Chapter 20: Removal Operation
"Mom!"
Luciano stood up when his mother entered the clinic. His hands shook because he had to run for ten minutes without resting while carrying an unconscious Lucy.
"What happened?" Mrs. Baker asked her son. "Is she okay?"
At this moment, the door opened and the town’s doctor came out. Seeing Mrs. Baker with her son, he released a sigh of relief and said, "Samantha, I’m glad you’re here. I need to discuss something with you."
The doctor gestured for Mrs. Baker to follow him.
Once they were in a corner, the doctor told her, "Miss Grey’s condition isn’t great. Actually, it’s a bit fatal. We need to take her to a bigger hospital."
"What? But it would take us two hours to get there!" Mrs. Baker was a bit helpless. "Can’t you do it? You’re the town’s doctor."
The doctor shook his head.
He was just a town doctor who received his certificates as soon as he graduated. Lucy’s condition was not just something he could do something about, as it was more complicated than he thought.
After discussing, Mrs. Baker and the doctor agreed to take Lucy to a bigger hospital, where she could get better treatment.
Two hours later, they arrived at the city hospital.
Fortunately, there weren’t many emergencies, so they were prioritized, and the doctor knew someone there. However, the attending doctor was shocked when they pulled out Lucy’s health condition.
"We need to operate on her immediately!" the attending doctor announced. "The cancer inside her has already spread out, and she’ll die if she doesn’t remove her uterus!"
Hearing this, Mrs. Baker stopped the doctor. "But she’s pregnant!"
"There’s nothing we can do about it. Either we get rid of the children or let them all die."
Mrs. Baker blanched at once. "W-wait, children?!"
She had never heard of this!
Mrs. Baker thought Lucy was having one child, but children?
"How many is it?"
"Twins."
...
Beep, beep, beep.
The rhythmic sound of a machine entered her ears as Lucy gradually recovered her consciousness. Her eyes were still closed, but they moved restlessly behind her lids as if she were having a nightmare.
Soon, her eyes fluttered open, but the strong lights coming from above made her squint immediately. Lucy wondered where she was. Was she in heaven? Is that where the light was coming from?
Well, it didn’t matter where. This place seemed so peaceful and painless.
Lucy’s eyes slowly closed again, but suddenly, the sound of people talking woke her.
Wait...
"The patient’s waking up!" someone said from somewhere close, but Lucy couldn’t pinpoint where they were.
"Increase the anesthesia. We will start the removal of the babies and uterus."
Someone commanded inside the room. And at once, Lucy realized where she was and what order was being barked.
She struggled to move, but her body refused to listen to her.
Don’t! Please, don’t do it!
She screamed inside her mind. If she loses her children, then nothing in this world will make it worthwhile to live for.
They were her only hope and reason for living. She didn’t even get treatment for her cancer just so they could live. If they take her babies away, how would she accept it? How would she live?!
Landon, please... do something! They’re taking our babies away!
Lucy pleaded inside. Someone. Anyone. Even the man who had made her suffer like this. She would do anything for as long as she could save her babies!
But no one heard her.
And as she fought back against everything, the deep void returned. Slowly and gradually devouring her entire existence.
Lucy woke up the second time.
Gone was the light that made her blind and the annoying sound of beeping. However, what replaced it was walls painted white and a bed where she lay. A window on her right allowed her to see the bright weather and how long she had been asleep.
Lucy turned in the opposite direction as a sound rattled and stole her attention.
The door to the room was wide open, and in the middle of it was her best friend, Vanessa, whom she hadn’t seen for the past five months.
"You... you’re awake." Vanessa’s eyes widened for a second before tears filled them. Her sadness was contagious as Lucy turned away from her, hiding the tears from her eyes.
Vanessa held back the words she wanted to say and sat on the bed. "Why didn’t you tell me? I could’ve been here taking care of you."
Lucy closed her eyes guiltily. When she received the news that she was pregnant, she didn’t tell a soul about it. It was not that she didn’t trust her best friend. Vanessa was the only one who was there for her through it all.
But she didn’t want Vanessa to know about it. Her best friend did not have to mourn for her and her babies if her cancer ate her alive. If she remained unaware of her pregnancy, she would only mourn Lucy and not the three of them.
Yet, she was alive.
That could only mean...
Lucy broke down instantly. "My babies... they’re gone, right?"
She was awake when the operation was just starting. She heard the doctors talk.
They took her uterus and babies away.
"Vanessa, my babies... they were inside me just before I fell asleep. Now... now, they’re..." Lucy felt as if a thousand knives were stabbing her heart. She couldn’t even finish her words. "How can I live now?"
"Lucy, listen to me." Vanessa grabbed her hands and looked straight into her eyes. "The doctors did everything to save you."
"But I don’t want to be saved!" Lucy screamed. "I’m already dying. They should’ve just let me die with my babies. Why did they have to save me? Without them... without them, Vanessa... I’m broken."
Vanessa pulled her into a tight embrace, but Lucy broke away from her.
She pulled out the intravenous drip attached to her arm and struggled to get out of bed. Vanessa was panicking beside her, reaching for her, but Lucy couldn’t hear anything.
Her eyes rolled to the back of her head as soon as her feet hit the ground.
Once again, the void claimed her.
This time, Lucy accepted it, hoping it would take her forever.
