Chapter 98: 84

The room fell silent for a moment, the atmosphere growing somewhat heavy. Eventually, it was Grandma Sun who broke the silence, "Let’s go check on Hua Zi."

Wang Guiyu then snapped back to reality, leading Grandma Sun and the others to Mo Junhua’s room. Lan Tian had dropped someone off in the morning and went there already, now waiting in the hall.

Mo Junhua could tell from the footsteps that Lan Tian had also arrived. He thought she would come in with Grandma Sun and the others to see him, but only Grandma Sun and two others came. That heartless wretch did not appear, leaving him with a faint sense of disappointment. He had been looking forward to it so much that he could no longer focus on his book.

Mo Yuanle chatted with Mo Junhua for a moment, asking about the sensation in his leg. Learning that Lan Tian had already applied a medicinal plaster and that, for the moment, there were no issues, the family of four left.

Wang Guiyu insisted that Grandma Sun take the old hen home and refused to accept any money for it. Ultimately, the old hen was taken back.

Back at home, Grandma Sun repeatedly emphasized that Lan Tian must cure Mo Junhua’s leg. Lan Tian made a promise to definitely heal him.

Because of Mo Junhua’s circumstances, Lan Tian couldn’t leave just yet, and the trip to Shanghai had to be postponed. Grandma Sun specifically instructed Lan Tian to write a letter to Great Grandpa Mo to explain the situation, so they wouldn’t worry about her not showing up and assuming something had happened.

By the afternoon, the village had learned that Mo Junhua from the military had returned, saved Grandma Sun in the county town, and had injured his leg—the news had spread throughout the village.

No one knew who the blabbermouth was, but the gossip spread everywhere. Those in the village who loved stirring up trouble also ran up to the door to watch the commotion.

Good deeds don’t leave home, while bad news travels a thousand miles.

Wang Guiyu was infuriated and stressed to the point of illness. Mo Junhua had returned this time to meet a potential bride, and they had already settled on a girl. The girl was happy to know he was a soldier, and both families had selected a date. They were simply waiting for him to return and marry, for the girl to have a look and get to know him, so she wouldn’t be marrying a man whose face she didn’t even recognize.

During dinner, Wang Guiyu slammed her chopsticks down, too angry to eat anymore.

"Dammit, who is spreading these rumors? Where does Sanwa limp?"

Wang Guiyu usually seemed meek and easy to bully, but when angered, she could be terrifying. Her sharp gaze swept over her two sons and their wives, as well as her grandchildren.

"Mom, why are you getting angry at us? We didn’t say anything," Chunlai’s wife, noticing her mother-in-law had frightened her son, hugged him and soothed.

"It wasn’t us who injured Third Brother. If he hadn’t gone to save Grandma Sun, how would he have broken his leg? If you’re going to blame anyone, blame Grandma Sun and the others."

"Are those even the words of a human being?" Hearing her sister-in-law’s comment, Chunhua was nearly fuming with rage as she shot up to glare at her.

"My brother is a soldier. Facing such a situation, he would definitely heroically rescue people; it’s the duty of a soldier. Are you suggesting my brother should have stood by and let someone die, become a coward afraid of death, and then let others gossip about Sanwa, making it impossible for him to hold his head up in dignity?"

"Ever since you married into our family, you’ve brought nothing but trouble. Before, out of respect for my eldest brother, our family refrained from holding you accountable. Everything you eat, wear, and use—was it not all paid for with Third Brother’s money? Even that sewing machine in your room was bought with his money. When spending that money, why didn’t you find it too hot to handle?"

Chunhua had been suppressing her anger for over a decade, unable to vent it. Previously, it was Chuntao who dominated her, and thinking of the family’s well-being, she held back. Later, when Chunlai’s wife entered the family, another domineering figure, she restrained herself considering the challenges her eldest brother faced in finding a wife. But now, she couldn’t hold it in any longer and suddenly exploded, leaving her whole family shocked and dumbfounded.

After a while, Chunlai’s wife came back to her senses, realizing she had scolded Chunhua, and she shouted towards Chunlai, "Chunlai, your sister insulted your wife, and you do nothing about it! Are you dead? Look at your sister, acting all humble and tolerant like a young bride on normal days, and now she can’t keep up the act anymore, showing her true colors! Let me tell you, if you don’t stand up for me, I’ll take our child and go back to my parents’ house tomorrow, woohoo..."

"Time to eat!" Mo Junhua’s gaze was icy as he swept it across everyone in the room, where it landed seemed to freeze people solid, causing each person to instinctively avoid his eyes as they trembled and buried their heads in their meals.

In the past, this family had always been under Mo Junhua’s control. With a long-accumulated authority, everyone at home was afraid of his stern face. Now, Mo Junhua had grown even more formidable; he had been to the battlefield and killed men, his whole body emanated a deadly aura. Usually, he kept it under control, and ordinary people didn’t dare to look him in the eye. When he got angry, the deadly aura around him churned and surged outwards, as if he were a gigantic ferocious beast, looking around with a threatening glare.

Chunlai’s wife didn’t even dare to fart, holding her bowl to eat, nor did she dare bring up going back to her parents’ house again.

Chunlai dared even less to back up his wife. Both daughters-in-law, who married into the family, had been told by their own men before, never to go against the third brother, as the consequences would be severe. The two women didn’t take it seriously. Now, they knew the reason; this man was like a harbinger of doom.

The eldest sister-in-law closed her mouth, and Chunhua also slowly sat down to eat.

The whole family tried to be as inconspicuous as possible, like quail shrink, trying to diminish and lower their presence.

When Lan Tian arrived, this was the scene she encountered.

A room full of people was eating with expressions so uncomfortable, it was as though they were eating poison rather than rice, and they didn’t even dare to breathe heavily.

When Wang Guiyu saw Lan Tian arrive, she was relieved and eagerly pulled Lan Tian aside to ask questions, her enthusiasm overwhelming. The only person here who could instill fear in the entire family was Mo Junhua, her eyes drifting towards him, as if asking what outrageous thing he had done to anger heaven and men.

When Mo Junhua saw Lan Tian, his expression softened slightly, a flicker of a smile briefly appeared in his eyes as he glanced at his leg with an innocent and wronged look, "Look at me, what else could I have possibly done?"

The whole family was intimidated by Mo Junhua, and no one noticed the secret exchange of looks between the two. Mo Junhua finished his meal in a few bites, and Chunlai’s brothers carried him back to his room. Once he left, the family breathed a sigh of relief, the sight amusing Lan Tian.

Wang Guiyu followed into the room, watching at the side how Lan Tian removed the plaster. Neither of Chunlai’s brothers left, curious to see how Lan Tian would set the bone.

After Lan Tian took off the plaster and set it aside, she carefully examined Mo Junhua’s leg. The ointment she had applied the night before had mostly been absorbed, leaving behind brownish-gray stains.

"Auntie, please bring some warm water," Lan Tian said, checking the condition of Mo Junhua’s leg bones, while addressing Wang Guiyu who was beside her.

"Mother, you should go have your meal first, eating cold food is not good for your health. Big brother, second brother, go help get some warm water," said Mo Junhua. His family was all too timid to leave his side, and Mo Junhua tried hard to create a condition for him to be alone with Lan Tian, sending everyone in the family out.

Seeing she couldn’t be of any help by staying, Wang Guiyu left the ointment and went out to eat.

Your son’s presence is too imposing; even as his mother, I can’t bear it. Chunlai brought over the warm water, which was placed on a table by the side with a white cloth draped over the basin. After a glance at Mo Junhua’s leg, Chunlai left, leaving only Lan Tian and Mo Junhua in the room.

Lan Tian didn’t think too much of it, nor did she know what was on Mo Junhua’s mind. She soaked the white cloth in the water, filled it up, wrung it out halfway, and with gentle movements, wiped away the brownish-gray medicine stains on Mo Junhua’s leg.

They say that men who are serious about their work are fascinating, but women who are dedicated to their work can be just as captivating.
