Chapter 600: Chapter 600: Not a Small Courage_1
After going through so much today, Xia Qingtian was already incredibly tired.
When she returned to her room, she didn’t rest immediately. Instead, she pulled out a scattered load of check pieces that Bo Jingyan had torn up, which she had picked up outside the restaurant, from her bag.
She sat on the floor, painstakingly putting the fragments back together, bit by bit, with glue.
Since Bo Jingyan had shredded the check into such tiny pieces, it was quite a challenge to piece them together.
Xia Qingtian’s eyes were turning red and her back was so stiff from fatigue that she found it hard to straighten up. However, she finally managed to piece the check back together and glued it securely.
Although the check was shattered and no bank would honor it, she still placed it into her safe as a cherished item.
After doing all of this, she fell collapsed onto the bed, drained, without even taking a shower.
...
The next day.
Xia Qingtian felt aching all over her body, especially her lower back, which was so painful that she gritted her teeth.
Despite the physical discomfort, she arrived at the company on time, ready to start the day’s work.
However, she noticed something strange about the atmosphere in the office as soon as she arrived. Several agents she ran into had the same downcast expressions.
Before she had a chance to ask what was going on, her assistant rushed to tell her that several investors had all come and were waiting for her in the meeting room.
Xia Qingtian frowned.
What a coincidence! Several investors all gathered at the same time?
Her sharp instincts honed from time in the business world made her realize that something unusual was happening. A sense of foreboding filled her heart.
Even though she guessed that their arrival might not be good news, she still had to face it.
Xia Qingtian told her assistant to go about her tasks, took a deep breath, put on an appropriate smile, pushed open the door of the meeting room, and greeted warmly, "What brings you all here today?"
"Madam Xia, we are here to discuss withdrawing our investment."
"So am I."
"We have decided not to invest!"
The investors didn’t beat around the bush. They directly stated their purpose for the visit in an assertive tone, leaving no room for negotiation.
Even though she had mentally prepared herself, Xia Qingtian’s smile froze for a moment.
"Is there any room for discussion on this matter?" she tried to negotiate, "Or if you’re not satisfied with the terms of cooperation, we can discuss further."
"There’s nothing to discuss; we’re here to withdraw our investments." One investor was particularly adamant, as if there was no room for further discussion on the matter.
The others said nothing, apparently in agreement.
Seeing that the talk couldn’t go anywhere, Xia Qingtian realized that begging won’t do any good and might instead become annoying.
But she still wasn’t willing to give up without understanding what was really going on, so she asked, "We had a good partnership before, why suddenly want to withdraw the investment?"
"Because you haven’t been able to bring in any other investors, and we don’t feel comfortable with this, so we’ve decided to withdraw our investment first."
Upon hearing these words, a spark ignited in Xia Qingtian’s eyes.
If this had been the time when she had just taken over the entertainment company, she might have been deceived by such explanations. But now, after she had been through the trials of the business world, she was no longer naive.
She would no longer simply believe whatever others told her.
It is not impossible that they would withdraw investment because she couldn’t bring in any more capital. However, it’s impossible that all the investors would come on the same day, at the same time, to demand a concerted withdrawal of their capital.
Moreover, they had the intention to withdraw their investments before, but she had previously managed to persuade them.
According to logic, such consideration wouldn’t likely to occur again in such a short period of time, unless something changed without her knowing.
At this point, Xia Qingtian’s expression turned serious, "If you tell me, I’ll agree to the withdrawal. If you’re still concealing something and unwilling to speak up, this withdrawal won’t be as simple as you think."
"What? You’re opposing it? You’re not allowing us to withdraw our investment?" an investor asked harshly.
Xia Qingtian chuckled, a smile that looked rather crafty and filled with schemes.
She didn’t beat around the bush and threatened directly, "I can’t stop you from withdrawing your investment. However, you did sign a contract when you invested. Withdrawing now would be a breach of contract, and if I wanted to, I could hold onto your investment and delay it indefinitely."
The investors’ faces darkened instantly. They had not expected Xia Qingtian, who had always been easy to deal with, to play hardball. Worse yet, they couldn’t do anything about it.
They exchanged glances, evidently considering their next move.
Xia Qingtian continued to guide the conversation gradually, "Is there someone behind the scenes instructing you all? You don’t want to say because you fear getting in trouble. I don’t need you to say it. If I’m right, nod your head. If I’m wrong, shake your head."
Since the conversation had gotten to this point and their money was in her hands, they would have to follow her terms if they wanted their money back.
"Hmm." In the end, they could only nod in agreement with Xia Qingtian’s speculation.
Xia Qingtian was known to be a person of her word. As the investors wished to withdraw, she couldn’t go against her principles. Business should always be conducted in good faith. If she were to hold these investors hostage for a few investments, it could ruin the reputation of their company.
No one would want to cooperate or invest with them in the future.
The current difficulties were just temporary, and once she solved these problems, she still wanted the company to continue to go public in the future. She could not just ruin her future prospects for the sake of immediate gains.
In the end, she agreed to the withdrawal, but it was not without conditions.
Just as she had previously stated, when the investors initially invested, they signed a contract to do so. Now that they suddenly wanted to withdraw their investment, it constituted a breach of contract, so they were required to pay a penalty.
That was the rule!
The investors were desperate to withdraw their investment at any cost, even if it meant paying a penalty.
Fortunately, Xia Qingtian’s entertainment company was a legitimate one. It wasn’t trying to get rich by relying on breach of contract penalties, so the penalty wasn’t too exorbitant.
The investors quickly paid up and left the entertainment company as fast as they could, as if fearing any association with Xia Qingtian would place them in an unfavorable position.
Once the investors left, Xia Qingtian’s previously maintained smile instantly disappeared, replaced by a serious expression.
She moved over to the window, looking down at the traffic through the transparent glass. Her mind was racing, trying to figure out who would go to such great lengths to target her.
Soon, a suspect came to her mind.
