Chapter 45: Death Evades Me Like A Plague
Rama still sat on the floor as she watched his retreating figure tread deeper into the forest. He probably expected her to follow behind, but this time, she chose freedom and death was the only way out, although her only regret would be leaving Malika behind with the night creatures.
But even though she was there, what could she possibly do for the girl? Her presence alone resulted to her being trapped in a dangerous situation so maybe her absence would make her life easier, hopefully.
She knew he wouldn’t chase after her, it would hurt his pride and ego, to chase after a human lesser than him just to cause her torture and pain, so she stood up and moved stiffly toward a different route, away from where the seers lived and away from him.
She knew he was well aware of what was running through her mind at that instant and she suddenly felt relieved that he wasn’t coming after her when she saw his figure disappearing into the darkness.
Her feet moved with hurried steps as she scurried across the dark forest with heavy huffs of breath. Her skin crawled in dread with only the thought of him catching up to her.
She dreaded the fact that it was one of his mind games and he was merely letting her have a taste of freedom and hope that she could finally be free before crushing It to pieces, after all he confessed his sadistic character of crushing hopes at the highest peak, so the thought wasn’t entirely impossible.
She hoped inwardly that he had given up on her as she trudged towards an unknown path. The cold midnight breeze brushed past her, making strands of her hair come out of place that she nervously tucked back in, as she looked back from where she was coming from every second cautiously for signs of Draco, but for the meantime there was nothing as only darkness greeted her sight.
Her hope gradually increased in every second as she moved farther away from where she was, but still she could taste a pinch of the sour tang of fear coating her tongue, dreading the thought that it could be one of Draco’s mind games and she wouldn’t be able to evade the heavy burden she woke up with every single day.
The sudden loud hooting of the owl made her head jerk backward in alert, scrutinizing where she came from with sharp eyes even though it was dark and almost impossible for anything to be perceptible to her human sight.
She let out a soft sigh of relief as she looked straight ahead and continued treading down the path until she emerged out of the forest path to stand on a cliff.
She dragged her feet slowly until she was standing at the utmost edge of the cliff. The breeze blew on her stronger, making her gown flail back and forth and her hair which was tied in a bun came loose to scatter with the wind in a serene manner.
She could hear the sound of the waves as they clashed and she looked below the cliff to see the gleaming river with waves clashing against each other in a fierce manner. Drowning was a much easier way to die, she thought inwardly as she stared at the water.
She hoped inwardly that Malika would forgive her for leaving her behind without a goodbye or even informing her and it slightly broke her heart, when she visualized Malika’s reaction if she ever heard of her unplanned suicide.
Finally, she would evade the brutality, unfairness and burden that the world had placed on her slender shoulders that appeared too heavy for her to carry. No more worries, no more burden and no more pain.
She moved closer to the edge and with not a hint of fear in her heart, she took the leap. She found herself falling midair, the heavy gust of wind blew on her as she fell, making her hair and gown scatter in the wind.
Her gaze met the unblemished dark grey sky with the crescent moon on it, shining its dim light on the land and a small smile grazed her lips, as she still had the opportunity to drink in such a serene sight before she would close her eyes to an endless slumber.
The heavy wind blowing on her made it impossible to keep her eyes open any longer, so she closed it shut impulsively until her body plunged into the cold water. The cold water pricked her skin as she drowned into the deepest depth of the water.
The moonlight reflected on the surface of the water in an ethereal spectrum. She drowned deeper into the dark waters and she found herself gagging for air which made her lungs painfully constrict.
It seemed drowning wasn’t as easy as she thought after all. It was painful and cold as ice, making her body turn numb. She so badly wanted to breath air into her lungs for one second, but she didn’t have the strength to swim back upwards, so she gave up and accepted death instead.
Bubbles erupted from her mouth in the yield to convey air, until she fell stiff and her eyelids shut close. Her entire life fleeted past her eyes like her life was played in front of her in fast forward and a teardrop fell down her cheeks, before she succumbed into a void of darkness.
Finally, she was liberated from the world.
------------
Her jade eyes shot open as she coughed out a good amount of water as she sat up in a deteriorated state, taking heavy huffs of breath into her lungs.
"Are you alright?" She heard a male husky voice next to her, but she was in a muddled state, so she took time to recover as she observed her surrounding.
The realization suddenly hit her as goosebumps manifested on her skin from the piercing cold. Her drenched clothes and wet hair made her situation worsen as she trembled like a drenched kitten in the rain.
Her suicide was an epic failure.
Someone had saved her, obviously the person next to her and when she strained her eyes in the darkness to see who, she saw a pair of glowing red eyes staring back at her which made her yelp in horror that it was Draco, but when she looked closer she sighed in relief as it wasn’t him, but a different vampire with a lighter shade of red eyes and it was like Zamiel’s.
It made her wonder if dark red eyed vampires were scarce and she suddenly realized their red eyes varied in ranks which meant Draco was obviously the highest in rank, then Zamiel and the mysterious one in front of her, while the other ones followed as the lowest ranks.
Although she figured they might have been other dark red eyed ones like Zamiel and the mysterious vampire, but they seemed scarce as she only came across the light red ones often in the castle.
It wasn’t Zamiel who had saved her, which would have been ludicrous but a different vampire she had never laid eyes on until that night.
She wanted to move, but the cold made her freeze in position and the calm expression on his face made him look less threatening, but she wouldn’t be fooled by the innocent mask he wore when a blood sucking monster lay beneath it.
"Why did you pull me out of the water?" She queried with a sharp tone as she shot daggers at him and she saw his brows crease in confusion.
"I just saved your life miss. A simple thank you would do." The mysterious night creature said with a neutral tone, there was no offense or irritation in it which left her a bit confused. Why was he addressing her in a respectful manner? She was nothing but a maid and from observing his clothing, he seemed like someone from a high rank.
He was clad in expensive black clothing and gold necklace adorned his neck. A gold earring dropped from the lobe of one ear and his hair was tied in a ponytail with a gold band, which made her realise he liked gold, but she shook it off, his likes weren’t important.
"I never asked to be saved." She muttered beneath her breath, even though she knew he would catch every word.
"Suicide?" He said softly as he studied her intently, but she couldn’t open her mouth to speak any longer as her teeth clattered softly against one another from the unforgiving cold biting her skin.
He suddenly pulled his jacket off and wore it over her which made her head jerk up to look at him like she had seen a ghost.
"What are you doing? W-who are you?" She blurted out awkwardly in confusion.
"I’m Damien, Zamiel’s brother." He said with a calm tone like a refined gentleman but still, she could see a flicker of mischievousness in his red eyes.
Zamiel’s brother?
Why would Zamiel’s brother save her and what the hell was he doing in the forest.
"Draco told me to bring you back." Damien said and she subconsciously gave herself a face smack as she realized he could read minds too.
"I’m not going back." She managed to stay in a hoarse but firm voice, but a sarcastic smirk appeared on his lips.
"You don’t have a choice miss." He said with a slight chuckle that sounded rather dark in her ears, as he looked at her with a glint in his eyes.
This time, she hadn’t evaded death, rather death had evaded her. Death always evaded her like a plague and now she was trapped in a world she no longer wanted to exist in, but there was no escape for her.
