that he has shown till his last breath, as the heir of the Sceptre family and the first consort, I promise that the Royal family will never treat their loyal subjects with disregard, from now on, the responsibilities that Sir Ron has taken on as son, I will be taking them on."

After finishing his speech, Yakov bowed in front of Ron’s grave. As the first consort, he was only required to bow in front of his queen but now he was willing to lower his head in front of the knights who sacrificed themselves for protecting the Royal family.

He turned around and looked at Bree who raised her head and met his gaze, she knew that it was time for her to give her respects but just as she took a step forward something weird happened, the maid who has been crying till now suddenly looked at her with murky eyes, her face twisted with hatred as she snarled in anger and grief, " This is your fault! Why didn’t you just die!"

And then before anyone could comprehend what was going on the maid lunged at Bree after shifting into an agile-looking fox. Bree understood her grief and she also understood the anger that the maid was going through which was why when Yakov unsheathed his claws, she parted her lips and said, " Catch her alive."

He raised his head and took a glance at her before rolling his eyes as he turned to Aileen, who disappeared in a flash and before she knew—— a snake as thick as the length of her leg shot through the grass and entangled itself around the fox, it twisted around the body of the fox making it impossible for it to escape.

The fox flailed for a while continuing with its struggle, as the snake coiled itself even tighter around her body. For a few minutes the entire thing of twisting and turning continued until, the fox fell unconscious on the floor after being devoid of oxygen for so long.
