Chapter 21: Tell Me What Do You See?
Lucy didn’t know how many times she frequently went back to having consciousness and letting the darkness take her. And when she finally had the will to wake up, Vanessa was no longer beside her.
While awake, she tried to gather her thoughts despite the fog in her mind.
But every time she closed her eyes, the thought of what could have been if her babies were still alive haunted her, and it never fails to break her heart into shards.
Life was never easy for her. When Lucy was ten, her father abandoned them and never returned, leaving her and her mother to fend for themselves. Her mother, who was just in her middle twenties, and could have started a new life without her daughter, stayed behind. The two of them worked hand in hand to fight against the odds of living longer in this world.
Sadly, her mother was never destined for a long life.
Lucy’s mother died and left her alone. Lucy then started to live, albeit within a glass mask that she willingly accepted at a price. Too bad she couldn’t escape the curse that had been passed down their family’s history, and she, too, had cancer.
But a blessing in disguise appeared.
Or so, Lucy thought her babies were.
They were her miracle. Her hope. Her reason.
They were her everything.
Who would have thought two beings were growing inside her the day she divorced the man she loved?
Yet, as if the world were pulling a joke on her, they also took them from her.
So, can somebody tell her... Was her life still worth living?
"Her condition isn’t completely stable yet. Right now, we can only hope she’ll receive counseling first before being released from the hospital."
"Will that work, doctor?"
As she sat in a daze, the two voices gradually became louder as they approached Lucy’s ward.
"Honestly, everything is in Miss Grey’s hands. You should try convincing her to get counseling."
Vanessa thanked the doctor and stood outside the door for a minute. She contemplated what the doctor had just said and thought of telling Lucy about it.
On the day Lucy was hospitalized, Vanessa had just landed in the city. She wanted to surprise her friend with her arrival. The two hadn’t seen each other for five months, and she missed Lucy so much that she didn’t tell her about her plans of coming to Auromont.
However, Vanessa didn’t expect to receive a call that Lucy would be at the hospital and in critical condition.
But what made her heart sink was she had to find out about Lucy’s pregnancy when the doctors had already started their operation!
She was mad that Lucy hid it from her. But she was even more frustrated at herself for not being beside her best friend.
Now, she had to watch Lucy come apart from her real self.
Pushing the door open, Vanessa didn’t expect her to be awake already. Did Lucy hear what she and the doctor were talking about?
"How are you feeling?" Vanessa started.
When Lucy didn’t respond, she didn’t mind it one bit.
"You’ve been asleep for two days. I bet you’re hungry!" Vanessa clapped her hands and added, "Why don’t we order something you like?"
"I’m not hungry," Lucy bleakly answered.
Vanessa didn’t give up. "Well, I am! And I’m going to get fried chicken and pizza. The weather is great, so I think we can go and eat outside!"
She took out her phone and started typing. Meanwhile, Lucy stared at her as if she were going crazy.
Vanessa should know what she was feeling right now. So, why insist? Lucy couldn’t understand why her friend was doing all this.
Lucy pulled on the blanket and covered herself with it. She said dismissively, "You can go by yourself. I want to be alone."
However, Vanessa didn’t leave her alone as she wanted. Instead, her friend dared to take the blanket from her and pull Lucy out of the bed.
"What are you doing?" Lucy glared at her.
"You’ve been in this room for three days. You need some fresh air."
"I don’t need fresh air! Let go!"
What she needed was for everything to be gone. Her memories, her pain, and even her entire existence. Then, all would be fine.
She wouldn’t think of her foolishly loving a man who can never be hers. She wouldn’t remember her babies, who were ruthlessly taken from her. And Lucy wouldn’t feel the hollow growing inside her and eating her away like a parasitic worm.
Lucy struggled to pull away from Vanessa, who took each step towards the door. But she was not fully recovered, and thus, the amount of strength she could gather in her body was incomparable to her.
Knowing Vanessa, she wouldn’t give up on something when she had already decided on it.
"Trust me, Lucy, you won’t regret coming with me."
Lucy didn’t want to go anywhere, but something inside her felt compelled to follow Vanessa.
Of course, if Vanessa pushed her into counseling or therapy, she would adamantly refuse. No amount of therapy or sessions with a psychologist can ever heal the wound inside her heart.
And Lucy was sure even if Landon came to her right now, she wouldn’t appreciate it. Instead, she would learn to loathe him to her core and wish she never knew him.
Vanessa kept talking to her about the things that happened these past two days when she was unconscious. Lucy didn’t try to keep up with her as her mind flew back to the first time she went to the hospital with her mother.
They kept walking and walking. Vanessa told Lucy she would take them outside for fresh air. But the moment they stepped into another building; Lucy became apprehensive.
Still, she didn’t stop following Vanessa, as the building didn’t look like it was meant for patients who needed therapy and counseling.
Rather, it looked... It looked like many patients they had passed by were women who had just given birth.
Feeling upset that Vanessa was showing this to her right after she lost her babies, Lucy halted her steps. She balled her hands into fists, and her eyes reddened.
The more she looked at the happy mothers, the more torn she felt.
She could have been one of them.
But at that moment, Vanessa also stopped and looked at her.
"We’re here."
Lucy’s brows knitted together in anger and confusion. What does she mean by that? She looked around and only found glass windows on the walls. She didn’t miss the words written on top of the door.
They were in the NICU.
And the exact spot they were in was where infants were being incubated.
Vanessa rested her hands on Lucy’s shoulders, maneuvering her to move closer to a glass window.
Then she said while pointing in one direction.
"Tell me what you see, Lucy."
At once, Lucy forgot to breathe.
