Chapter 114: Anira’s Journal Entries

Thinking about the Nightmare Difficulty Dungeon brought Long Haoran unpleasant memories.

Most of it was because of the journal entries in the little girl’s diary. While he was cooking, he made several mistakes, too affected by emotions, which resulted in his dishes’ rating of Cs.

[I was playing with Xiao Lou yesterday when we saw the village head heading somewhere while bringing cattle and goats. We followed him secretly and saw him enter a hole hidden under a resting hut located in the field planted with chumpet. He brought the animals inside. We didn’t stay any longer because Mommy made my favorite candied chumpet. It was so delicious and sweet!]

[The village did the same thing again, but this time it was two chickens. Is Uncle Village’s head planning to build a zoo underground? Mommy said that there is a zoo in the city filled with rare animals. I would like to go there someday.]

[We noticed Uncle Village Head on the same spot, and he was holding something gooey in his hands. It looks like the jelly one of the aunties gave, but the difference was that I saw it moving and snacking on feathers. It looks so fun that Xiao Lou and I wanted to play with it, but Uncle went inside the hole, and we were tired of waiting outside.]

[We found Uncle in the same place again, and he caught us peeking, but Uncle didn’t get angry and only told us to keep it a secret. He is so kind. He also gave Xiao Lou and me some candies he called chocolates from the city. It was so good, but Mommy’s candy is still the best!]

[I and Xiao Lou picked another spot to play. We played tag, hide, and seek when we heard Auntie Gu, who sells chickens, cry. We were curious and ran to her house. We saw many aunts and uncles surrounding Auntie Gu and comforting her. I and Xiao Lou didn’t stay too long because Mommy pulled me into the house.]

[Mommy won’t let me play outside! It was so boring inside the house! I can only stare at the cobwebs and the spiders weaving them. I wish I could see Xiao Lou.]

[Mommy won’t still let me play! She said it was dangerous. I asked her, and she only said that a strange man was abducting children, and Auntie Gu’s child was one of them. Another two children were missing this morning, and they were still searching. Mommy has forbidden me to let me out of the house ever since. Even if I played cute and blinked my eyes at Daddy, he wouldn’t agree either. They don’t love me anymore.]

[This day, Mom said Xiao Lou had sneaked outside the house and never came home. I waited all night for news, but they only saw his wooden slippers near the fields. I cried till dawn. Xiao Lou was my best friend, but he didn’t find me. Could it be that he played with another kid? Xiao Lou, I will ignore you from now on, Hmph!]

[Today, the village head called Dad and the other uncles early in the morning. Mommy and I were left at home. I asked her for candied chumpet, but Mommy said when the field recovers, she will make them again. Mommy didn’t really love me anymore. She always agrees when I ask! ]

[Daddy came back at night and talked to Mommy. I was listening behind the doors and overhead them talking about the food. I didn’t hear them clearly, and I became tired. I’m so tired that I went to bed. I will just ask mommy tomorrow.]

[Mommy made breakfast today, but she only cooked one vegetable dish, clear soup, and ate half a bowl of rice. When I asked where the braised meat was, Daddy said that the animals had all run away. I was sad, but I was hungry too, so before I cried, I ate. I hate chumpets, but if they turn into candy, I like them. This is the worst meal I had. I didn’t touch the vegetables, but Daddy said for me to grow like them so I can go out, I need to eat my vegetables. I ate them with struggle.]

[The entire week, it was all vegetables and clear soup. I was fed up eating them and snuck outside, but my mommy caught me when I was climbing the window. Daddy became angry upon knowing and spanked me. I was crying for the rest of the day. The neighbors must be crying too, because I could hear loud noises for the whole night. It’s just that they cried ugly. It hurts my ears.]

[In the middle of the night, while our neighbors were still crying ugly, Mommy and Daddy suddenly woke me up and put me inside the cellar. I asked them what was going on because I could hear them both crying, but I couldn’t see their faces clearly because the house had no light. Mommy and Daddy only placed some food, toys, jugs of water, blankets, clothes, and my notebook and pen before they climbed out, but not before warning me not to go out.]

When Long Haoran learned there was a cellar, he instantly gathered his things and ran back to the little girl’s house, searching for it. If there was a cellar, there should be wine, and he could use it.

Long Haoran continued to read the journal entries while running.

[I waited the entire night and never slept. I tried to go out, but I couldn’t push the door. I didn’t know how much time had passed or what day it was. The cellar was dark. I didn’t even know if my writing was ugly or not. I just missed Mommy and Daddy.]

[I heard a loud sound above. I tried to open the door, and it worked. I stuck my head out, and there I saw Mommy and Daddy standing, but they were covered in red and were scary with the holes in their bodies. I screamed out of fear, and they immediately rushed at me with their scary faces. I closed the door because I was scared.]

[Last night, I dreamed of nightmares. I don’t want to open the door again, but I also don’t want to be alone.]

Mommy and Daddy, can you please not scare Little Anira?]

[I don’t want to die in here. I’m hungry, but there’s no food.]

[There’s no more water.]

[I missed you.]

The journal entries kept getting shorter until he reached the last page. By this time, he had managed to find the cellar. It was inside the kitchen, facing the door to the living room.

Long Haoran took a deep breath before opening the door and what he saw made him lower his head and mutter a short prayer for the dead.

There, he saw the little girl leaning against the wall. Long Horan stayed above for a few moments before entering. He carefully gathered the remains of the little girl inside a blanket before burying her outside along with her toys and some of her clothes.

His heart was heavy all throughout, but he continued making Molotov cocktails out of the barrels of wine he found inside the cellar.

Long Zurui, who had read the diary sent by his brother, sniffed and cried while reading the little girl’s writing.

[Great Romantic Sage]: She is so pitiful. May her soul and the rest of the village people rest in peace. But, brother, what kind of boss did you meet?

[Dumpling Duke]: It looked like the vegetable I cook.

[Great Romantic Sage]: Vegetables can become Boss Monster too?

[Dumpling Duke]: Don’t look down it. It nearly killed me.

Long Haoran spoke in a grave tone, making his younger brother’s heart skipped a beat.
