Chapter 27: Pettiness
Chapter 27: Pettiness
"Emma, what do you think of this dress?" a feminine voice came from the side.
Standing on a raised platform was a saleslady wearing a pink dress. Her figure was slim and tall, but the curves around the right spots were a bit lacking.
Raising her head from her phone, Emma looked at the saleslady for a few seconds before asking disgustingly, "Where did you get that dress? Are you trying to parade yourself as Barbie?"
Emma flicked her hair behind her back and pointed at a pantsuit hanging on the side. "Get that for me and have her wear it next."
The saleslady stepped down from the platform with an embarrassed look and followed the store manager inside the dressing room. No one would have expected she would have to play as a clothing model for a customer when she applied for the job.
But there was nothing she or the other salesladies could do.
The world catered to service the rich and make the lives of the poor miserable. If not, even more just for the sake of entertaining the disgustingly wealthy people.
"Manager, I can’t do this anymore. This is already the tenth dress!" the saleslady said once they entered the dressing room.
"Just bear with it. When they buy the clothes, I’ll give you extra commission."
It was meant to comfort the saleslady.
But this was something she couldn’t just endure! How many times was this? This has been going on for 3 months now. And she heard that the previous saleslady before her quit because they didn’t want to continue being treated like slaves.
"Anyway, just wear this. If they buy it, I’ll treat you later."
The manager left the dressing room.
As she reentered the store, she saw the 3 ladies still sitting cozily in one of the store’s lounge seats for customers. They busily engaged in gossip and laughing at each other.
These ladies were the store’s frequent customers. But they previously didn’t require the store salesladies to model the clothes. If the manager remembered correctly, there was a fourth member in their group who was forced to do it in the past.
"Excuse me, are you busy right now?" a low, soft voice entered the manager’s ears.
When she turned around, a beautiful woman stood before her. The tinted glasses veiled her eyes and her palm-sized face was adorable to look at.
The tired look on the manager’s face was lifted, and she subconsciously wore a bright and genuine smile. "No, is there something I can do for you?"
"I’m looking for clothes to buy. But I’m not sure what should I pick," Lucy said with a smile. "Can you help me?"
The manager eagerly nodded. She wasn’t doing this just because she thought the woman in front of her was a great beauty, but because the jewelry on Lucy was all a product of a high-end jewelry brand that was known for being too expensive!
Being in the fashion industry for years, the manager couldn’t possibly mistake a fake for real.
So, she obviously didn’t doubt that Lucy was a filthy rich woman!
Though, it was strange that she was getting an oddly familiar vibe from Lucy.
"Is there any style you prefer?" the manager waved away this thought and led Lucy to a line of S-class dresses.
Lucy looked at the dresses, but her attention was on Emma and her little friends, who were oblivious to her presence.
As their voices got louder, even the manager was distracted and was upset by how rude they were.
They may be loyal customers, but this isn’t their home!
"Miss, you can ignore them. They’re still young girls, so they don’t know anything."
Girls?
Lucy’s gaze darted towards Emma and her group.
When she married Landon, Emma was still in senior high school. Her behavior might’ve been excused for being immature and cute, but Lucy suffered greatly because she also thought that Emma was too young to understand the works of adults.
But three years have gone by already. Emma should’ve entered adulthood and society. Will people still have to pardon her for her mistakes because she’s just younger in age?
Just so she could play the perfect wife of Landon, Lucy accepted any mistreatment Emma tossed her way. She thought that they would gradually become closer since Lucy was the wife of her older brother. Emma was dissatisfied because having a sister-in-law suddenly was new to her.
Who knew Emma was not only dissatisfied with having Lucy as her sister-in-law and stealing her older brother from Yvonne?
In truth, Emma felt inferior to Lucy.
"No, wait..." A mischievous gleam flashed across Lucy’s eyes. "I want what they’re buying."
The manager was surprised by her choice, before schooling her expression. She then said, "I apologize, Miss. But the store only has one copy of each clothes we sell."
They weren’t just a random clothing store inside a shopping mall; they got priority in selling luxury brands once it’s been released.
"That’s unfortunate. I just got a new closet and planned to fill it with clothes I will buy today. I guess I can only go somewhere else." Lucy sighed.
She turned around to leave.
Inwardly, she was counting.
At this point, the manager caught the hint. Clothes. Unlike the 3 ladies inside, this woman wanted to buy a lot of their store’s clothes. Just how much commission would she get if she sold them today?!
But will it be okay to offend the store’s loyal customers?
Lucy was about a few feet away from the store’s glass door. Her count also hit three when the manager stopped her.
"Wait!" the manager hurriedly blocked Lucy’s way. "Do you perhaps know the ladies in the back?"
The manager was suspicious of Lucy’s intentions. She wasn’t new to rifts between the ladies in the upper class. She had witnessed different levels of pettiness multiple times. Compared to losing the trust of loyal customers, it would be better to let Lucy go.
But Lucy knew greediness had already taken root inside the manager’s heart.
She fixed her eyes on the store manager and said, "Of course not. I only thought the dresses they chose were all stunning and couldn’t help but want them."
"If you still have doubts, I’ll buy ten more dresses apart from the ones they picked," Lucy added.
***
Emma and her friends didn’t have a clue that the dresses they planned to buy were all taken already as they continued gossiping about each other.
They only noticed something was wrong when the saleslady Emma ordered to wear the pantsuit come out of the dressing room wearing the store’s uniform.
"Why are you not wearing the pantsuits I told you to wear?" Emma asked, her voice was tinged with anger.
The saleslady was slightly afraid of her, but she replied, "I can’t wear it."
"Are you kidding me? I told you to wear it, so wear it! Do you want to be fired that badly?"
Emma was itching to slap the saleslady. How dare she try to go against her order?
But the reply that the saleslady would give her would shock her even more.
"I really can’t wear them. They’ve already been bought!"
