THE BILLIONAIRE'S CRYBABY
Chapter 34: AWAKE

Chapter 34: AWAKE

Marilyn jerked to her feet, and subtly stood in front of the bed, just as Reign stopped before her.

"Move," Reign said, no trace of humor evident in her face.

"I— I can’t," Marilyn stuttered.

"Why?" She folded her hands across her body, and jut a hip forward. "Isn’t it a simple courtesy to visit the unwell?" She drawled in that lazy voice of hers.

"You can’t be here ma’am." Marilyn stood her ground. Her head shot past Reign, glancing from one part of the room to another, in hopes Ace would walk in and save them all from the cattiness of his ex-girlfriend.

"Who are you to tell me where I can, or can’t be, Marilyn? You must have forgotten so soon what I am to your boss." She gave her a disgusted once over, appalled by the audacity of being spoken back to, by someone she considered a lowlife.

’His trashy ex?’ Marilyn sneered in her mind, but was too much of a coward to say it out loud.

"I’m sorry ma’am, but you simply can’t go close to her. It’s the doctor’s orders."

"But you are close to her. Move, Marilyn," she stressed each syllable of her words, to show she wasn’t playing games anymore.

"I can’t ma’am." She shook her head vigorously.

"We’ll see about that." She took a purposeful step forward, but suddenly, the monitor began to beep.

Their gazes shot forward in sync.

"Mrs Fay!" Marilyn screamed at the same time the door pushed open, and Alexander in company of Ace ran into the room.

"I need everyone out now," he was saying when the beeping monitor stopped, and Fay’s eyes began to flutter.

"Oh my God, she’s waking up!" Marilyn cried out.

She turned her head towards Ace, hoping to share her excitement with him, but the rage in his eyes made her heart drop.

He was staring at Reign, who was staring right back at him with an evil grin on her face.

"Mrs Fay?" They all heard the doctor call, and their attention was momentarily dragged to the bed.

The first thing Ace noticed was the doctor sitting on the bed beside her. In his head, he knew it was just protocol, but his mind had a different thought.

"Mrs Fay, can you hear me?" He asked again. Her eyes were open, but other than that, there was no motion.

"Look at my fingers? Can you see it? Blink if you can hear me."

She still didn’t respond, causing worried lines to form on Alexander’s head.

"I think the boss should try. He’s her husband right? She’ll definitely be responsive to him," Marilyn suggested.

Reign scoffed. "A husband indeed," she muttered under her breath.

For the first time since he ran into the room, Alexander took notice of the tall blonde beauty. She looked nothing like Fay, Ace, or even the woman that was always beside Fay.

Going by the tone of her voice, it didn’t look like she was a big fan either. In retrospect, he wondered if she was the reason for Fay’s knee jerk reaction.

"Doctor?" Marilyn for the very first time, spoke directly to him.

"Sorry," he blinked, and rose to his feet. "Of course he can try. If she still doesn’t respond, we’ll have to try more clinical methods. Please." He beckoned on Ace, and gestured with his hand towards the spot he had occupied merely seconds ago.

Ace, still full of anger, walked forward. He sat down, and looked into the open eyes of his wife.

"Hey," he began, grabbing her hands. Behind him, Reign hissed, but he ignored her. Right now, she was the most inconsequential thing in the room. When the dust settled, her behavior would be admonished. "It’s me, Ace. You need to speak. Every— I," he immediately corrected. "I want you here with me. By my side. Screw what anyone says, but you’re my wife. My wife," he repeated, and her head suddenly turned. "Fay?"

"Hey," she said in a voice saddled with pain, despair, and hoarseness.

"You’re really awake?" He continued in disbelief, as his heart swelled.

"What—" she coughed, unable to continue with whatever she was about to say.

Ace turned to Alexander for an explanation.

"I need everyone to leave now. I’ll run further checks, and be out in no time to explain my findings."

As he spoke, Fay’s ears twitched. Her thoughts, and memory were all jumbled, but the voice speaking sounded so familiar. So close, yet so far. She wanted to twist her head to see him, but her body felt like she had been attacked by a pack of wolves.

"Hey, you heard what the doctor said? I’d be right outside." He kissed her hand, and carefully dropped it on the bed.

Rising to his feet, he gave an acknowledging nudge to the doctors, before stepping out of the room.

"Please take care of her," Marilyn said with tears of joy in her eyes.

He nodded, and she walked out of the room.

Reign grinned from ear to ear, happy to see Ace stupid enough to leave her with his bitch of a wife. But as she stepped forward, ignoring the raised brow of the handsome doctor, the door suddenly opened.

Ace walked in, and strode directly towards her. Furiously grabbing her hands, he dragged her away. "You, you’re coming with me," he said between his teeth.

"You’re hurting me Ace!" She screamed as the door banged shut.

Alexander flinched a little at the crazy display he just witnessed. Every other day, something crazy happened in the hospital. This was the very first time he was involved in one, in the sense that he kinda knew one of the parties involved in the drama.

He shook his head, and slowly turned around to face Fay, who looked like she had a lot to say, but was too constricted to move her mouth.

Her eyes widened when she really saw him this time. "Yo—you?" Her voice broke.

He was swiftly by her side. "Don’t speak. You’ll tire yourself out," he said, smiling sweetly at her.

"I just need you to nod or shake your head for confirmation. Can you do that?"

She nodded, and he sighed with relief. "Do you feel funny inside of you?"

She nodded.

"Are there any emotions you’re feeling right now, and if so, are these emotions overwhelming?"

She nodded again.

"Are you hungry? Or does the thought of food make you want to wretch?"

She shook her head, and then nodded.

The gesture made him smile. "So you’re not hungry then, and the thought of food does make you want to wretch?"

She nodded.

"Got it. Last question, does it hurt anywhere? If yes, where does it hurt the most?"

Her eyes locked with him, as she slowly brought her hand to her chest. In a blink, a single tear fell from her eyes.

"Hey, don’t do that," he said gently, feeling his heart break.

Placing his hand on her forehead, he began to stroke. "I don’t know why you’re in this situation Fay, but you’re safe now, I promise you. Nothing’s going to hurt you anymore," he paused for a second, contemplating if he should say what he was about to say or not. It would do him the greatest disservice to, but unfortunately, he was too known for his kindness not to proceed. "Your husband cares about you a lot. He’s ready to do anything to see you get better."

Just like that, she smiled. It hurt his heart to see. To know that she adored her husband. Valued his opinion, and intentions towards her. But it got her to smile, and that was truly all he needed to see.

"I’ll send in someone to check your vitals, and monitor you some more. In the next thirty minutes, we should know what to do, or what not to do. Is that okay with you?"

She nodded, and he withdrew his hand from her head. As he rose to his feet ready to leave, he felt her hand on his.

His breath caught against his chest, as he turned around. "Thank you," she said.

He suddenly couldn’t move anymore. He just stood there, staring at her. Every sane part of his body was telling him to leave. In his head he knew he was wrong for desiring another man’s wife. Ethically, he wasn’t supposed to be this cozy with his patient. But her hand on him was a gift he hadn’t thought he needed until now, and he didn’t want her to ever let go.

They were in that position when the door opened, and a woman walked in. "Hey, Alexander, I just finished from surgery and the chief asked me to—" her voice trailed when her gaze fell on the scene in front of her.

Her eyes moved from him, to the girl laying on the bed. The moment she saw the girl’s face, she gasped.

Fay turned as the sound reached her ears. Her lashes lowered, and instant recognition sparkled in her face.
