The Billionaire's Ex-Wife Returns! -
Chapter 22: Sweet Angel
Chapter 22: Sweet Angel
Behind the glass door was an incubator where an infant lay with closed eyes. The nurse beside it waved at Lucy and mouthed some words. But Lucy couldn’t even bother to figure out what she was saying as she couldn’t believe her eyes.
She hurriedly turned to Vanessa as tears gathered in her eyes. Her hands shook as she sought verification of her suspicion.
When Vanessa nodded to confirm the unsaid words, Lucy lost it. She pressed herself on the glass, feeling its cold and hard surface. She wished it would disappear so she could touch the baby.
Tears fell from her eyes, and her lips shook as she fought to speak.
"Is that... is that really my baby?" Lucy whimpered.
Vanessa nodded, crying with her. "Yes, Lucy."
Her legs suddenly lost their strength to continue standing. With Vanessa supporting her by the arm, Lucy looked at her child inside the incubator.
"Calm down," Vanessa said as she pulled up Lucy.
"That’s right... Why is there only one?" Lucy noticed something was wrong, and the joy she felt just now was blocked. A horrible premonition entered her mind, which she quickly turned away. "Where’s the other one? I clearly remembered I should’ve given birth to twins, Vanessa."
Vanessa lowered her head with a grim look on her face. Although Lucy already had the answer to her question, she couldn’t wrap her mind around it.
"Vanessa, why aren’t you speaking? Where’s my other baby?"
"Lucy, calm down first. I have to tell you something, but don’t panic."
But she was already feeling horrible inside.
She grabbed Vanessa’s arm and anxiously said, "Vanessa, please just tell me the truth!"
Seeing her trembling like a leaf, Vanessa knew that Lucy was starting to have a meltdown once again. She couldn’t have her friend collapse again, so she brought Lucy to a bench nearby.
Once they were seated, Vanessa didn’t speak immediately and let Lucy calm down a bit. Then, once Lucy was no longer panicking, she finally told her what had happened two days ago.
On the day Lucy was being operated on, Vanessa arrived in time to hear what the doctors were going to do to her. As soon as she heard they would remove both her uterus and babies from Lucy’s body, Vanessa was quick to stop their plans.
Even though Vanessa wanted Lucy to survive and she would choose her best friend over anything, she understood that Lucy wanted her children to survive no matter what. And Lucy would hate her forever if she took that choice away from her.
Thus, against all odds and taking the risk of making a scene at the hospital, Vanessa pleaded for them to save Lucy and her children.
It was fortunate that a doctor who was listening to Vanessa’s cries stopped the operation on Lucy before they could get started.
But because the cancer inside Lucy was rapidly spreading out in an alarming state, the operation could not be postponed.
"The doctor who helped me said he’d save you and the babies. He kept his promise... but the risk was too high and only one of the babies survived."
Vanessa paused long enough for Lucy to take all her words in.
And when Lucy did not respond, she continued, "You had two operations, Lucy. They had to take your uterus and ovaries because they wouldn’t function anymore and if they stayed inside you, you would’ve died... I can’t have that. I can’t let you die."
Lucy listened to her for a long time.
A piece of her heart cracked as she thought of the child whom she had just lost. She wanted to scream so badly and despair over the loss of her child, but she held it in.
"Can you..." Lucy released a shaky breath. "Can I see my baby?"
Vanessa looked at her and nodded as tears dropped down her cheeks.
...
A month later.
Lucy was released from the hospital a week after she found out one of her children had survived.
Now she was resting in the house Vanessa had bought for the two of them in the city. Meanwhile, the baby had to stay in the NICU for one more week.
During this month, Lucy had come to terms with her son’s passing. That’s right. She gave birth to twins. A boy and a girl, a lovely pair of twins.
A funeral was arranged for her baby. It was quick but all the more torturous since she couldn’t spend time with her baby boy. She named her sweet little boy Luca Grey.
As for the little girl, Lucy named her Adeline Grey.
Her days weren’t spent leisurely. As she was still recovering, Lucy could not continue her work. Mrs. Bakers did not force her either and even told Lucy not to worry about work since Luciano had started to help her in the restaurant.
Vanessa also scolded her for trying to help with the household chores, saying that Lucy needed all her strength when her baby girl finally arrived.
With everyone stopping her from doing anything, Lucy could only read books Vanessa bought for her to read. She couldn’t even use the TV or phone because Vanessa was acting like an angry, controlling mom towards her.
But it was due to this that Lucy didn’t have to see anything related to Landon.
"Lucy!" Vanessa shouted from outside the room. "Come down for a second!"
Putting down the book she was reading, Lucy got out of the room and saw Vanessa carrying a cardboard box in her arms.
Tilting her head, Lucy asked her, "What is that?"
Vanessa grinned. "Open it first."
Curious about what her friend had brought her, Lucy took the box Vanessa handed to her. She placed it on the table and opened the box.
A painting brush, paints, and other painting tools lay inside it.
"No way!" Lucy exclaimed in delight.
She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in fine arts and design. It had been Lucy’s dream to capture the world through her eyes and let people see it. But after her mother died, Lucy had to stop and give up her dream.
But Vanessa never forgot about it.
Vanessa watched as Lucy stared in awe at the things she bought for her with a smile on her lips.
Patting Lucy’s back, Vanessa told her, "Now, you can paint as much as you can!"
Lucy nodded happily. She wanted to paint a portrait of her son so he would know she would never forget him!
...
At the same time.
Landon stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling window of his office, giving him a wide view of the outside world. As the moonlight framed him in a silvery halo, he looked solemnly and remarkably.
But the chillingly cold pressure wrapped around his body ruined the beautiful scene.
He appeared like a tall mountain, isolated and intimidating.
Behind him were men who dared not to speak a word. Even taking a short and quick breath was a trigger for them to receive Landon’s ire.
"It’s been a month. Why is there still no news about my wife’s whereabouts?"
The men winced at his deep voice. It sounded heavenly in the ears, yet why did they feel like they were hovering seven feet from their grave?
