Chapter 18: What Next?
Chapter 18: What Next?
Would you grieve if I died?
For a moment, Landon could hear her voice whisper in his ears like a ghost hovering above him.
The words he had tried not to agonize about came back at him, punching him in the gut until he couldn’t breathe.
Like a wet dog shaking away water from its body, Landon also tried to shake the truth out of him.
But his grip on the paper tightened as he continued to read Lucy’s medical result.
Lucy was diagnosed with stage-two ovarian cancer.
Landon felt the strength in his legs leaving him. He could hear his secretary saying something and also sensed him supporting him, but his soul seemed to have left his body.
"Sir!"
"Mr. Westwood!"
Alaric called out a few times, but Landon didn’t react to his voice.
"I’m fine." Landon heard himself answering.
But the truth is, he was far from fine.
No. He was closer to tearing the paper into pieces and running himself over with a car several times.
He couldn’t believe Lucy could have cancer. How could a young and healthy woman have a terrible disease?
Landon couldn’t remember how he had gotten inside his car. But the moment his consciousness woke, he was already standing before the doctor’s office.
He remembered running to his car and driving it fast in the middle of the street. But he couldn’t recall how he had stopped at the hospital and found the doctor’s name on Lucy’s medical result.
"Doctor Halen is ready to see you in his office," the nurse kindly reminded him when Landon didn’t move.
Taking his first step inside the doctor’s office, Landon felt as if he were trudging in the middle of a quicksand. The distance between him and the doctor was short, and yet it took him a long time to finally reach the chair arranged for patients to sit on.
The doctor had the eyes of a person who had seen a lot of things. Good and worse.
And when he looked at him, Landon felt the reality sinking inside him.
"What seems to be the problem?" the doctor routinely asked him.
Landon produced the paper the young man gave him earlier and placed it on top of the table that separated him from the doctor.
The doctor picked it up and read it. Slow and deliberate.
When he was finally done, he set it aside and clasped his hand in front of his chest.
"You’re not here for a check-up. But may I ask what your relationship is with Miss Grey?" the doctor finally asked.
Miss Grey? Is that how she wanted to be known now? Although he was upset that Lucy decided not to use the Westwood name anymore, Landon was far too distracted to care.
He answered, "I’m her husband."
The doctor nodded as if he understood. But still, he said, "Do you have proof of your relationship with the patient? I cannot release a patient’s information unless you have it."
Landon paused. He didn’t have his marriage certificate with him. However, he had pictures of him and Lucy.
Thankfully, he had set his phone screen with a picture of them together. He showed that to the doctor and said, "I’ve been married to her for two years, doc. I just want to know if this diagnosis is real."
The doctor briefly glanced at it before he shook his head. "A picture of you two isn’t enough."
"But..." Landon tried to explain, but stopped.
"Come back here tomorrow." The doctor moved his eyes to the clock on the wall. "It’s also rather late to discuss anything. It would be better if you could bring your wife with you when you come, as I have important details to discuss with her."
Landon would have persisted and demanded answers from the doctor. But he didn’t want to risk it. The doctor was the only one who knew about his wife’s disease very clearly.
Stepping out of the doctor’s office, Landon stopped and turned his head to look at the doctor.
"Doctor, my wife... she’ll get better, right?"
The doctor raised his head and looked at him. "I’m sorry, but that will depend on your wife’s decision."
...
"Miss, wake up."
Lucy tiredly opened her eyes and scratched the back of her head. She raised her gaze and saw the driver looking at her.
For a moment, she didn’t know why she woke up inside the taxi. Shouldn’t she be lying in bed with Landon beside her?
Ah, Landon...
At the mention of his name, her mind finally woke up.
That’s right. How could she forget that she had already divorced and left him? She even flew out of the country just so he couldn’t find her.
Right now, she shouldn’t think of him anymore.
Instead, she should probably resolve one major problem.
"Miss, are you getting off here or not?" the taxi driver impatiently asked.
"No, you can drop me off here."
After paying the driver, Lucy dragged her luggage in front of the hotel. It was not a grand or a five-star hotel either. It was just a seven-story building with an old and classic exterior design. But she had no complaints.
It was already fortunate to find a decent hotel in a small town she had never been to.
Walking straight inside, the interior in the lobby was even more vintage. Further inside, at the center, was the counter. Lucy headed towards it.
The lady behind the counter looked at her meaningfully and asked, "New here?"
Lucy nodded.
After requesting a room and paying for it, Lucy dragged her luggage again.
But before she could get inside the elevator, the lady suddenly called out to her.
"Elevator’s not working. Take the stairs."
Lucy stared at the stairs beside the elevator and could already feel her bones protesting. Her room was coincidentally located on the seventh floor.
With her luggage, it would take her a long time to reach her room. Should I change it?
"No changing of rooms." The lady seemed to read her mind and smiled.
Lucy stifled a groan. She was about to take her first step on the stairs when she suddenly remembered something.
Turning back, she asked, "Do you have a pharmacy near here? I need to buy something."
She needed to check for herself whether she was truly pregnant.
By then, she could decide what to do next.
