The manticore shifted, sounds of bones cracking filled the air and Harley watched the burly man turn into a horrifying beast with the head of a human, a body of a lion and a long venomous tail of the scorpion behind him. Her body stiffened and like a lifeless doll she stayed where she was watching the manticore prowling in front of her like a virus predator, there was nothing that she could do but stare at it.

Growling with foam frothing in his mouth, the manticore walked closers, its sharp claws making a dreadful click-clack sound against the pavement.

Harley could have stood up, could have run away but she couldn’t do it. All she could do was stare at the manticore as it lunged at her, eyes shut And her heart beating in terror.

Heart in her throat, she prepared herself to be torn into pieces when she heard a loud bang followed by a painful roar, stunned she opened her eyes and felt like she has been saved from a great disaster.

" Cian!" She shouted in great relief, now she understood why the system didn’t save her it was waiting for Cian to protect her like a supposed male lead, wasn’t it?

Dashing as ever, Cian stood in front of her protectively and as for the manticore, it was lying on the pavement after being knocked into the side. Sirens were small and looked like they couldn’t tackle a canary but that was where their strength lay, with their small and slender figure they were a lethal force to mess with, their swift speed and strength came as a great surprise to anyone who messed with them and what was more they were more of a ’you mess with me, I will mess with you, your family and your cow’ kind of beasts, so it wasn’t a surprise that despite being humiliated like this the manticore shifter didn’t to attack Cian back.

" You come with me," said Cian peering down at the manticore with a calm look on his face. He didn’t know why the beast suddenly attacked Harley all of a sudden nor did he know why he was hearing a voice that no one could in his head like a damn alarm clock but he would find out about it and once he finds out who was messing with him and then he will tear that person into pieces.

Bones popped in place again and the shifter shifted back to his human form without wasting a single second. The burly man raised his hands and panted in the manner of a man who was dying in because of thirst and breathed heavily through his mouth. " I am...I am ... I am telling you that something is wrong. I didn’t want to do it either, I swear.. she just came and something happened ... I swear it was something really bad, I can’t explain it but I just took one look at her and then something happened, I can’t tell you but I ju..just felt really angry,"

This was something that Cian felt too, he couldn’t explain it but all he knew was that he needed to save Harley even when he didn’t want to do it. Something like that wasn’t something he would do in all honesty, she wasn’t his mate and he shouldn’t be caring about her safety or anything.

But he did it, he saved her despite not knowing why he was doing it.

" You.." he walked to the manticore at an awkward pace and raised his hand. " You ...You come with me, there is a lot I need to talk to you about, okay? I just need to talk to you for a bit and nothing else okay."

Was it possible for an assassin and a Siren to just talk to him? The manticore didn’t believe a thing that Cian said and got to his feet while shaking his head. " I didn’t do anything, don’t come at me.. don’t you dare come at me... I swear! I didn’t do anything!"

And then without waiting for Cian to say anything, the manticore rushed away as if he was afraid that he was going to get eaten by a monster.

" Hey! Hey! Hey!" shouted Cian after the manticore running away before turning to look at Dominic standing next to the guild. " Go and catch him! What are you looking at!?"

" Huh? What?" Dominic couldn’t understand why Cian was asking him to catch the manticore was beating once not enough? Why was he asking to catch the manticore for no reason at all? Did he want to beat that manticore again? Since when did that man become so much of a women’s rights enforcer?

But no matter what, he was his good brother and he was going to do what his brother wanted him to do. So, without asking any questions, Dominic ran after the manticore shifter ——- the man ran fast but Dominic ran just as fast as he chased after the beast.

Cian watched them go and was pondering whether he should rush after them or not when he felt someone throw themselves at his back. Stunned he turned around to see what it was and sure enough as he thought about it, it was Harley with tears seeping down her face as she hugged him from behind.

" I was so scared Cian, you have no idea ... I was so scared, I thought I was going to die!" This time Harley didn’t have to pretend, she was truly scared, all she needed to do was to take advantage of the situation and act like she has been bullied by that manticore.

" I know ..." trailed off Cian trying his best to get Harley off him but the more he tried the harder she clung on to him. " Let...Let go ...this is not appropriate."

But Harley didn’t move nor did she let go of him instead she kept clinging on to him, hugging and sobbing like she was willing to fill up all the dried rivers of the Empire.

" Harley...."

" What’s the perfect way to make a crying woman calm down?" The teasing voice was back, slithering over his back like thousands of scuttling spiders. "It’s to kiss them, kiss her and make her forget everything that she just went through, come on..."

" Kiss her."

" F*ck off," snarled Cian but no matter what he did or how much he shouted in his head, the voice kept barking like a dog in the back of his head.

And before he knew it, she was pinching Harley’s chin all set to kiss her, despite his heart and beast denying, and retreating inside him, Cian lowered his head and——

" What are you doing, fourth consort?"
