Chapter 146: Cannibalistic Ice Giant
Chapter 146: Cannibalistic Ice Giant
"Move a little further, or I’ll take your soul this instance," Zeno stated without showing any changes in his emotions.
"Still arrogant, huh?" The woman replied, then let go of her hand hanging around the man’s neck before stepping a little backward.
Then she raised her hands up in the air, showing her submission.
"I thought you would like that; you already kissed me after all," she commented out of nowhere and placed her forefinger on her lips, teasing the demon in front.
However, Zeno just smirked and didn’t bother to reply. He resumed his steps and left the two beings behind.
Sinclair and Ruq looked at each other without saying a word. The Apostle of Justice was still holding her weapon, ready to strike or defend at any point in time, while the place where the revenant was standing turned frozen and was expanding after every second that passed.
Upon sensing the unwanted dispute between the two, Zeno halted his tracks and looked behind.
’Should I stop them?’ He thought.
But after several seconds of contemplation, he shook his head, and his lips curled into a grin.
"Well, they are not my concern in the first place," he uttered, and he turned around before resuming his walk towards the boundary of Duskstalker Kingdom.
As he came closer and saw the eerie atmosphere surrounding the place, the demon let out a smile.
’This reminds me of the Forest of Nightmares,’ he commented inside his mind.
Meanwhile, Sinclair and Ruq were still up at their staring contest, as if the first one to blink would lose her life.
"Who are you?" Sinclair was the one to break the silence.
"A little demon is not qualified to know my name," Ruq answered with the coldest voice she could muster.
Sinclair’s brows furrowed after hearing what the undead called her.
"Demon?" She asked, wanting to know the reason why the woman referred to her as such.
However, upon seeing her surprised reaction, the revenant just smiled and walked away, leaving her standing in a daze.
Ruq went after Zeno’s footsteps without saying a single thing, like a servant who silently followed her master’s lead.
"Why did you come? I don’t even remember calling your name," Zeno said out of nowhere.
The revenant lowered her gaze upon hearing the question. Several seconds had already passed before she started talking.
"I cannot live like a human anymore," she said while doing her best to hide the sadness lingering in her voice.
. . . . .
In the village located on the outskirts of the Frostbloom Kingdom, the villagers were preparing for a feast to welcome one of their family members, a person whom they all thought had died a few years ago.
While they were busy preparing for the celebration, a woman sneaked out of a house and walked to the village’s premises.
Despite the snow drifting in the wind, she only had a loose white robe as her protection from the cold.
"Ruq, you haven’t changed at all; your appearance is still the same as the last time I saw you," a man stated as soon as he appeared from one corner of the street.
He approached the woman in white and smiled.
"Where have you been? Everyone did their best to look for you after the snowstorm, but you’re nowhere to be found. Even your parents..." He was about to say something not appropriate but managed to stop himself from stating the fact at the very last second.
He observed if there were any changes in the woman’s expression, and after seeing that there weren’t, he spoke once again.
"Anyway, that’s not important right now, all that matters is that you’re safe and sound," he said, smiling.
Then he gave the woman a little tap on her right shoulder before heading to the place of celebration.
The woman continued her steps; she didn’t mind the man’s words. After all, the two tombstones she saw at the back of their house were enough to know what happened and to whom they belonged. She looked above and tried her best to smile despite the tears forming at the corners of her eyes.
"Father, Mother, thank you for not giving up on searching for me to the point that both of you lost your lives in the process," she whispered.
Then she wiped the liquid that was about to fall on her cheeks and turned around to go back.
"I’ll live my life to the fullest for the two of you," she stated with a newfound determination.
But everything that happened next was beyond her expectations. On that night, during the celebration of her return, almost every villager’s specialty was served at a long table. Blue lobsters, along with different dishes made from duck and rabbit meat, made the people drool with their eyes gleaming in excitement.
However, it was not the case for the main character of that night. Despite the numerous delicious delicacies in front of her, not even one triggered her appetite, but she did her best to hide it. Her kindness couldn’t fathom to disappoint the people who put in their best effort to prepare the feast just for her.
"Welcome back, Ruq!" A woman who was in her teens shouted in joy, and the other villagers followed her lead, expressing how thankful they were for Ruq to be back.
Afterward, the feast started, and the revenant’s grandfather filled her plate with all the types of food present.
"G-Gramps, I’m fine; you should fill your plate instead," Ruq stated, but her grandfather insisted.
"No, don’t be bothered by it. I used to do this when you were a kid. Here! Take a bite," he said with a smile.
Upon seeing how happy he was, Ruq just let him feed her, but as soon as the burnt meat came into contact with her tongue, she wanted to puke.
The taste was terrible, and she felt surprised about knowing this, though she still chewed and swallowed it fine.
"How was it?" Her grandfather asked.
"Delicious," she answered, lying.
"Then, here, try another. This one," the old man replied.
And as soon as Ruq saw her grandfather cutting another piece of meat, she planned her escape; however, the villager’s curious stares didn’t allow her to do so.
On that night, she was forced to eat plenty of dishes—enough to upset her stomach. She vomitted them all out after the feast, and it drained almost all of her strength.
This made her realize that she couldn’t coexist with humans anymore, but for her grandfather, who suffered a lot during the past years, she made her resolve to stay.
Being an undead, Ruq’oyah didn’t need even an ounce of sleep. While the villagers were busy dreaming and snoring, the revenant was guarding the village from any monsters. It was her way to pass time and search for a meal.
The life force of a monster couldn’t be compared to a human’s, but she treated the whole village as her family and not a source of food. During the day, she lived like a human being, acting like a filial granddaughter, but when the night struck, she turned into a cold-blooded hunter. This was her postulate, but everything changed after that certain time.
. . . . .
It was an ordinary day; the sun was up, and the villagers were busy with their everyday lives. The men were gathering firewood while the others were cleaning up the pile of snow.
"Gramps, do you need help?" A woman asked as she saw her grandfather shoveling some stacks of snow in their backyard.
"Hmnn, you need not; I’m still strong despite my age," the old man replied.
He even showed his dwindling muscles and laughed. Upon seeing his actions, the woman chuckled. She didn’t insist any further and just watched him work. After a while, she headed inside the house and returned with a glass of water on hand.
"Gramps, take a break, here," she said, smiling, as she handed the glass.
"Thank you," the old man replied.
He was about to drink when the ground started to shake, causing him to lose his balance, but Ruq grabbed him from behind. The trembling continued, and the villagers were forced to go out of their houses.
"What’s happening?" A woman yelled, but she received no answers aside from screams.
The next second, the shaking of the ground came to a halt, and an eerie laughter reverberated in the open space.
"Look! Over there!" A man pointed at his side.
As the villagers turned their heads in the direction he was pointing, they all froze in fear. A dreadful creature was standing tall near one of the houses; it had long fangs and a bloody, torn mouth. Two horns were sticking on the side of its head, and its rounded white eyes glared at them like how a predator eyed its prey.
As if it were glad to see the group of humans, it let out a loud roar.
"Flesh. Fresh." The creature spoke with excitement as it tore the house with its long, elongated claws.
"What in the world is that? Should we run? Is that a Yetti?" The villagers asked in succession.
"That thing is huge," another one commented.
Its size was bigger than a yetti, and its grotesque appearance made it look like a cannibalistic ice giant.
"It’s not the time to admire it; run!" One of the women exclaimed, and another set of screams echoed as they fled from the monster.
Then, as the creature saw the people running away, it made its move. Despite its enormous size, it was nimble, jumping from one house to another. Soon enough, it caught up to the group and blocked their path ahead.
"S-Stop right there!" A man stuttered as he summoned his courage to step up and point a kitchen knife at the monster, but it roared in front of him, causing him to collapse from fear.
Afterward, it grabbed the woman carrying a child and placed them near its torn-opened mouth. The monster was about to take a bite, but its limb was cut as a sharp glacier protruded underneath. The ice giant’s blood painted the snow red, but it reacted like it felt no pain.
The next second, it moved its gaze downward and glanced at its severe arm before searching for the culprit.
"Undead," it said with its hoarse voice upon noticing the revenant’s presence.
Then, to protect the villagers, Ruq stepped forward. Her grandfather grabbed her hand, but after making eye contact, followed by a little nod, he let go of her.
And as soon as she reached the front, hundreds of icicles materialized in the air, all of them pointing at the grotesque ice giant.
"I’ll make you regret coming to this place," Ruq stated, and with a flick of her finger, all of the projectiles soared towards the monster.
