Chapter 88 - 74_2
Chapter 88: 74_2
Of course, these weren’t things Lan Tian needed to worry about. She had to go with the flow. Since all her sisters called him "brother-in-law," she had to as well, otherwise people would say she was jealous.
"Brother-in-law!" After Lan Tian called out, she looked at the man. Calling someone brother-in-law wasn’t without its benefits, it implied there was a red packet waiting. When the future brother-in-law saw Lan Tian, a flash of admiration passed through his eyes. He hadn’t expected that among Yanhua’s sisters, there would be such an exquisitely beautiful girl, a rarity even in the big cities. He was so stunned that he didn’t respond when Lan Tian called him, until Yanhua tugged at his sleeve. Then he came back to his senses and took out a red packet for Lan Tian.
"Here!"
When Yanhua saw the man take out that red packet, her face stiffened for a moment, and then she quickly returned to her usual self, looking at Lan Tian with a beaming smile. Lan Tian took the red packet, stuffed it into her pocket, thanked him, and sat down to one side.
"Lan Tian, my brother-in-law is a real doctor from the city, incredibly skilled. Lots of people there seek him out for medical treatment, they even have to line up." This was said by Yanhua to her mother, and Yanhong overheard it. Looking at Lan Tian with sarcasm, "Unlike your uncle, who is just a barefoot doctor with no real skill. You won’t learn much from him. My sister said, he only makes you look at pictures all day. If you listen to me, I’ll ask my brother-in-law to teach you, how about that?"
Lan Tian still had a smile on her face, but her eyes were ice-cold. "That’s right, my uncle isn’t very skilled and he couldn’t dare to teach recklessly. Thankfully he didn’t lead my cousin astray before. Now it’s great, since brother-in-law is so skilled, you could learn from him and after becoming a doctor, you could all work at the county hospital. It should be a piece of cake for such a skilled brother-in-law."
Once Lan Tian finished speaking, many sisters in the family looked at her with hopeful eyes, but the man’s smile could hardly be maintained. It wasn’t his own hospital, he couldn’t just decide who got to be a doctor. Even if it were his own, it wasn’t something just anyone could get involved with.
Lan Tian, who was she? Yanhua, who had been around her for years, knew best. Petty, vengeful, unforgiving when in the right, and even when in the wrong, she managed to argue her case. She couldn’t tolerate anyone speaking ill of Second Grandmother, Uncle, and Fifth Aunt, and poor Yanhong had to go and badmouth Uncle and criticize his medical skills.
If his medical skills were so poor, could she work at the big county hospital? Dumb as a pig! Yanhua wished she could drag Yanhong away immediately. How could she, such a smart person, have such a stupid sister?
She was merely venting some frustration at home at the time, having forgotten what she said afterward. With so many things said, she only remembered these few words that the bratty girl added to her troubles. Yanhua quickly signaled to her mother with her eyes. Without understanding what had happened, her mother, after catching Yanhua’s cue, promptly dragged Yanhong away.
"Lan Tian, don’t mind her. You know Yanhong, she speaks without thinking. She’s young, she’ll learn better in a couple of years."
Lan Tian looked at Yanhua without speaking, her face calm, but her dark and deep eyes made Yanhua feel a chill. Lan Tian then said softly, "I am two years younger than Yanhong," and then she left the room.
It was clear what Lan Tian meant: she was even younger than Yanhong, so why didn’t she talk nonsense?
Facing the questioning looks from relatives and friends, Yanhua smiled apologetically, while inwardly cursing Lan Tian for not taking the face she was offered.
Whether Mo Yuanle’s medical skills were good or not, how could Yanhong, who didn’t even know herbs, know? She knew because someone in the family had said so, and besides Yanhua, who else in their family had learned medicine from Mo Yuanle? They shouldn’t take her for a fool. If it weren’t Fourth Grandpa’s birthday today, Lan Tian would be in for it.
No wonder the villagers called her an ingrate; the rumor wasn’t unfounded. Relying on her uncle’s medical skills and getting her job through her uncle, yet she talked bad about him behind his back. Lan Tian wondered what end Yanhua would meet.
Watching Lan Tian leave, Yanhua breathed a sigh of relief and let her heart settle down. She got what Lan Tian’s words meant. Saying that she said it – so what? Now she was working in the county town and didn’t need to pay attention to anyone. The man she was with was from the city, and soon, she would be too. There would be plenty of people coming to her for favors. Thinking of this, Yanhua revealed a bright and radiant smile, greeting the other sisters in the room.
Mo Yuanle was busy cooking in the back yard. The makeshift shack was low and narrow, filled with thick smoke and stinging chili fumes, causing the women tending the fire to cough continuously. Mo Yuanle, working in front of the pot, was sweating profusely as Grandma Sun and Zhao Li washed the vegetables next to him.
Lan Tian sneaked over to have a look. The pot contained stir-fried pork with tofu and bright red chili, which looked appetizing. The dish was nearly ready to be served. Seeing Lan Tian come over, he gave her some pieces of meat with the cooking spatula. Lan Tian didn’t mind the heat, took a bite, and inhaled sharply due to the heat, exclaiming, "Delicious, delicious!"
Tie Jun and Black Dog had seen Lan Tian coming and, seeing that she was in Fourth Grandpa’s house, did not go in to call her. They had been waiting outside, and when they saw her head for the back yard, they followed. Seeing Mo Yuanle feeding Lan Tian, they both dashed over for a share. Mo Yuanle fed them some meat too, and the three of them ran off, eating together.
Fourth Grandpa’s sons had really splurged this time, with a feast followed by a movie in the evening, making Fourth Grandpa feel very honored.
After the meal, the women in the family helped clean up the tables, wash the dishes, wipe the tables, and return the borrowed bowls and cutlery. Lan Tian ran off to the village with her friends to watch the movie crew set up. With several younger kids seeing Lan Tian running off, they followed suit, prompting the aunts in the yard washing dishes to curse behind them, though no one called the children back.
There were already a lot of people at the village’s threshing ground. When Lan Tian and her friends arrived, the men were already hanging the white screen, with a few others checking the alignment, giving pointers to the ones hanging it. Nearby, there was a crowd of adults and children gathered around the projector.
This was Lan Tian’s first time seeing such a device; she was very curious and, along with Tie Jun and Black Dog, circled the projector, trying to figure it out. Meanwhile, Shitou, who had just returned from school, joined them and began to nag Lan Tian for being indifferent, resulting in the trio almost deciding not to share their saved meat with him. Shitou stopped bugging Lan Tian when he heard that they had saved him some meat, and snuck off with Tie Jun and Black Dog to eat it.
