The Demon King's First General -
Chapter 147: Arriving At The Border
Chapter 147: Arriving At The Border
The sharp, pointed shards pierced the grotesque creature’s skin. It raised its remaining arm to protect its head from the icicles, but it was not enough to defend its back. It turned into a porcupine, with blood oozing out from every wound, dripping slowly at its frozen white fur.
But it was not the end of Ruq’s attack; she raised her hand, and a giant sword made of ice formed above the monster’s head.
Upon sensing the danger, the ice giant stomped with its right foot, causing the ground to shake, hoping for the woman to lose her balance. However, Ruq walked her way upward, stepping on the platforms of energy she created.
Then, as she moved her hand downward, the sword plunged into the creature’s head, splitting its whole body into two.
"That was easy," Ruq whispered, then she turned around.
All eyes were staring at her; they were surprised. Not a single person uttered a word. Ruq let out a smile. She was about to say something, but the ice giant’s arm moved all of a sudden and slammed into her current position.
The revenant managed to evade, but the monster’s other hand, which was supposed to be severed, caught her from behind.
Ruq gritted her teeth in pain as the monster’s grip got tighter each second. As a response, she conjured another glacier that aimed at the gigantic fingers, squeezing her.
She was freed the moment her attack connected. Then she turned around and gave the hand a palmstrike, sending it backward.
"Annoying," she uttered upon seeing the previously split ice giant regenerate.
Aside from its torn mouth, not a single wound could be seen on its white fur. Ruq darted upward; a freezing vortex of energy formed at her palm, and as she got closer to the monster’s face, she slammed it to its eyes.
The condensed energy exploded, and hundreds of shards shredded the head of the ice giant before it fell to the ground once more.
Just to make sure that it wouldn’t come back to life again, Ruq severed its head by sending an ice slash to its neck. She didn’t even avert her eyes from the monster for several seconds, however, after a half minute of silence, its limbs twitched and nerves protruded from the wound on its neck.
"Tss," Ruq hissed in annoyance upon seeing the scene in front of her eyes.
"There’s no other choice, but..." She added, then glanced at the villagers behind her.
In the next second, she shook her head.
’Their safety comes first,’ she added in her thoughts.
Then, as the ice giant’s head reattached to its body, it stood up and searched for the revenant, but an iceberg almost similar to the size of the monster appeared above the sky. Afterward, it crashed and shattered at the top of the monster’s head, which caused it to fall forward.
Shackles made of thick layers of ice enveloped the ice giant’s limbs and neck, preventing its movement and pinning it down. Then Ruq plunged downward in front it.
"Free. Me!" The ice giant roared.
Its shout was enough to produce a shockwave, but Ruq parried it with only her hand. The distance between the two decreased as the revenant stepped closer.
Upon reaching an arm’s length, she put her hand on its chin. The creature let out another non-stop roar, and Ruq’s long hair flew backward.
It summoned its strength, and cracks appeared at the shackles holding it down. The moment they got shattered, the ice giant moved its hand to grab the revenant; however, its movement came to a halt as a massive blue light wisp escaped from its mouth.
Ruq stared at the unusual life force and gulped. She bit her lower lip while thinking about how to eat the scrumptious meal before her.
"This is more than enough for a lifetime," she uttered, and she began sucking the blue speck of light.
It took her a dozen minutes to fully consume the massive life force. She felt full afterward, and the pain she received from the battle vanished from her body.
Then she looked at the ice giant’s withered corpse.
"Let’s see if you can still stand up again," she said, but while she was examining the enormous body, it emitted a strange light before disappearing from her sight.
Afterward, a black card with a circle containing a white skull as its design cover floated in mid-air. Curious about the thing, she extended her hand, but it shattered into tiny fragments as soon as her finger touched it.
"What was.... that?" Ruq whispered.
Her mind was still occupied by the strange card. She even failed to notice that the villagers were already staring at her with different expressions.
Some were smiling in front of their savior, while others were shaking in fear.
"M-monster," one of the villagers accidentally whispered.
Upon realizing the weight of her word, she stepped backward and ran away.
Ruq heard her loud and clear, and she looked into the villager’s eyes. No one uttered a single word, but their gazes were enough to express their thoughts. There was a part of them that was afraid of her.
’It’s okay; I just need Gramps,’ Ruq thought, beaming with confidence.
Then she searched for her grandfather among the crowd, and she felt betrayed by her expectations. The expression in his grandfather’s eyes had the same pattern of misery as the others.
Upon seeing this, the revenant didn’t waste another second; she stepped backward, and a mist appeared between her and the villagers. Ruq looked at her grandfather one last time, and something dripped down from the corner of her eyes.
After seeing his grandchild’s tears, the old man came rushing in front, but he was a little bit late. The mist had already vanished along with her granddaughter.
. . . . .
"So that’s the reason why you keep on following me," Zeno said without a single change in his expression.
"I don’t have a choice; you’re the only one I can trust," Ruq replied with her eyes still on the sand.
However, Zeno didn’t hear her; his thoughts were all about the black card.
"A gamera and a chenoo," he uttered while fidgeting with the black dice between his fingers.
"A what?" Ruq exclaimed at the demon, but it was Sinclair who replied to her query.
"A chenoo, it’s a cannibalistic ice giant, a monster that will not die as long as its frozen heart is still intact," the Apostle of Justice interjected.
"Did I ask for your opinion?" Ruq replied, her eyes rolling sideways.
"I’m just sharing facts," Sinclair said without averting her eyes in front.
The two people were like siblings, always bickering with one another. Zeno took a moment and glanced at them, but their little quarrel looked like it wouldn’t end anytime soon.
’Fools,’ he uttered before focusing his gaze in front.
The creepy-looking trees were now more visible, and the eerie atmosphere was enough to instill fear in anyone.
’They’re already aware of us,’ Zeno conveyed inside his head as he felt several presences hiding behind the large trees.
They were doing well in concealing their energies, but no one could hide from Eliana’s Legacy.
Zeno tossed the black dice up, and it rolled in the air before emitting a white light. As he caught it with his right hand, he disappeared with a grin on his face, like a predator who had found its prey.
And the entities watching their movements from afar were surprised by his sudden disappearance. They searched for him, but their necks were snapped while the others had their skulls pierced by a jet-black dagger.
Zeno killed more than a dozen corrupt humans in a span of a minute. Not even a single one managed to react to his assassination.
"These guys would not even pass as cannon fodders during the War of Reclamation," Zeno conveyed, shaking his head.
Afterward, he looked up and stared at the half-faced moon hiding behind the clouds drifting across the sky. He strode deeper into the forest with his hands inside his pocket. Then he noticed a one-eyed crow observing him from a tree branch.
"Please don’t be too boring; you must entertain me!" The demon said, smiling while looking at the crow.
. . . . .
Meanwhile, somewhere in an open field in a certain part of Duskstalker Kingdom, a woman was lying next to a wyvern. Her eyes were closed as if she were sleeping, but the sudden movement of her lips, forming an inverted arch, signified that she was not.
"What an unusual visitor; should I inform the others?" She uttered the moment she opened her eyes, then giggled. "My dear Celestine would be fuming if I told her about it."
Afterward, she stood up and caressed the wyvern’s head.
’But what brought him here? We’re getting ready for the attack at the capital, and his order is not to engage in a fight with him in the meantime,’ she contemplated in deep silence.
