Chapter 265: TURNS AND TWISTS

"No!" Ace screamed.

He threw caution to the wind, and leaped towards the car.

"Since you want to be with your beloved that much, maybe we should help speed things up."

The two men blocked his path, and before he could use the gun, tossed it out of his hand.

"Let me go!" He pleaded. "I have to get her. Whoever paid you, I’ll pay double. I’ll give you everything I have, I just need to save her please!"

The men laughed in his face. "Save her?" One said.

"You’re going to be joining her soon," the other snickered.

They turned him around, and were about to throw him into the fire, when two successive shots fired from both ends of the road.

The men’s hold on him broke, as they fell to their knees.

Ace didn’t wait to investigate what had happened.

He jumped forward, and was about to push his hand through the fire to try and open the door, when someone pulled him from behind.

"I said let—-" he turned to see Cam looking at him.

"Step away Sir," Cam said coolly, as Cade arrived from the other side.

In a split second, vans with blaring sirens pulled into the scene.

Ace struggled against the hold of Cam , and Cade, as they fought to keep him away from the car.

The firefighters jumped out of the van, and hurried to the car.

"I need to go to her!" Ace screamed. "She needs me! She fucking needs me!"

Two hours later, the City Hope hospital was flooded with the press.

It was way past midnight, but their cameras flashing on every car that pulled up, made it look like daytime.

The city was in full pandemonium , as headlines after headlines rolled in.

"A miracle resurrection? Ace atticus presumed dead before, spotted around a fire incident Fay Luxe was involved in."

"Fay Luxe, dead? Reports coming in now live."

In the private floor Ace had paid for through the help of Landon, he paced back and forth, waiting for news from the theater.

As he turned the other way, he saw Landon rushing towards him.

"What the hell happened, Ace!" He asked, panicking.

Ace, who was just as clueless, and confused, stared blankly at him.

It was like his brain was purposely suppressing the memories.

One second he was driving in the car with Fay, and the next, she was being strolled into the theater.

"You’ll be fine, man," Landon said, placing his hand on Ace’s shoulders. "Fay will survive too. I promise."

"You promise?" Ace found his voice.

"I promise," Landon nodded.

Cam returned with news for Landon. But when he saw the state of Ace, he knew he couldn’t say it in his presence.

Landon sensing the hesitation, excused himself, carrying Cam along with him.

"What the hell is happening? You just called to tell me to send some money to the hospital. I met Cade at the entrance, and he wouldn’t even explain in detail what happened!"

"Calm down, Sir Landon. I’ll tell you everything, but first, you don’t have to worry too much about Ms Fay."

"Why’s that? Cade said she was inside of the burning vehicle. I think there’s plenty to be worried about."

"No," Cam shook his head. "The car they took is the one with its body parts resistant to fire. If anything, it’s her lungs we should worry about. There wasn’t any burn on her body when she was taken out."

"Are you sure about that?" Landon asked, feeling himself getting relieved.

"A hundred percent," Cam nodded confidently.

"Okay!" Landon bobbed his head, breathing hard. "Okay, Fay is fine. Fay will be fine. But she’s still in the theater, Cam. Why is she still there?"

"I don’t know about that. I guess we have to wait for the doctors. But that’s not all," he said.

"What else?" Landon lifted a brow.

"It’s the media. The news of sir Ace’s possible resurgence is spreading like wildfire. Should we let it keep its momentum? Because I’m certain any moment now, we’ll get calls from the Atticus mansion."

Landon hissed. "No one cares about that, Cam. We just need to make sure Fay is fine first. Every other thing can wait," he said, turning around to return to Ace’s side.

"Uhmm, I don’t think so, Sir Landon."

"What is it again, Cam?!" He asked in frustration, as he turned to face him again.

"It’s the guys that set the fire. One died, but two survived. The police say they’ll get back to us with news of the investigation at most, this afternoon," he said.

Landon lifted his wrist to check the time. It was about four am in the morning already.

"That’s okay. I’ll keep in touch with them. Thank you so much, Cam."

He turned, and returned to the spot where Ace had continued pacing.

"What is it I’m not supposed to know?" Ace asked much to his surprise.

"I thought—"

"Landon, don’t lie to me," Ace warned.

Landon sighed. "Fine, I think we should sit down for this."

A few hours later, Leighton called from the villa.

"Dream wants to talk to you," Landon said, passing his phone to Ace.

Taking a deep breath, Ace accepted the phone with shaky hands.

"Dream, baby," he called.

"Hello daddy," he heard her chirpy voice say, and closed his eyes tightly.

"Hello baby. How are you doing?" He asked, after mustering the strength to speak.

"I’m fine. Can I talk to mummy?" She asked.

He sniffled, as his chest twisted painfully.

"Mummy isn’t here right now. But–" his voice choked, and he had to pause to pull himself together.

Landon threw his face to the side. It hurt him to see Ace that shattered.

He wished there was something he could do to erase all of the pains, but it was in times like these he realized, money couldn’t fix everything.

"It’s okay daddy. I know mummy will talk to me when she’s available. Don’t worry about me daddy, I’m fine. Aunty Leighton is watching my cartoons with me. She even made me cereal with lots of milk. Don’t tell mummy, okay?"

"I promise, I won’t," his eyes watered. "Be a good girl, okay?"

"Okay daddy. Bye!"

With great pain, Ace passed the phone back to Landon.

He buried his head on his lap, as his thoughts grew louder than what he could beat.

A few minutes after the call, the door to the theater finally opened.

Ace’s head shot up, when he began to hear footsteps approach him.

Landon was right beside him in anticipation.

"Mr Ace?" A doctor called in awe.

"Yes." He nodded.

"Come with me please," the doctor said.

"I’m going with you," Landon declared, following behind Ace.

They walked into the doctor’s office together.

"Please sit." the doctor pointed, as he took his seat too.

"When can I see Fay?" Ace asked the second he sat.

"Mr Ace," he began ominously, and Ace nearly lost his mind. "I have both good, and bad news."

"Just tell me everything," Ace urged hastily.

"Please, we can’t stand the suspense," Landon added.

"Alright. There was surprisingly no burn on any part of her body. But her lungs took the biggest hit. Although we managed to deal with that, she’s still unconscious. It’s in her hands now," he said.

"What do you mean it’s in her hands? You’re the doctor. You should make her wake up!" Ace turned to Landon. "Call Alexander. He knows how to deal with cases like this, right? He should help!"

"Ace, I know you’re upset, but you have to calm down. Remember, Alexander works in this hospital too. Don’t put him in a difficult position, okay?"

Ace took a deep breath, and returned to his seat again.

"Just tell me, what is the possibility of her survival?" He asked in a sober voice.

"If she wants it badly, about sixty percent. But commas can be a little tricky. I suggest you keep praying for her. If you believe in God, now is the time to cry to him."

Ace nodded, and swallowed the bitterness in his throat.

"When can I see her?" He managed to ask in a levelled voice.

"You can go in after she has been transferred to a room," he answered.

"Alright. Thank you," Ace said, and rose to his feet.

He walked out of the room, suddenly needing air.

In the hallway, he grabbed the wall, and closed his eyes as raw pain sliced through him.

Landon ran after him. "What is it, Ace?" He called, holding him from behind.

"She can’t leave me, Lan. I know it’s selfish of me, but I can’t survive without her," he struggled to say through heavy breaths.

"She won’t leave you. She’s strong, okay? You have to be stronger. Be stronger, Ace. For her, and for Dream."

Ace pictured his daughter, and his clogged heart began to free up.

"For Dream," he echoed.

"Yes, Ace. For your daughter."

Slowly, he straightened up, feeling himself able to breathe freely.

"Thank you la—"

He was interrupted by the arrival of Cam, and two men in uniform.

"Mr Ace Atticus?" one of the officers called.

"Yes?"

"You’re under arrest for the attempted murder of Ms Fay Luxe," they said, pulling out a cuff.
