Chapter 19: To The Clinic!
Chapter 19: To The Clinic!
Five months later.
"Miss Grey, it’s time to close up the store. Do you want me to drive you to your house?" Mrs. Baker kindly offered her a ride, which Lucy regrettably rejected.
"Sorry, Mrs. Baker, I think I’ll stay a bit longer." Lucy motioned her hands towards the mess on the floor and smiled awkwardly. "I still have much to clean up."
Mrs. Baker sighed. "You know, you can clean that tomorrow, or I can tell my son to do it. You need to rest."
Lucy thought of Mrs. Baker’s son, Luciano, who was a high school student. The offer was tempting, but she couldn’t bother someone with anything right now. Especially, a young boy who would prefer to hang out with the neighborhood kids and classmates.
After being refused again, Mrs. Baker no longer insisted. As she stepped out of the store after saying goodbye, her eyes moved to the apron Lucy was wearing, which barely did anything to hide the baby bump.
"I’m still worried, so I should call my son to come to the store later," Mrs. Baker mumbled as she got inside her car.
Back inside the store, Lucy used a wet mop to wipe the grease and dirt that was left over on the floor. Her body swayed, and she distracted herself from the exhaustion by humming a tune.
After she was done, she moved upstairs to bring down some tools when she felt pain traveling across her lower abdomen, halting her from moving and using the wall to support herself.
"Whew! Baby, mommy’s trying to work. Don’t be impatient, I’ll be done soon!" Lucy rubbed her baby bump and smiled.
It had been five months since she moved to Auromont, a small town in the city of Virela. The first night she moved, she still couldn’t believe she was pregnant on top of having cancer. Thus, she immediately bought five pregnancy kits from different brands. It was never too late to be sure, anyway.
Yet, even after using all five kits, the result was the same.
Two lines were shown on the pregnancy kit, showing her another reality she needed to accept quickly.
Thankfully, it was not that hard to accept she was pregnant. She just had to accept that a new life was growing inside her. And the most beautiful thing is... the baby is a mini version of herself and Landon.
The locals in this town were very generous and kind. They were wary of her in the beginning since she was a foreigner, but they gradually opened up to Lucy when she started helping out children in their lessons.
Thanks to that, Lucy could find a job in this town and not worry about not being able to pay her bills and food.
Finding a chair to sit on, Lucy continued humming while rubbing her baby bump. Now and then, she would feel contractions, but Mrs. Baker said it was normal since her body was preparing herself for the upcoming labor she was about to put herself in.
"You know, baby, Mommy is happy you’re with me."
A soundless gasp came out of her mouth when her baby moved inside her.
Her eyes pooled with joy as she smiled. "Are you saying you’re happy you’re with mommy, too?"
Her baby moved again.
Lucy couldn’t help but tear up. "You’re so sweet, baby! As a reward, I’ll let you listen to your favorite music!"
She turned the TV on with a remote control and pressed the button to change the channel. Since her baby started moving inside her, Lucy discovered it would calm down when it listened to a song. The song didn’t have lyrics or a singer, just a composition of instruments.
Sadly, she couldn’t afford to buy a TV, so she had to use the one in Mrs. Baker’s restaurant. Lucy couldn’t use it when she’s working, but she definitely has to after work hours!
That’s why she stayed behind tonight. Same with the other nights.
Fortunately, there were many channels for her to choose whenever she needed to entertain herself. But for now, her baby comes first.
Lucy kept changing the channel quickly when suddenly, a news report made her stop.
It was regular news that had a slot in the evening, and usually, Lucy enjoyed it.
But this particular news made her heart cry out in shock.
The TV screen was no more than 21 inches, but it showed what needed to be shown. On the screen, a newscaster read the script in front of her, and his eyes met the camera.
"And for tonight’s last showbiz-related news, we’ve got two huge names caught on camera. Last night, a picture of Yvonne Leblanc and Landon Westwood was photographed in an expensive restaurant. They were seen together having dinner, and they looked very romantic."
"This sparked the rumor that has been going around whether the Westwood family and the Leblanc family are finally tying the knot!"
Lucy gripped the remote control, and suddenly an urge to hurl it at the TV overcame her. Her body shook as her breath came as short and quick. Each inhale and exhale became torturous for her.
She thought Landon would at least feel something when she was gone. The time they spent together for two years was filled with sweetness, and she had the thought that he would regret, or at the very least, hesitate to marry Yvonne.
But she was wrong.
Landon had moved on. She hadn’t.
Not completely, at least.
"No, it’s all right. I already expected this much."
She married Landon because she needed him. And it was the same for him.
They were married because of their own goals, not because they loved each other.
A tear dripped down her cheek, and she hurriedly wiped it away.
Strangely, though, no matter how she wiped them away, her face became wet with tears all over again.
"My mood swings are kicking up again. I should definitely do something about this," she tried reasoning.
"Right, I should turn the TV off." She glanced down at her tummy and bitterly offered her baby a smile. "Sorry, darling, I don’t think we can listen to your music. Mommy... mommy’s not feeling too well."
As if on cue, Lucy’s vision swayed, and her body leaned towards the floor.
But as she was about to fall, someone grabbed her and kept her upright.
Turning to see who had just saved her, Lucy was surprised when she saw it was Mrs. Baker’s son.
"You really shouldn’t be working late," said Luciano.
Lucy felt ashamed and apologized. "Sorry, I was just about to go home—"
She stopped mid-sentence when she felt something wet gushing down from between her legs.
"No... it cannot be."
Lucy looked downwards in mortification. It wasn’t her due yet, so why did her water break?
Noticing her oddness, Luciano looked down and saw a puddle was already forming around their feet!
"You...!" Luciano’s mind short-circuited for a moment before he reacted immediately. "I’m going to take you to the clinic!"
Before she could say anything, the high school boy carried her like she was nothing.
However, Lucy couldn’t do anything but watch as she was taken from the store to outside, as she couldn’t fathom what was going on right now.
She felt like she was floating. Everything didn’t seem real anymore.
"Don’t panic! I’ll take you to the doctor now!"
Lucy blinked her eyes, and just right then, a pain she had never felt before suddenly shot through her entire body like she was being sawed open in the stomach.
A short noise, like a scream, tore from her lips before being cut off as darkness swallowed her consciousness up.
