Chapter 33: CAMERA SHUTTER, CLICKING HEEL

The wind returned his words back to his ears, and he sighed. With resignation, and acceptance at the fact he couldn’t just continue with life until he was certain Fay was okay, he went into his car, and drove off.

He spent the next two hours driving around. By the time he returned to the parking lot of the hospital, his hand felt sore.

"Here we go again," he muttered, as he stepped out of the car.

He had taken just two steps forward when he felt a flash. Instinctively, he covered his face, and hastened his steps.

"It’s just 2am for heaven’s sake!" His mind screamed, as he hurried into the lobby.

His head grew hot, and clouded with thoughts. The press had found out. Someone leaked his private information to them. If only he listened to Cam and insisted on an NDA.

"Good evening si—" the workers in the lobby which consisted of mostly women’s words trailed, when he whooshed past them.

As he approached the emergency hallway, Cam appeared from the other side. They almost bumped into each other, but Ace stopped just in time.

"You heard?" He quickly asked.

"Did you see?" Cam counter asked.

"Flashlights, and a camera shutter. How did they manage to get in? What the fuck is happening?" He palmed his forehead in frustration.

"Calm down boss. I’ll go handle it."

"No you’re not. We can’t do anything right now that wouldn’t get misinterpreted. God, I hate those silly bastards!" He cursed.

"What do we do now?" He asked in a voice thick with worry.

He understood his bosses reluctance in handling the media. The poor man had been in constant battle with their lies, all his life. They’d feast if they could spin whatever they’ve gotten, in a way that’s sure to completely massacre his character.

"Nothing Cam. We do nothing for now," he said calmly, but there was a riot of emotions in his eyes.

There was also the heavy scent of female perfume oozing from his body. Cam could recognize that scent any day. After all, there were countless times he had driven Reign King to his boss, and vice versa.

In that tiny moment, he felt bad for Fay. Tied to a man whose greatest desire was to always be free. How would she survive?

"Do you want me to drive you home so you can get some rest? It’s way past midnight already." He suggested.

"How’s Fay?" He tossed aside his suggestion.

"She’s yet to wake up, but I saw the doctor going into the room before I got the Intel."

His fine brow lifted. "You’re sure?" He asked, his voice a little testy.

"Yes boss."

Ace nodded, and strode purposefully out of his sight. If neither of them could see her, he wanted to know why it was okay for the doctor to constantly go in and out of her room. Something wasn’t adding up, and he was going to find out about it.

"Sir Ace," Marilyn stood up when she saw her boss, but paused on her tracks the moment she saw the expression on his face.

Recoiling in fear, she watched him walk towards the room.

"You can’t go in, sir," a man rushed forward to stop him.

He swiftly turned around, and paused in front of the doctor. Towering above him, he stared him down. "We’ve been patient to wait for this long, but not any second longer. I want to see my wife," he declared.

"And you will, when the doctor permits it," the man said, putting on a brave face, but deep down, he faltered. Everyone had heard about Ace Atticus. Ruthless, and monstrous when he wanted to be. As much as he wanted to follow the code of the hospital, he didn’t want to get on this man’s bad side, either.

"I’d like to see you stop me." He shoved past him, and went to the door. As he reached out to grab the handle, the door opened, and together with the chief, Alexander stepped out.

"What’s going on here?" The chief asked.

"Sir, I swear to you, I tried to stop him but he wouldn’t listen. He insisted on seeing his wife," the man fearfully explained.

The chief sighed, and turned to Ace. "I understand your anxiety, and that’s why I’m happy to tell you we’ve agreed to transfer her out of the emergency ward. She’s stable enough now, and only needs to be kept an eye on, pending when she’ll wake up. You’ll be able to see her once she has been transferred," he thoroughly, and kindly explained.

"Nice," he nodded, but not a single smile of excitement broke out of his face, and they all wondered why. Their curiosity was quickly satiated by his follow-up words. "Would you care to explain how a media personnel got into the hospital?"

The chief looked to Alexander for help. He had given Ace his word, that nothing like this would happen. Right now, it wasn’t looking like he had kept that promise to the best of his ability.

"Sir, do you think we could go discuss this in my office? It’ll give the staff the opportunity to transfer your wife to a different ward," Alexander offered with a smile on his face.

Ace, still keeping a straight face, nodded. "Marilyn?" He called as he turned around.

"Sir," she responded, quickly stepping forward. Her shoulders slouched as her eyes went to the ground.

Alexander watched her body language, a little bit tickled, and even more amused. He wondered if all of that theatrics was her way of avoiding his gaze. If only she knew he was just as shocked as she was, when he found out who his patient was.

"When Fay is out, ensure you follow her to the new ward. I trust you’ll keep an eye on her."

It was more a statement than a question, but she responded anyway. "I definitely will."

He gave her an acknowledging nudge, before stepping aside for the doctors to go through. As they walked ahead, he followed from behind.

Marilyn watching them leave, clutched her invincible pearls. As worried as she was about the state of her mistress’ health, she also reserved some worry over those two. When Sir Ace eventually found out about everything, she prayed he didn’t go ballistic.

She watched, until they disappeared out of sight. As she turned around, the door of the ward opened, and Fay was rolled out in a stretcher.

"Mrs Fay!" She hurried to her side, to take a peek.

However, the stretcher was hurriedly carried away. When she tried to run behind them, a voice stopped her from taking another step.

"Miss?"

She turned around, and found one of the doctors watching her with a curious expression.

"Marilyn." She bobbed her head enthusiastically.

"Any relation to the patient?" He further asked.

"I work for her. Her husband is currently talking to the doctors. He personally asked me to go with her to the new ward."

"Do you have a witness to back up your claim?"

She froze, not sure how to answer that question. But the guy from earlier suddenly stepped forward, and bailed her out.

"I can confirm the husband said so. I was here," he said.

"Thanks, doctor Nathan," the doctor said to him. "Ma’am, please follow me."

He led her to the new ward, and stopped to allow the staff to come out.

"Is everything in place? Can her acquaintance go in to see her now?" He asked one of the student doctors involved in the process of the transfer.

"Everything is set, sir. I really believe she’ll be waking up in no time," he said, with a big smile on his face.

"Can I see her now? Can I see Mrs Fay?" Marilyn desperately asked.

"Sure you can. Just be careful, alright" The doctor waved at her, and stepped out of the way so she could go through.

Her shaky hands grabbed the doorknob, and pushed the door open. She stepped into the room, and slowly tiptoed beside Fay resting on the bed.

"Hey baby," she said, sitting on the chair beside her. "How are you doing? You’ve got everyone so worried about you? Why’d you do something like that?" Her voice broke, as tears welled up her eyes.

She didn’t know why she felt so strongly about Fay. None of the bosses previous women had ever invoked this much emotion in her. But Fay was different. In such a really short time, she truly loved the girl as if she were her own child.

"You know, even the boss is worried. He masks it well by projecting aloofness, but it’s true," she paused, and smiled through the single tear that dropped down her face. "Anyway, I trust you’ll be up soon. I don’t know why, but I think you’re a fighter. This is nothing you can’t overcome, right!"

Stretching her hand to her cheeks, she stroked it gently. "Our beautiful Fay," she said in a whispering voice.

Suddenly, she felt a movement, causing her hand to jerk away.

"Fay? Mrs Fay?" She called out.

Simultaneously, the door to the ward pushed open. She turned her head back, and gasped at the sight she found.

"So this is what Ace was hiding," Reign King said, her heels clicking on the floor, as she took step after steps forward.
