Chapter 156: Incompetence

Chapter 156: Incompetence

" No, please! He will wake up give him some time!" The maid who was dragged behind immediately tried to get away from the clutches of the maid who was holding her back as she shouted at Darren. Tears dripped down her cheeks like torrential rain as she ignored everyone’s sympathetic gazes, struggling against the maids who were holding her back, the maid shook her head as if she couldn’t believe that they were something as horrifying as burying her lover in a hole that was six feet deep. " He will wake up... I know he will!"

The maid’s screams echoed in the clearing causing everyone’s heart to wrench, even Bree felt a pang of guilt. Though she knew that the boy died while doing his duty, she couldn’t help but feel bad, only if she was strong enough to control Saphira’s power than the young knight would still be alive, it’s because she was a beat slow that something like this happened. Her fingers unconsciously clenched as she lowered her head in agony, if only ...if only she had tried harder to learn how to control Saphira’s powers, then life could have been saved today.

" It wasn’t your fault, your majesty," Yakov spoke silently from the side causing Bree to raise her head and look at him, he must have seen the surprise in her eyes because he smiled calmly and then turned to look in the front again. " The knights here are all to protect you, they know what’s expected of them in the light of their responsibilities. No one here blames you, as the ruler you could have left us all to die and no one would have pointed a finger at you, do you know why?"

Bree shook her head though Yakov didn’t look at her, he might have seen her shaking her head as he solemnly continued, " Because you are the law here, the most important person of this Empire. Even if the entire regiment of the knights had been wiped out today, no one would have been able to question you, your majesty. Despite knowing the power you hold, you still came forward and fought with that monster for the sake of those whose life doesn’t mean half as important as you."

" That’s not true, I believe that every life is important," Bree immediately interrupted what Yakov said, she came from a world where equality was what mattered the most. She really couldn’t understand how her existence was more important than the knight who died, just because he was born inferior to her. Does it give her the right to treat his life lightly?

No, it clearly doesn’t.

" If I had tried a bit harder, then I would have saved his life ...only if I came a bit earlier... you don’t have to lie to me either, it’s true that no one will blame me but isn’t my duty to protect my subjects, something in which I failed?"

" There are no ’ifs’, your majesty," said Yakov, his eyes locked on the maid who was still refusing to let Ron be buried. " There is only, an ’is’, ’ was’ and ’will’, you can’t change the past, no matter how hard you try... the only thing that you can change is the future and the present, if you hate what happened today so much, then try to get stronger and make sure that something like this never happens again." He turned his head to look at her. " Only then it can be said that you truly regret your incompetence today...instead of locking yourself in the office and ignoring everything else."

Incompetence?

" You could have worded it nicely," said Bree sullenly, she knew that compared to the previous Dragon Queen, she was really incompetent given that she couldn’t even do the simplest of the thing that was to shift but there was no need to say it in such a horrendous manner.

" I did word it nicely before, your majesty," Yakov tilted his head to the side before hitching up his glasses on the bridge of his nose. " But you didn’t want me lying to you, so I decided to put it as nicely as I could in the least offensive way, after all, that’s what you asked of me, anyway..." he narrowed his eyes and then raised his chin to look at her. " I always wanted to know why is it that your majesty has never tried to shift, I can understand that your body is weaker compared to before but don’t you think that you turning a blind eye to it and waiting that it will get better is a bit of a passive approach to your trouble? Being the Queen means that you will be always targeted by your enemies, if you are targeted then it means that your subjects will be targeted as well...if you want to protect them, then my Queen, you have to work harder."

He turned his gaze away from her. " And if you can’t get stronger then you have to learn to face these situations without blaming yourself because a monarch’s incompetence is always repaid by his or her subject, no matter how small of that incompetence might be... but of course, I too seemed to have gone out of practising while finishing the documents that were piled in my office."

His gaze turned sombre as he took a step away from her. " And my incompetence has grown as well, I couldn’t protect my wife nor could I protect my fellow subjects, I have to say I am embarrassed." ’

Bree watched as the maid named Cassidy came out of the group and hugged the maid who was struggling to fight against the maids, as soon as Cassidy hugged her, she seemed to have whispered something in the ear of the grief-stricken maid and of course, with her shifter hearing, Bree heard what Cassidy said.

Her expression changed as she turned to look at Yakov who was looking at the sight in front of him with a carefully blank expression as he said, " This what happens when the rulers are incompetent, your majesty ... looks like you and I both failed in protecting two lives."
