Chapter 87: 74

"Yanhua is back, and she’s brought a man with her. He’s well-dressed and handsome; by the looks of it, he must be a city dweller, from the same hospital as Yanhua, and it seems he’s a doctor. As soon as they arrived, she chatted with your Uncle’s wife in the back courtyard for a long time. Your aunt heard her mention that the man’s family is well-off, with officials in the household... They took an ox cart that came straight to the village, brought a whole lot of lavish presents, stuff we’ve never even seen before, your Uncle’s wife has really hit the jackpot this time." Grandma Sun finally exclaimed with a sigh.

Doctor?

The type of man she’s looking for is different from her past life; her ambitions seem to be getting higher and higher, which indeed seems to be her style. Lan Tian quietly listened, expressing no opinion and, after washing up, joined Grandma Sun for a meal at Fourth Grandpa’s place.

Customs in the countryside dictate that birthday meals happen in the afternoon, and the feast was set up at the Uncle’s wife’s house since Fourth Grandpa lives here. At this time, the first round of guests had already started eating, and the courtyard was bustling with noise. Lan Tian and Grandma Sun went to Fourth Grandpa’s room to wish him a happy birthday.

There were many people in Fourth Grandpa’s room, all cousins and siblings from the family. When Lan Tian came in, they glanced her way before turning their attention back. Unexpectedly, Hui Li was here; she hadn’t gone to school. Lan Tian was playing truant herself, and so had no ground to criticize anyone else.

Fourth Grandpa sat at the head of the main room, with Yanhua on his right, her cheeks pink with shyness like a new bride. Next to her was an unfamiliar man, stately-looking, around the age of Mo Junhua. Dressed in a light green Sun Yat-sen suit, his hair was slickly combed back and fixed with a thick layer of hair gel, his smile perfectly measured. Behind them was Yanhua’s younger sister, Yanhong, and the rest of her sisters.

The Uncle and his wife sat on the left, the Uncle cradling Yanhua’s little brother in his arms, with Yanhua’s elder brother beside them. The other uncles and aunts were not present, likely out helping. If it weren’t for Yanhua bringing a man home today, the Uncle and his wife would have been out helping too.

The smile on the Uncle’s wife’s face was even brighter than the sunshine outside, clearly showing how delighted she was today. Fourth Grandpa also had a rosy glow on his cheeks; it was unclear whether it was because of his birthday, or the joy of Yanhua finding a prospective city doctor son-in-law, or maybe a combination of both.

Lan Tian approached Fourth Grandpa and poured out good words like a stream, saying whatever sounded nice: "May your longevity compare to the South Mountain, like an evergreen pine, wishing you a lifespan as enduring as pine and cranes." She spoke such pleasing words that Fourth Grandpa was beaming with joy.

Once Lan Tian was done offering birthday wishes and Grandma Sun had gone out to help, Lan Tian was thinking of going out too, but Yanhua stopped her, "Lan Tian, come and have a good talk with me, it’s been such a long time since we sisters last saw each other."

It really had been quite some time. Since her trip to the county city, she hadn’t come back even for the New Year’s; it had almost been two years since they last met. People in the village gossiped about her behind her back, saying that the Uncle’s wife had raised her daughter in vain. Lan Tian didn’t know whether or not she was truly raised in vain, but it didn’t seem like they were close enough for a heart-to-heart talk. Lan Tian looked towards Grandma Sun, who after hearing Yanhua’s call, signaled her to stay.

Lan Tian also found the outside uproar tiresome, and it was more peaceful inside, especially since there was a city guest. Everyone wanted to leave a good impression on the visitor from the city, so they made sure their clothes were neat and tidy, and even their way of speaking was more gentle and soft, much to Lan Tian’s unfamiliarity.

Lan Tian wasn’t really a kid anymore, and the bashful timidity of a girl, wanting yet not daring to look, were complex emotions not to be found in her. She glanced at the man sitting beside Yanhua, who might become her brother-in-law and asked, "Cousin sister, he’s your beau, right?"

Yanhua’s face turned a deeper shade of red as she quickly glanced at the man and scowled at Lan Tian, who was looking down silently, not speaking. Who speaks like that? It’s too embarrassing! Although today’s significance of her bringing a man home was clear, and everyone understood, nobody would directly ask such a question. Lan Tian could tell from her reaction that this deal was as good as sealed.

Yanhong was twelve years old, understanding some things yet clueless about others. One couldn’t say she didn’t understand anything, as she was aware of many matters, but when it came to social affairs, she was even less savvy than Lan Tian from her past life. At least the old Lan Tian never spoke out of turn. Looking down slightly with her head held high, Yanhong spoke to Lan Tian with a hint of condescension, "Lan Tian, he’s our future brother-in-law from the city."

Of all the sisters in the family, Lan Tian was doing the best, even better than Hui Li. In the past, Hui Li had been doted on by Grandpa and the younger uncles; Yanhong wasn’t fond of her, and later, watching Lan Tian live like a pampered young lady without ever having washed a dish, while Hui Li still had to help with cooking at home, made Yanhong all the more disgruntled.

"My sister will marry into the city soon; you better call him brother-in-law too, we all have." There’s nothing to fear from an opponent who’s like a god, only from teammates who are like pigs. Before the marriage between Yanhua and the man was even settled, the sisters were already calling him brother-in-law. If the man didn’t end up marrying Yanhua, how would she ever find another match?
