Chapter 16: Ch 16: A call for help - Part 3

"Sir, your phone is ringing. Are you sure you do not want to pick it up?"

Daniel’s secretary asked as she saw her boss’s phone ringing non-stop.

She had seen the unsaved number, which she did not remember before. The secretary was hesitant to bring this up in front of her boss.

But when the phone rang for the third time, the female decided it was likely not a prank call and decided to speak to her boss about it.

As expected, Daniel’s face did not look happy to receive that call, but he did not try to be a dick and accepted that call gracefully.

"Show me who is calling..."

Daniel made a face but quickly picked up the call and forced his voice to sound happy. By the time he was done with that call, all that fake cheer had faded away from his face, and only a tried expression was left behind.

"Secretary, call my housekeeper and ask her to check up on my wife for me. Her mother complains that she is not answering the phone, which gives me a headache."

The alpha complained as he rubbed his forehead. He was sure his wife was playing a trick on him, and nothing was wrong with her.

But he had to do this formality since he could not be sure (and more so because his mother-in-law had asked him if she could call his father and mother next).

His secretary made a worried face, but she did as she was asked to. She quickly learned that nothing could be gained by going against her master.

"Of course, sir! I will make that call right now."

The beta secretary made a face behind her boss’s back before she dialed a number she hated.

The phone rang five times before the caretaker picked it up. When she answered, her tone was the most obnoxious the secretary had heard all week.

"Hello! What do you want? I don’t have time for useless things, so you better make it quick."

The caretaker was on working hours, and it was her work to keep in touch with Daniel’s secretary and keep her informed about what was happening back home.

Technically, the secretary was doing the caretaker’s work by asking her about the reports. And yet, the caretaker dared to talk like this to the secretary.

"Boss wants you to give him a report about the house. Madam is not picking up her phone. Have you seen her today?"

The secretary asked, more for the formality’s sake than to know the answer.

"Madam? Do we have a madam at home? As far as I know, the only madam of this house is dead. She died years ago, and I do not acknowledge anyone else as our madam. Now, I will cut the call."

When the secretary heard those words, her mind went blank with rage. Before she knew it, she slammed the phone on her desk, and her eyes were red.

"That bitch...how dare she..."

The secretary seethed before she realized what she had done. She immediately felt a stab of shame and regret at her behavior. She had not meant to make such a big mistake.

’Should I call back to ask? I would swallow my pride at that point, but it would be worth it...’

The secretary clutched her phone tightly and almost dialed the number when her boss walked past her.

"Did you call the caretaker and get the report?"

The alpha asked, and his pheromones surged in a way that was felt even by the beta.

The secretary clutched her throat, and she knew that the only way out of this situation was to lie about it.

"I...did call. The caretaker said that nothing was wrong."

It was not the truth, and the secretary knew she needed to tell her boss what she heard. But the thought of speaking to her boss and giving him disappointing news made the secretary feel like she was about to choke.

So, she chose to lie and take the easy way out.

"Tsk, I knew there was nothing wrong with that cunning omega. She acted like this only to have her mother bug me, knowing that I could not say ’no’ to her about anything.

Fine! If she’s going to be this stubborn, then she can take care of herself on her own. I will ask the caretaker that there is no need to come to work when I am James are not there."

Now, the secretary felt even more guilty. But she also knew that this would not change anything.

She had visited their boss’s house a few times after his marriage to get his paperwork, and she had noticed how the caretaker took full advantage of her boss’s absence to not do her work.

This decision her boss took would not change anything.

But the secretary would not throw her neck out and tell her boss that. She kept quiet and went about her work.

Work would make her forget everything bad that was happening. She did not have to remember her mistakes throughout the day.

...

Anabella opened her eyes and moved her body. She had fallen asleep for the third time in the past few hours, and her eyes hurt when she tried to keep them open.

Looking at the time, she realized it had been more than 24 hours since she last ate, and her stomach was growling.

But getting up tormented her until Anabella sank back on the bed.

She was about to fall asleep for a fifth time when James entered, opening the door to her room.

He looked angry and concerned but, most of all, surprised to see Anabella home.

"You were home? Why did you not come down to eat with me? Hey, are you listening..."

The kid finally had his first look at Anabella and cringed when he noticed her deadly pale complexion.

"W-What happened to you? Are you sick? This is not good. We need to get you to a doctor as soon as possible."
