Chapter 24: Ch 24: Unwanted Visitors - Part 1

There was a limit to how much one could talk in a day, and Anabella had limited stamina. The medicine in her system finally kicked in, and Anabella felt her eyes falling quicker.

She blinked, trying to stay awake, but it was useless.

A yawn escaped her mouth before Anabella quickly closed it to ensure no one noticed. But the two alphas were too observant (and focused on her) to let her get away with it.

"Looks like it’s too late. We should head out now and let you sleep. You need a lot of rest to recover and head home."

Clair spoke softly, and her eyes looked firm. It seemed like she would force Anabella to rest if the omega did not do it herself.

"Well, we should listen to the doctor here, Bella~ Otherwise, I am afraid that Clair might end up binding both of us up-"

"This is enough. I will check up on you tomorrow, Anabella. Have a nice sleep."

Clair dragged the taller alpha out of the room. The last thing Anabella saw of them was their retreating before she could no longer see anything.

It made her sigh, but she forgot about it and fell asleep. Just when she felt the sweet embrace of sleep gripping her arms, Anabella was jolted awake by a nagging feeling in her mind.

She first smelled that young alpha scent before her body caught up with her, and then she sat back up.

The door opened seconds later, and James entered the room with an awkward expression.

He was followed by a gentler Alpha scent belonging to her father-in-law, which relaxed Anabella.

"Did we disturb you by coming now? You look tired. Do you want to sleep? We can come back later."

Her father-in-law was an understanding man, and he understood what Anabella was going through to an extent.

He was sorry for trapping her in this marriage, but things happened faster than anticipated.

Before the alpha knew it, his son and Anabella had been tied in a marriage that no one wanted. (Except their mothers for corporate reasons)

"No, it’s fine. I was not about to fall asleep for another hour or so. Please, take a seat. Shall I help you-"

Anabella tried to push herself up and attend the duo, but she could not push her body up.

The medicine was messing her up and making her muscles softer than they were supposed to be.

This reddened Anabella, but she kept her cool and pretended nothing was wrong with her.

"No, please keep sitting! We are here to visit you because James wanted to check on you. There is no need for any formality between us. We are family..."

Maybe the older alpha did not hear what he was talking about, but his expression clarified that he considered Anabella’s family.

He might be the only one because his son and wife had clarified that Anabella was here just to fulfill the deal.

As for James...who knew that the young alpha thought.

He initially hated Anabella, but he slowly came around to her and even visited her in the hospital all alone.

Well, since you insist, I won’t sit up. But please do tell me if there is anything I can do to make your visit more comfortable."

Anabella was falling asleep even though she had said that. But she forced her body to stay awake and keep attending the pair.

Her behavior felt obsessive, making the duo in front of her uncomfortable.

"Stop pushing yourself like this and go to sleep. Do I need to show you how to relax? For god’s sake! One would think you would realize how to relax by now..."

James spoke harshly, but his expression softened when he saw Anabella’s struggling form.

It made Anabella laugh out loud, but she quickly assured the kid that she was not laughing at him.

Instead, she just found the situation to be a little humorous.

"I understand! I will rest and recover quickly. Now, care to tell me what else happened at school. Is everything fine in your life?"

Anabella asked the kid, and he made a reluctant expression when he looked at her. But the desire to speak to her and tell Anabella about his experience was too much for him to bear.

"W-Well, since you insist, I will tell you about my day. You better listen to me carefully."

The kid seemed to enjoy narrating his experiences, and Anabella let him speak as much as he wanted to. Her calm acceptance helped James open up more to her until he spoke as much as a normal person did.

’James has a healthy appetite for speaking this stuff! At first, I thought he was too overbearing and dark, but now I see that it was all an act! Kids truly are the best when they act their age.’

It was nice to see James so happy, and Anabella kept her smile on her face until the visiting hours were over.

"We will visit you again tomorrow if nothing else comes up. The doctor said that you can be discharged the day after tomorrow, so rest as much as you can."

Her father-in-law advised before he left with James. The dark silence of the room haunted Anabella, but it also helped her fall asleep quickly. Before she knew it, Anabella was out like a light, and she slept through the whole night.

The next day, she finally got the visitor she had dreamed of all this time—her stepmother. The older omega had finally decided to show herself, and she did not look happy.

’I better brace myself for more yelling. Or maybe I should pretend to be still asleep. I am sure that will work-’

"I know you are awake, so there is no point in pretending. Now, pull yourself out and let me look at you."

’Yup, there is no point in pretending to be asleep anymore. She knows that I am awake now.’
