Chapter 213: 194. Deeply Loved Scars

With this in mind, the following days became much more relaxed, and life seemed to return to normal!

After more than a month of resting at home and recuperating from her injuries, Ivy finally nursed her half-crippled body back to health. As the year came to an end, Michael was busier than ever with various conferences and public appearances.

During this time, Michael had communicated back and forth with Calvin countless times concerning their wedding. In the end, Calvin could only reluctantly agree. After all, the eldest granddaughter of the Gordon family had already been born, and it was improper for their offspring to be revealed to the public like this.

As the end of the year approached, the Legal Department became busier than ever. Sophia would often call Ivy to ask about her recovery and if she had returned to work yet. In her absence, everyone seemed to be circling around Alya, who was now responsible for all the physical tasks.

"Ivy, if you don’t come back to work soon, you won’t see me anymore. If I die, remember to burn some extra money for me!" Sophia said while sobbing on the phone, "Anyway, you got so much money from the car accident and workers’ compensation!"

Hearing this, Ivy was speechless: "Don’t worry, money is cheap. Even if there were no workers’ compensation, I could afford it!"

"So when are you coming back to work? If you don’t come back soon, I’ll be crushed by those people. In their eyes, Alya is the real Mrs. Gordon now!"

Sophia’s words were heartfelt. Those people had been fawning over Alya for a while now, and without Ivy around, she felt extremely isolated. Ever since news broke that Michael had used an ambulance to register for their marriage but no one had seen the bride’s face, almost everyone thought Alya was the woman in question.

Ambulance? Car accident? Fiancée?

Wasn’t that Alya?

Alya neither confirmed nor denied the rumors. When asked about it, she merely smiled and told everyone not to pry into their boss’s private affairs!

But wasn’t that tantamount to an admission of guilt?

"Ah, isn’t it great to have Mrs. Gordon leading the Legal Department?" Ivy couldn’t help but chuckle, "Don’t worry, I’m coming back to work today, so you won’t die!"

As she spoke, she hung up the phone, picked up her bag, and walked out of the bedroom, only to see Michael coming out of the study room. Seeing her dressed in professional attire, his brows furrowed: "You’ve just recovered from being half-crippled, and you’re already planning to go back to work?"

Ivy: "..."

Ivy would bet that his reaction was a form of revenge for her recent refusal of his advances. Ever since she had rejected his proposal to consummate their marriage, he had been more in control, not insisting on it. Although he occasionally tried to sneak into her bed for some cheap thrills, a few icy glares were enough to dispel any ideas he might have had. He had been staying in the study room ever since, but his frustration was obvious.

"Yeah, do I need to go to the company as Mrs. CEO and assert my authority?" Ivy shrugged. If she didn’t make an appearance soon, the other employees might start treating her like a second-class citizen compared to Alya.

Wouldn’t that be admitting defeat?

Michael: "..."

With her personality, even if she were an Empress, she wouldn’t be able to throw her weight around!

How could Michael be unaware of his wife’s true nature!

But even Lucas had said that her body had fully recovered, and she could do anything she wanted now!

If she wanted to go back to work, then so be it!

"Ivy..."

On the way to work, Michael suddenly called her name, seeming hesitant to speak his mind. This left Ivy puzzled, as it was quite unlike the straightforward and decisive Mr. Gordon she knew!

"What’s the matter?"

"This weekend, let’s take Bianca and go back to my family’s place," Michael said, focused on driving. "My father wants to meet you both and discuss setting a date for the wedding!"

The wedding?

Calvin had agreed?

Had Michael been going back and forth to his family all this time just for this?

"Alright, let’s go back together this weekend!"

They had been married for over a month, and she hadn’t even met her husband’s family yet. Michael felt somewhat guilty about this; after all, a woman marrying a man doesn’t just want his love and affection, but the acceptance of his entire family as well.

He knew this very well! That’s why he didn’t hastily reveal Ivy as Mrs. Gordon to the media. He wanted to do everything in his power to give her complete happiness!

"Okay!"

She and Michael had a child together and became husband and wife, so it was only natural for her to face his family. Marriage isn’t just about two people, but about two families!

So meeting Calvin would be her first step, as well as facing her stepmother, Risa Scott!

Like any ordinary daughter-in-law, Ivy felt a little nervous about meeting her in-laws. Fortunately, Michael had given her a heads-up, allowing her time to prepare!

First impressions are important, after all. Michael had tried his best to get Calvin’s approval, and now it was her turn to make an effort!

As soon as Michael stopped the car, Ivy dashed out and into the elevator like she had done before, deliberately keeping her distance from him. Of course, he was aware of her little plan.

Watching her hurry into the elevator, Michael shook his head with a bitter smile. If she was afraid that going up to the office together would attract gossip from the employees, how could she ever assert her authority as the CEO’s wife?

Truth be told, he would have loved for her to throw her weight around a bit. At least then, he could be sure that she truly cared for him!

But every time he admitted his feelings, she never reciprocated!

That day, when she asked, "What if I fall in love with you?", it made him joyful for an entire month. He’d already said "I love you" so many times, just waiting for her to say it once. But she never did!

The moment Ivy walked into the office, Sophia screamed, "Darling, you’ve finally come to save me! I’m about to die from exhaustion!"

During the time Ivy was on leave, nearly all the work had been dumped onto Sophia. Furthermore, Maria had given her all the document sorting tasks meant for Alya as a way to curry favor.

"Ahem, are you really going to exploit someone who just came back from the brink of death?" Ivy shrugged, then sat down at her desk. While helping Sophia sort through documents, she noticed a group of people chatting, "Aren’t there a lot of people free over there?"

"Please! Those are all the CEO’s wife’s minions, no one dares to order them around!" Sophia shook her head helplessly, "You’ve been gone for a month, and the office dynamics have completely changed. Other than me, everyone else is on Alya’s side. Ivy, I thought you said Michael was pursuing you? How come he ended up marrying Alya instead?"

"Ahem..." Ivy had just taken a sip of water when she heard this and nearly choked, "Who told you that Michael married Alya?"
