Chapter 664: Chapter 664 Knowing Everything_1
A shadow of desolation flitted across Cheng Bingbing’s glamorous face.
So, it turns out that Huo Qilin knew everything.
And she was naively attempting to play him for a fool, thinking he was oblivious to the whole matter. Her attempt to shrug this off was indeed a product of her foolish imagination.
It always seems to be the case in the world that what we fear most is bound to happen.
She moved her lips, as if wanting to ask, "How did you find out?"
As far as she knew Xia Qingtian, he would never reveal anything that happened to her without her permission, even if the person he was talking to was, in Qingtian’s view, her boyfriend.
So if it wasn’t Qingtian who had told him, how did Huo Qilin come to know about it?
Huo Qilin hadn’t expected her to be concerned about this at such a crucial moment. Although it was somewhat unexpected, since she wanted to know, he obliged her.
"Tonight, when I couldn’t find you, I was worried you might be in danger. You are always on the film set, avoiding conflicts. The only people I could think of who would be likely to harm you were your parents," he confessed earnestly, "so I went to investigate them and found them, and then pried the truth from their mouths."
"So it was them," Cheng Bingbing muttered, revealing a hint of understanding in her voice.
How could she have forgotten about her own parents?
Having answered Cheng Bingbing’s question, Huo Qilin asked once again, "Now that I’ve told you everything you wanted to know, can you tell me why you lied to me tonight? Do you realize how worried I was?"
Cheng Bingbing’s lips moved slightly as she said quietly, "I’m sorry for worrying you, but if given another chance, I would do the same thing."
"Why?" Seeing her unrepentant and even audacious stance, Huo Qilin was anxious to know the reason.
"Heh, why?" Cheng Bingbing let out a light laugh, then her voice filled with loathing. "Because you don’t understand the depths to which a person can sink in shamelessness. My parents are such a disgraceful and selfish couple. If you get entangled with them, they will cling to you like leeches, sucking you dry. They are insatiable and will not stop until they’ve drained you of all your worth!"
"You and Xia Qingtian have been so kind to me, and I do not wish for either of you to get entangled with them. Besides, I feel ashamed, and I don’t want you to know how disgusting my parents are."
Some words, once out in the open, can never be put back.
It was as if she was venting, as well as voicing the grievances and injustices she had suffered over the years. "Do you remember that you once took me to the new property your family’s company was developing? I told you I didn’t like it, but in reality, I was lying. I loved it―absolutely adored it. But do you know why I didn’t tell you that?"
She went on in self-mockery, "Because I have no money. You may not believe it, but despite all the work I’ve done and the opportunities I’ve had in the entertainment industry, I am in fact penniless. I wouldn’t have been able to pay the down payment on that apartment, let alone buy it outright. Virtually every dime I’ve earned, I’ve given to that ungrateful couple."
"Yet, they were not satisfied. They squeezed me to the point of getting nothing more out of me, they then attempted to sell me off. If it were not for the good-hearted people who saved me, I shudder to think what would have become of me tonight."
Although she had been schemed against before―even by Shi Qian during the Hua Chicken Awards, a scheme that had resulted in her becoming pregnant―but none of that compared to the pain of being sold off by her own parents.
Despite her claim that she had lost all emotional connection with her parents, they were still her biological parents. Hence, deep down, she still could not sever the bond entirely. That’s why their latest scheming, involving selling her off to another man, was particularly painful for her.
Throughout her story, she wore an ironic smile on her face, but her stunning, peach blossom eyes soon filled with tears that fell freely as she spoke.
Seeing her tears, Huo Qilin felt as though he had been punched in the heart. The pain was overwhelming.
He desperately wanted to pull Cheng Bingbing into his arms for comfort, but he knew he lacked the entitlement to do so. So, all he could do was extend his hand and carefully wipe away the tears streaming down her face.
"Don’t cry," he said, his voice filled with determination. "If anyone tries to bully you again, tell me. I promise I won’t let anyone bully you ever again!"
It wasn’t until Huo Qilin had dried her tears that Cheng Bingbing realized she had been crying.
Having heard Huo Qilin speak, she was overcome by a profound surge of warmth and sweetness. However, she remained silent, offering no response.
Instinctively, Huo Qilin detected her silent protest against his offer.
"You don’t want that?" He frowned. "If something similar happens in future, would you still choose to bear it alone instead of telling me, allowing me to share the burden with you, wouldn’t you?"
It appeared as if he were asking Cheng Bingbing, but his tone was certain, as if he had already made up his mind.
"Yes!" Cheng Bingbing confirmed.
Feeling rejected, Huo Qilin muttered discontentedly, "Why?"
As I’ve said earlier, you and Xia Qingtian have been very kind to me, and are my best friends. Therefore, I don’t want to burden you both," Cheng Bingbing replied earnestly, pressing her lips together.
"Best friends?" Huo Qilin murmured.
"Yes." she nodded in agreement. "The best friends I could ever have. Friends whom I will never disappoint in this lifetime."
For some reason, Huo Qilin felt a sense of emptiness rather than happiness upon hearing her say this. It seemed that he was not content with merely being a friend, even if it was her best friend―he wanted more.
But what else could he be if not her best friend?
This sudden realization left him feeling utterly lost.
Seeing him suddenly fall silent, Cheng Bingbing thought it was because he was upset about her refusal. She reassured him, saying cautiously, "Don’t worry, I won’t let myself be taken advantage of or tricked like that anymore."
Her father and mother’s conduct had utterly severed the last thread of kinship she had held for them.
Hearing her words, Huo Qilin snapped back to reality.
Suppressing that strange feeling, he assured Cheng Bingbing, a touch of resoluteness in his voice, "Yes, you can count on me. I won’t let them bother you any longer."
