Chapter 108: Saber Sigil

One month later.
Dungeon, 79th Floor.
[DING! Congratulations, Agares! You have defeated the floor boss]
[Name: Fire Griffin Overlord]

"Just a bit more and I’ll level up."
Agares glanced briefly to the side, looking at Aoi who was still staring at her system panel. She had helped Agares during the fight, even though the damage she dealt wasn’t significant.
Still, to gain EXP and evolve, Aoi had to support Agares in every battle—whether by attacking, defending, or healing him.
After picking up the dropped item he needed, Agares stepped into the dungeon corridor that had just opened ahead of him.
Right in front of him now was the 80th floor, the last place adventurers had ever explored in this S-rank dungeon.
Since then, no solo adventurer or party had been able to break the record of reaching the 80th floor.
But Agares wasn’t an adventurer. He was a Saber-class knight who had been fighting alone from the first floor up to the 79th floor for more than two years.
According to the system’s prediction, Agares would likely reach the 100th floor within five years since his first exploration.
He stepped into the 80th floor and looked at the hallway ahead. Agares had no idea what kind of monster he might encounter.
There was something that made adventurers stop at the 80th floor—whether it was the monster’s strength or something else unknown.
What’s certain is that Agares had to stay alert for whatever might happen on the 80th floor.
"Where’s the route to the floor boss?" asked Aoi, walking beside Agares.
"According to the smart navigation, we need to keep walking straight to reach another area."
"Is it still far?" Aoi asked. Agares shook his head.
"I’m not sure."
Agares and Aoi kept walking until they reached their first fork with three corridors.
Using Aoi’s sound resonance, they were able to determine the direction of each path clearly.
Sound waves floated down all three corridors slowly as Aoi carefully mapped out the routes.
The first corridor was a monster room.
The second, in the middle, was a mini-boss room.
The third, on the right, was something different—no monsters and no treasure chest.
Agares was surprised. It was the first time he’d come across a room Aoi couldn’t fully describe.
That made Agares even more suspicious.
Not wanting to fight right away, he asked Aoi to take the right route with him. Aoi had no objections.
She looked around, noticing that the corridor walls didn’t seem naturally formed like regular dungeon corridors.
Agares felt increasingly strange and suspicious.
Up ahead, he and Aoi stopped walking when they saw a wooden door blocking access to another room.
Before entering, a short message was posted on the wall next to the door, containing a warning and notice to all adventurers.
[Leave this Dungeon immediately. A large door blocks the dungeon world from floor 80 to floor 81]
[No one has ever been able to open it]
’A door? Isn’t that just a standard dungeon door?’
Agares grabbed the doorknob and tried to open it. But the wooden door seemed tightly locked from the inside.
Agares wasn’t going to give up.
"Saber Skill: Shadow Cleave!"
He swung his glowing purple sword both vertically and horizontally. The X-shaped slash hit the wooden door, destroying it instantly.
The door opened by force. Agares and Aoi stepped inside and found that the room was someone’s private quarters.
There were bookshelves, a wooden desk and chair, a bed, and dining tools with leftover food. Everything was old, dusty, rotting, and moldy.
"Who lived here?"
Aoi didn’t care about the books or other stuff. She jumped up on the bed and bounced around on it.
Unlike Aoi, Agares stood near the dining table with old, dusty wooden plates and cups covered in cobwebs.
The rotten food smell was too much for Agares to bear.
"At least finish your food before you die."
He moved to the bookshelf, examining the books. None had titles on the cover or spine.
When Agares opened one of them, it turned out to be someone’s personal diary.
Not just that one—all the books mostly described the experiences of a man named Benhur exploring the dungeon with his adventuring party.
That was the name of the adventurer who had reached the 80th floor. People claimed he did it solo—but actually, he didn’t.
According to the journals, he and his party had cleared at least 67 floors together.
Eventually, they parted ways because of Benhur’s huge ambition to reach floor 100 and make history.
Benhur continued clearing the floors one by one, even if it took a lifetime.
[All my adventures ended in vain. That damn door made me feel powerless.]
[I truly feel betrayed.]
"What really happened?" asked Agares.
After he couldn’t proceed to floor 81, he went insane and depressed.
He refused to return to Midgard City because he was ashamed of his failure to reach floor 100.
He spent the rest of his life on the 80th floor, the place that trapped him. He ate monster meat and kept fighting to survive.
He was always alone—talking, eating, feeling sad, and crying all by himself.
The last entry in his diary stated he would return in a new reincarnated form, hoping to one day solve this mystery.
"He didn’t write anything after this."
When Agares turned to the final page, he was shocked to see a sketch of a strange pattern.
It explained that this pattern was carved into the door on floor 80. The design looked familiar to Agares.
"I think I’ve seen this pattern before."
Agares kept trying to remember it clearly.
Eventually, it reminded him of the Saber mark on the back of his right hand.
He removed his glove and saw the Saber pattern clearly.
Agares compared it with the sketch in the diary.
It was a perfect match.
"Could it be that only a Saber can go deeper into the dungeon?" asked Agares.
"There’s no use guessing. I need to prove it myself."
