Chapter 30: The Oriole Behind the Mantis and Cicada
Chapter 30: The Oriole Behind the Mantis and Cicada
Emma and her friends were still taking in their new reality. And they took it really badly. This was the first time they had been so humiliated in their life.
"My mom’s going to kill me once she finds out..." Trisha murmured as they stepped out of the mall. Her pretty face glistened with sweat after pushing through the crowd in front of the store.
Hearing the word ’mom’ only made Emma feel even more bitter. Her mother was obsessed with shopping at that store, calling it a haven for all wealthy wives.
Now that her mother could no longer shop there, Emma feared that her mother would cut off her allowance this month.
With all that money gone, how can she still play outside with her friends?
Emma turned to Sophie and said, "Why aren’t you speaking? Ah, are you perhaps feeling guilty that this happened all because of you?"
Sophie flinched at the scathing remark Emma shot her way. But she didn’t acknowledge taking the blame this time.
"Why would I feel guilty? Didn’t we do all those things together? Why are you only blaming me?" Sophie said while puffing her chest.
"Together?" Emma thought she heard the most ridiculous joke of the year. But instead of laughing, she felt insulted. "Don’t lump us together with you. Did you really think you’re one of us because we hang out with you? Sophie, have you smelled yourself? You reek of poverty just like that saleslady back there!"
Sophie gritted her teeth when she heard this. Her eyes turned bloodshot as tears started to fill her eyes. But as proud as she was, she dared not to break down in front of Emma and Trisha.
"Then, why did you let me stay beside you? Are you telling me you’re not my friend?"
Emma and Trisha exchanged glances before laughing.
"Friends?" Trisha repeated. "Oh my God, you really think you’re our friend?"
Emma added, "Don’t take yourself too seriously. You’re just servant number 2. If you’re curious to know who is number 1... you already should know who it is."
Sophie stared at them, speechless at their response. Were they still the same girls who took her to many parties and hangouts?
Sophie met Emma and Trisha back in her freshman year in high school. Her father had just started gaining his foothold in the business industry. But his position was slowly climbing up the social circle. One could say they were nouveau riche.
She was aware of how many people laughed at her and her father for having no wealthy roots. However, Sophie was proud of her father’s progress. She even started to covet the lives of the girls she saw in some high-class parties. So, she convinced her father to enroll her in the same academy they go to.
Her school life was, however, not smooth. Sophie was bullied. But it was Trisha and Emma who took her as friends.
Or so she thought.
All along, Emma and Trisha thought of her as nothing but a servant!
"So, we’re not friends?"
Emma shrugged. "Never was. But don’t be too heartbroken. Isn’t being servant number 2 for both of us a great honor? Ah, by the way, I heard your father secured a huge project this year. Can you ask him to restore our membership?"
Trisha snickered beside her.
Clenching her teeth, Sophie couldn’t take it any longer.
Releasing a scream, Sophie didn’t mind that someone could hear her as she flew in rage and grabbed both Emma’s and Trisha’s hair.
"Ah!"
"Let go! What do you think are you doing?"
Emma and Trisha felt a burning pain shoot through their scalp. They tried to pry Sophie’s hands away from their hair, but it was of no use.
Sophie grew up in a middle-class family. She wasn’t new to brawls like this. And she would never back down to a catfight, either!
Of course, she knew that Emma and Trisha had never been to a fight. So, they were at a disadvantage!
"Since you two are so close and friends with each other, it’s okay if I beat you up both, right?!" Sophie was in glee as she made them suffer. "Emma, you don’t know this, but Trisha kissed your boyfriend yesterday!"
"WHAT?!" Emma exclaimed. But she couldn’t continue speaking as Sophie gripped her hair tightly.
"Don’t believe what she said! She’s trying to put a strain on our friendship!" Trisha sweated out as she didn’t think Sophie would reveal this right now!
Sophie snorted. "What friendship? Do friends write up bad rumors about their friends? What do you think, Emma?"
The fight soon turned from 2v1 to a one-on-one. Each of them turned their back on each other as Sophie exposed their dirty little secrets.
But they wouldn’t have done this if they were in public.
Fortunately, before they started their fight, they were on their way to their car. No one was in sight either inside the parking lot.
Thus, they soon revealed their real selves.
However, what these three girls didn’t know was that behind a pillar, the saleslady whom they were bullying and beating up earlier was now recording their nasty fight using her phone.
Earlier, she became bloodied with scratches all over her face. Yet, no one had tried to help her.
What was even worse was that due to what happened, she lost her job and had to leave looking like a mess.
There was nothing she could do. The store manager placed all the fault on her when the headquarters asked what had happened. The headquarters also didn’t investigate and terminated her contract.
It was unfair! Why was she the only one who had to suffer the most?
Fortunately, she thought of using the back exit of the shopping mall to hide her face, and she came across a good show!
What a good show, indeed!
Heh, these girls didn’t know, but they will soon become a star.
The saleslady captured every second of the fight and was cautious they would see her.
She was so focused on the fight that she didn’t sense someone was already behind her and was also watching the scene.
Lucy had been at this spot since the moment Emma, Sophie, and Trisha came out of the shopping mall. She followed them but didn’t expect she wasn’t the only one who found their situation entertaining.
